Thief Shot During Robbery Sues Store

This is why you don't shoot fleeing criminals.

Because the only repercussions you should face for holding a knife to someone's throat for $200 is potential jail time? Seriously, if this guy's case sees any time in front of a judge then it's a waste of tax payer money.

If the store employee was a better shot, he should have put one right in his head, case closed.

Good luck finding a jury that would give him a dime. What an idiot. He should count himself lucky that he's only in prison and not a coffin.

No, not what I was saying at all. Shooting them in the back as they run is a great way to get screwed by our wonderful legal system.

Ya since he was running away and the threat of death was over, he just might win this case. Of course, they probably won't award him much, especially what he's asking. Personally, I think it's totally stupid and should be thrown out of court, but like Cort said, shooting a fleeing robber is a good way to get fucked by the system.

He should be thankful he has his life, and is now living on the taxpayers dime.

I assume this, like many cases similar, is the case of a lawyer looking for work.

You're this guy in prison, and a lawyer comes up to you and offers you this option to have money when you get out of prison as long as you split it with him 50/50. You sign off on it and he'll do all the work. The lawyer thinks he's got a good chance, if he's right or not I'm not sure. All the guy has to do is sign off on it. He's got nothing to lose. He's obviously not going to have a lot of ethical problems with it because he's a douchebag.

When you see those "wtf" cases where a law suit pisses you off, like someone injuring them-self and then suing the business they did it in, that's all it is. The economy makes lawyers more desperate as well.

The overall problem is a lawyer out of work anyway has no reason not to do this. A possible solution is to increase the difficulty in passing the bar in states where these law suits are more common. Possibly also ethical reviews allowing them to be disbarred for being overly aggressive in seeking out "victims."

There should be a mandatory morality test required for lawyers. The whole "Hey I can make a quick buck capitalizing on the failures of the court system" mentality is really sad. But hey, how naive is it of me to think money doesn't corrupt?

They need to really rethink our legal system imo -_- getting tired of cases like this and many others that are a waste of time :\

you rob a store and then sue the store owner for shooting you, america, FUCK YEA!

When you consider that a robber once got locked in a garage and sued the house owners for not having something to eat other than dog food and coke when he was locked in there for 7 days, another sued a dog owner for being bitten by the dog after he shot a bb gun at it multiple times, and that those cases i pointed out WON it doesn't seem so far-fetched that the case stands a decent chance of winning.
Also the lawyers when selecting a jury tend to go for the stupid people. They're easier to confuse and turn to your side or at minimum inflict the chewbacca defense upon.

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised. Some examples:

  1. A robber goes in through the window of an old women's house. This one particular window happen to be in the kitchen, and on the kitchen desk was a knife. The robber falls through the window and hurts himself on the knife. The woman sues the robber, and the robber counter-sues the woman. Robber wins as, in their opinion, it was clumsy of the woman to leave the knife on the desk, resulting in the injury.
  2. A family is on vacation, and a robber breaks in. Said robber was planning to use the garage as a way of escape. After entering the garage, the door closes behind him, and he can not get neither the door nor the garage gate open. He gets locked in for a week, living off of whatever he can find in the garage. Robber sues the family and wins.
So yeah, I wouldn't doubt he have a chance at winning.

edit: Just saw Khajit had mentioned the second one xD

And the post before yours also showed it to be fake. I imagine the knife one is also just as fake.

I remember hearing the knife one in Liar Liar as a kid and even knew then it had to be fake. Nothing that stupid sounding can be real.

I don't know if anyone remembers me explaining some of the crazy shit robbers can get away with here.

If a robber attempts to break into your home through a window and in return hurts himself by lets say breaking his arm as he falls to the floor, he can sue the homeowners and will win.

If you put up your own form of home security, spikes under a window at night to stop break in's and the robber injures himself, he can sue you and will win.

If you attack a robber in the middle of a home invasion and he / his lawyer feel it was more than necessary force, he can sue you and will win.

Love it.. LOVE our systems.

Safety and rights to our people eh.

The knife one was actually told to me by a law student. It was the case he was attending as part of his education. Obviously I can't know it is true, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was.
