I just have a question, I'm going to be going back to school in september and will have little to no time to play ffxi nor do I really want it here as a distraction from my school work... I'm not 100% sure if I'm going to yet...My question is when I erase my character how long do I have before I can't bring my character back...I know I'm probably going to want to come back to FFXI later on

I hear it is three months and for some reason sometimes characters are completely lost. I just tried last night to do the "Return to Vana'diel" to reclaim my character Kurgon and he wasn't able to be recovered. Somehow my original character from PC launch was there and so was my 2nd character ever. /dunno

Best bet is to deactivate the content id but don't erase the character.

That's good advice but doesn't it get erased after you deactivate the Content ID?
 
No, the character is still attached to the deactivated content ID.
 
6 months seem to be the norm for most mmo ive played. wonder why that is??
 
Last time I quit, I just deactivated my content ID. When I came back almost a year later, my taru was still there with all his stuff, waiting to be reactivated and killed by {decent challenge} gobs, because "I'm fine, I don't need to rest yet."


Interesting side note:

When my brother quit he gave me all his gear to sell/wear/whatever. When we both came back I still had all his stuff... but so did he O.o Gil everywhere.

If you delete your character THEN cancel your content ID, its gone, unless you can convince SE to give it back.

If you cancel the content ID without cancelling the character, you will have 3 months to reactivate it before it gets deleted.

I think that's how it was when FFXI first came out, but I don't think it's like that anymore. I was gone almost a year and My char as still there. But I dunno, maybe I just got lucky.

I suppose the time was lengthened. It still says 3 months, but if people are keeping them longer....dunno.

I know for sure though that if you delete the character, its gone until the "Return to Vana'Diel" program.

Cancel the content ID only. Then you save your character, but won't have to pay until your ready to play again.
 
It's kind of a hit or miss. They guarantee that the character will be there for 3 months (supposedly) but it may last longer. Chances are they won't delete it if they don't need the space, as that is actually less coss-effective than keeping the character around.
 
Its what i have done with khidir, my handle is active but they can't charge me since khidir is in limbo, it shouldn't go away that way if you do that.

I haven't been warned about the 3 month thing and there isn't no char of course i cant play him either.

Sorry if this has been covered, i read the posts but didn't see anything like it or misunderstood
 
think it has do alot with space if they need the space they will start deleting toons, but seeing how not as many you have a 75% chance that it will be there when you come back
 
I don't know how long SE definately will keep a character for, but I know it's possible (maybe very unlikely) for it to nearly a full year. It happened to me. I gave up FFXI a year ago, the last month I paid for before quitting was February 2005. I decided to play again at the end of January of this year, and my old character was still there. I was definately shocked. :P I figured it would have been gone, since I thought it was only supposed to be there for three months before it was deleted. But it was there, complete with every item, job level and gil it had. (I still made a new character though. Starting off with about 50k from another character is really nice. :P)

Either way, I'm sure there's a set amount of time that they will definately keep a character (I guess 6 months?) but it's possible that it could stick around longer. Although if you have a character you've worked a lot on, and don't want to lose, I'd suggest "checking in" on it after a few months if you have the extra money to pay for one month, to extend the time you'll have guaranteed.
 
I've decided to stick it out...I won't have alot of time to play because I'm gonna be in clase Tue, Wed and Thur nights but I will still have the weekends... I will have to know how to focus and play the game only after all my homework is done... I'm only taking a course to get A+, Net+ and Windows Prof Certified so there shouldn't be a whole lot of homework involved but who knows.....And anyways it's only $12 a month which is nothing and worth just playing on the weekends... I probably won't have much time for partying but maybe just spend the time farming up a storm so when I do get back into full swing I will have loads of $$ to get the gear I want :-D
