Thoughts on BLU/WAR

Btw, like others have stated, /nin still generates enough dmg to pull hate, lol, at least at lvl 75.

There's a difference between pulling hate and justifying /NIN... But again, I said that mostly based off the gimp idiots that I usually meet at 75 BLU... and Bugaboo.

Defender is 5 min ability, 5 min recast, I thought? I may have the time wrong, but I know for a fact (or at least from when I leveled warrior) that it lasts the full duration of the cool down, so youre able to always have it on

defender is 3:00 and 3:00 recast. Not that it matters, though. could be 5:00/5:00 and still give the same result.

I was also trying to improve melee dmg, as well as ws dmg when not doing a sc. I'm pretty satisfied, at least for now, with my spells' dmg output, considering I am not done meriting BLU yet.

Fair enough, and extra important when your refresh options are limited. However, it really boils down to hate control really:

- /THF lets you dump big hate spikes onto other people so you (and others) can cheerfully go spam damage without pulling hate and being an MP sink.

- /NIN lets you pull hate yourself (by whatever means you see fit) without being an MP sink.

The dilemma with /WAR - and this is true not only for BLU - is that if your damage is good enough that you'd be able to pull hate anyway just with /NIN, your damage will *certainly* be good enough that you'll pull hate with /WAR. And /WAR does not offer options of dealing with that hate.

So it means you're pulling hate and being an MP sink. Either that, or deliberately holding back and doing less damage, which defeats the whole purpose of going /WAR for more damage output in the first place. :P

Throw in that /WAR doesn't offer as much to BLU as to other frontline damage dealers (because while it helps melee and WS, it doesn't help spells, and while spells aren't *all* of a BLU's damage output, they're certainly a very significant portion of it), and the net conclusion is that it's not a good idea in most situations.

That doesn't make it useless. Sometimes you want to beef up your def with Defender, sometimes you want to be able to tank with voke. And sometimes - this is particularly true at lower levels - you wouldn't have been able to pull hate with /NIN in the first place, so /WAR may bring you closer to (but still below) that hate line, and in that case you'd be better off with /WAR.

But if you're just interested in optimizing damage output for killing efficiency (which includes factoring for mage MP - don't want downtime, and don't want haste and dia 2/3 to be left by the wayside), /WAR is usually not the best bet once you're powerful enough that subbing WAR means pulling hate.

It's disappointing because it *is* a really nice boost to damage, it's just that in the bigger picture, it usually ends up being less efficient for the party overall. It's a commonly shared sadness among most damage dealers that they don't get to go "whee look at my big damage with /WAR", but most of them accept that their own damage output is not as important as the party going well overall. (You'll get the odd "it's my $$$ a month I'll do what I want" people, but that's when you just keep a list of who not to invite next time.)

This is just from personal experience:

I was in a COR PT at Lv57 and our PLD DC'd, and the BLU said he can go change his sub and tank as blu/war. I was skeptical at first, but after he did it the exp was rolling in.

He tanked much better than I could have hoped for, even better than some PLDs at that level I knew. That party lasted at least 5 hours and got 3 levels in that time, and it was really fun.

The BLU's name I believe was Jinzo, and you can ask him what he thinks of /war. But it makes for an excellent tank at that level if you know what you're doing.

That's why I like BLU, can take many different roles. Can tank at 75 too with DEF and VIT gear, which is practically the same gear you use for Cannonball. A 75 BLU/WAR can get 999 DEF with good gear, and quite a lot of -physical damage taken gear. Defending ring (Not all that common though), Jelly Ring, Genbu's Shield, put us at -35% physical damage taken. Stacked with 999 DEF, dunno how much VIT, and Exuviation, which gives quite a lot of hate, together with our other spells, BLU can be a good tank against things that don't require /NIN sub, such as HNM's. Point is, they can tank just fine in some events. They are not the best tank, but they can surely get the job done. Admittedly, most likely not close to how a real tank would do.

Can be compared with a RDM taking a WHM's role.

Untill you wanna use and cancell, like for cannonball as an example.

Thought the same thing when I read that. Defender can help quite a bit no matter what the job if utilized properly. Pulling too much hate, turning on defender until hate is taken back, then cancelling. The 3-minute recast timer makes it available fairly quickly after cancelling.

Well, yes, naturally.

However, I honestly don't think subbing WAR for Cannonball is very smart. Especially considering Sneak Attack increases Cannonball damage more then WAR do.

BLU tank would be a bit more welcome if they actually had shield skill, imo.

Sure, they can still block without it, but it's far more rare compared to even F skill.

Obviouslly SA adds more dmg, but /thf is hard to optimize at 75, due to cannon style parties, as well as soloing. Has anyone even tested Defender with Cannonball? I can't find anywhere that anyone actually has. And Cannonball isn't really the only reason for me subbing war, it's was just the reason for me originally considering it. Berserk for that Vorpal Blade during CA cooldown, as well as occasional increases from Double Attack (guess the average might be lower then Dual-Weild). Attack bonus and defense bonus although minor, still help somewhat towards these goals too (some BLUs set attack bonus, this would free up points, though would lack the stat boosts from these spells).

Savage Blade > Dissevernment > Distortion

I pretty much always use this sc, mainly for the fact that Dissevernment can produce good numbers w/o /thf.

Sorry, knew it was one of those weird sounding attacks... ><

Actually think I came up with at least 1 use for this sub.. Ballista, lol. Shadows seem to be near useless, since most players have ways to remove them, as well as using multi-hit ws's. Maybe a good defense build, set Cannonball as one of the spells (extremely long range, helps to take out people running away, lol, or makes it easier to close a SC). Putting it on the backburner for now.

You are correct there sir, war is definatly one of the best subs for lolblu in ballista. The defender makes you an extra bitch to take down (+ using the genbu's shield). And also makes those cannonballs stronger for laying down those who run away, probably the funniest thing you'll ever see.

Basically blu is overpowered in ballista, and no matter what you sub you'll rape. Give the controller/keyboard to someone that has never played blu, and they will own...makes it kinda boring.

Guess thats why I am always targeted, lol.

Bugaboo just did the impossible. He was eating sushi apparently and it lasted the full HOUR(food sanction) vs COLIBRI. I didnt know that was even possible......

Need to get hate to get hit with that move... let me stop >.>

lol
