Ok, I know I've complained before on how ninja cannot hold hate with a drk in a party. So I decided to give it a try. I leveled ninja to 10 (almost 11) and I am heading out ot the dunes tonight with a ls party to have some fun.

I have checked the ninja forum on alla, but did not find any coherent information. So, does anyone has any tips on playing nin? Let's assume I know nothing (which in a way is true)

Also, looking at some macros on other forum I saw /recast..... what exactly does that do?

Thanks!

use you ninjitsu PLEASE. it draws hate on the fundimental of being a spell at all and has the bonus of dealing real damage... you want acc/att almost as much as evasion because you NEED to hit them, you NEED to get that hate, a few cures can pull the hate away from a voke if you don't. voke soon, voke often... always party with a thief post-30.

All i've seen partying with ninjas, the best ninja tanks i ever had knew it was a REALLY expensive job and they committed themselves to that fact. they aren't afraid to buy ninja tools and use them.

This part of your advice is good at higher levels. Unfortunately at Lv10, Veresko only has Tonko.

From my personal experience (~36 static with no thf and nin tank), the truth of the matter is that a nin doesn't really "hold" hate, it's more like the rest of that party allows him to keep it.

Any DD really going to work on the mob (an aggresive blm, a drk drawing on Last Resort/Souleater, even a sam with Berserk) has a failry good chance to steal the hate if the nin doesn't have a thf SATAing on him.

We usually try to work around this by letting the nin close SCs (Retsu is a nice closer for Distortion), but in our current setup it really takes some work to keep the mob on the nin for most of the fight. I guess it's like a friend said, if nin could keep hate like a pld, then there would be no use for plds :)

After a nin gets their famous "elemental wheel" (i.e. hate through gil), some +enmity gear or somebody to SATA on them, i'm sure it must become a lot easier, but i'll let somebody who actually knows about that to tallk about it 8)

But I have been spamming it to increase my Ninjutsu skill! :) Also, I am aware of the cost of the job and it is not a concern, I=I can bring tools to party all day if needed.

What food should I bring? I was thinking Steamed Catfish (no idea on price) for added agi, vit and HP. Or even some red curry for Agil and attack boost to help keep hate.

navarin? or however that is spelled... isn't that the eva + 10 stuff? i could be wrong, not exactly a ninja here >,<

Before Lv37 and Utsu: Ni a backup voke is nice after your intial 6 shadows (utsu before pull, recast after you lose a few shadows on first voke). Its rather difficult to recast Utsu: Ichi while ur being attacked. Also I wouldn't recommend casting any Ninjutsu other than Utsu at the lower Lvs before you get the Ni versions (cept for debuffs). Alot of the time the dmg done by the Ichis are too weak and you're just throwing your gil away.

Good ninjutsu to use are: Hojo (slow), Jubaku (paralyze), and Kurayami (blind). Also if you can MB w/ the proper element on the SC thats pretty cool too.

Anyway thats my 2 cents : ) I'm not a NIN main so I could be talkin outta my ass.

and /recast tells you how long you have left until your spell can be cast again. i.e. /recast "Utsusemi: Ichi" <me> and it'll say like [Recast]0:13 or somethin.

Prior to level 40 the most effective hate gaining tool a ninja has is shuriken. You do not see many use them, b/c they are rather expensive, but if your throwing is capped you will hit often and for lots of damage, and they have super low delay. IF you choose not to use them, be sure to use blind, para, and slow jutsu. Poison kinda sucks, but you can use it too. The problem is until level 44 and 48 the cast on these spells is pretty long, so i believe shuriken are far better to use.

Equipment should focus on acc and evasion and some agi (it helps with parrying). Attack + isn't bad but i find that acc and evasion usually end up with better results, i personally prefer acc+ gloves over the kote b/c i feel it is best not to sacrifice evasion, but many ninja use them regardless.

Also, ninja af is pretty bad... the pants are nice at night, the shoes are nice in towns at night, and you can switch out the head piece for when you are debuffing... other then that though, they are pretty useless. Even the katana suck ; ;

At level fourty you gain the Elemental Ni spells, which are nice b/c of the short cast time and decent damage on bursts. Also, you can cycle through them (they weaken the mob to another element) to help hold hate. This is generally very effective. at level 49 using them and blind/slow/para i was able to hold hate pretty well against a rng who was using a gun at the time with silver bullets, and with no thief. Jutsu is really the main fall back for ninja.

/recast will send you a message that tells you how much longer you have until you can reuse a skill or ability. You can have up to 6 /recasts in 1 macro. They are VERY useful. for my ninja i have
/recast "Provoke"
/recast "Utsusemi: Ichi"
/recast "Utsusemi: Ni"

as a macro, and i spam it all the time (the recast msg comes up as an echo to yourself) By doing this you rarely miss vokes, and avoid spamming the party with different ability messages, all in all many jobs should use it more often, but it is espeacially useful for ninja.

Oh, and, at least at early levels, you should try to use retsu as much as you can. Its paralyze is rather strong, and proves to be very helpful in general.

Mobs to avoid include monks, weapons, bones and scorpions. the haste + boots are the best thing you can get for your ninja until the higher level version (72 i think ^^;;), and it is very important to have haste in your party in some form. Even bard's march will do well, and if you have a nice bard you can get both march and haste and have close to a 25 second recast on utsusemi ni which is awsome ^^;;;

Uhhh, i hope this helped. If you have any questions send me a pm or something :p

well... the experts up there have spoken... hope it helps ~_^

mambo and march are very nice for ninja yes ^^ though i rarely actually requested mambo after level 38 (10 more evade from gear helped a lot :p )

I eat jack o'lanterns most of the time... and haven't settled on a 30min food yet for when the pt is close to closing.

Wow, thanks guys, that is very usefull information! :) Thanks Nasya, I really appreciate all the detailled info. Tonight's party we are having is a ls static we just formed, all with level 10-11 and none are our main jobs, obviously. This should be fun as we will all learn at the same time how to play these new roles. Whm has a sam for main for crying out loud!

So this is mainly for fun, but it does not mean we cannot try and be effective. This info will definately help me being just that.

Thanks again!

Navarin doesn't give a EVA boost anymore. Jack-o-Lanterns as someone stated, are the best food in my opinion, but experiment.

SHRUIKEN! (sp) USE EM'! LOVE EM! You can do almost as much damage as a RNG with these puppies. They are real expensive though.

When you are enfeebing with Ninjitsu, use the spell first that weakens to the element of the enfeeb spell. For example: Weaken to earth before you use Hojo (slow). Hojo is earth based (I think, been a while since I've been NIN) so it will stick better and get resisted less.

You can burst Ninjitsu. Bursting elemental Ninjitsu is fun, but it does no damage with Ichi spells. You can also burst enfeeb spells (thanks to Phraust for this tip :) ). Say you have a scission chain, you can burst Slow and make the enfeeb way more devastating and last longer.

Was +5 Eva. But that's gone?
Grrrrr.

How about Dhalmel Pies?

HP +25
Strength +4
Vitality +1
Agility +2
Intelligence -2
Mind +1
Attack +25% (Cap: 45@180 Base Attack)
Ranged Attack +27%

Might help keep aggro and it's stackable. Or do I go for more def? I do carry a self bow as well by the way.

not if you are gonna use shuriken you dont :p

personally i think using throwing items as ninja is always best, many of them have nice stats (if boomerang or chacram (sp i know ><) ) and they will help you to keep one of your skills capped :p
