Tips for a n00b ninja!!!

not if you are gonna use shuriken you dont :p

personally i think using throwing items as ninja is always best, many of them have nice stats (if boomerang or chacram (sp i know ><) ) and they will help you to keep one of your skills capped :p

Indeed. Your throwing is A+ (?) as NIN. Bow isn't as useful.

That is true, but right now, I think the only thing I can throw are Darts and pebbles no? Shuriken are level 18 if I am not mistaken. And my throwing skill is capped already since I was using a boomerang with war (or thf, can't remember) early on. So until I can use either a gun or shuriken, I think I'll still use a bow.

Yeah at 18 esp shurikens tear through mobs, and also when i hit jungles i couldnt hit jack. I was temped to sub an archer knife at 28...

Ok well, I learned a lot last night. First, I had to share aggro with a mnk since I was not 12 yet. That went pretty well. Then at 12, the fun really started. Still need some tuning, but I think I got a hang of it overall.

Cast Utsusemi while puller is looking
Voke when mob gets here
Recast when 2 shadows are gone.

Well after that, that's where I need some improvment! lol Now I know why evasion and agi is so important, died 3 times cause I could not recast Utsusemi (mnk had left and we grabbed a ranger/nin). But in the last hour, I timed it better and we were able to tear throught mobs.

While I was frustrated at first because of all the dying, in the end I really enjoyed blink tanking. Looking forward to next week to perfect it.

Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for all the tips, Jack O lantern really helped (and got myself a pair of leaping boots as well before heading there, worth every penny).

You really need another NIN (preferably NIN) or tank 'til your 37 to voke off you when you recast. Truthfully, a NIN shouldn't be a tank by themselves until level 37 when they get Ni.

A solo NIN tank pre-37 is pretty much worthless 'cause when you do get hit (you will), it does so much damage that your mages end up spending the same amount or more MP then with a normal tank. Plus if you get hit casting Utsusemi, your screwed.

You might want to have a DEF equip. swap for when your shadows are down.

Another nin/war would be helpful or a war or a /war. Basically anything that can provoke off you and take a couple hits while you recast and then provoke it back upon yourself.

I disagree onions, it is very possible to tank as ninja with the right gear pre lvl 37 alone, though a back up voke is needed every now and then.

One more thing to note, something i forgot to mention. Once you get utsusemi ni keeping blinks up becomes a bit more complicated...

utsusemi ichi will overwrite itself... meaning that, if you have 1-3 blink(s) left from your old cast, when you cast it again you get three blinks.

Utsusemi ni will overwrite itself... meaning that if you have 1-4 blink(s) left from your old cast, when you cast it again you get four blinks.

Utsusemi ni will overwrite utsusemi ichi, meaning, if you have 1-3 blink(s) left from your ichi cast, ni will refresh it to four.

HOWEVER Utsusemi ichi WILL NOT overwrite utsusemi ni. if you only have one blink left from ni, and you cast ichi you must remove the remaining blink from the ni cast for the ichi cast to take effect. this is the secret to effective blink tanking. sorry for forgetting to mention it earlier.

I agree you can tank pre-37 without another tank but its not worth it in my opinion.

Ok, your pre-37, you cast Utsusemi: Ichi... 10 seconds later your 3 shadows (double-hit, whatever) are gone... you have 20 seconds till you can cast again. What do you do for those 20 seconds? Without another NIN or whatever to voke your gonna eat major damage for 20 seconds (even with a DEF swap-out). NIN's DEF just sucks to much. Of course thats a worse case scenario but it happens.

With 2 NINs (pre-37) or /NINs (post 24) you take hate back and forth and (if done right) no damage is taken. Freeing up the healer to enfeeb more and such.

Now I'm still pre-37 so I'm no expert  but this is just my opinion.

A sidenote thats kinda of related: I used to refuse to tank mandies (because they are MNK class, shadows are gone in like 5 seconds)... but then I realized that a WHM (exaggeration) could tank mandies because they do total shit damage.

Their is an exception to everything. Ecspecially in this game.

depends on your evade ^^;; a lot of the time, at least from about 29-37, i was able to keep all blinks up til 5-0 seconds left of recast. of course... we were fighting slow hitting mobs like beetles or crawlers, and post 32 i was lucky and had erase in the pt ^^; Typically i find my blink lasts about 5 seconds per blink anyway assuming the mob doesn't miss. Eh, i donno ^^; i just recall it not being a huge problem is all.

how I play NIN

I'd say find a good way of making money first off cause you're gonna need it hardcore after lvl 40. I go through probably 300k worth of tools per lvl. learn to play the job right from the beginning, don't be one of those lame losers that doesn't put in the effort to play ninja like it needs to be played. you can't just stand there and smack away at things with your wussy little katanas and expect to keep hate.

my philosophy with nin is that if you've got the money and can figure out timing on mobs attacks worth a damn (believe it or not some people can't) you do not need any ACC or ATk boosts at all. go for INT which ups ninjitsu dmg VIT, cause lets face it, you're gonna get smacked once or twice here and there, and eva and just spam away. plus USE DEFENDER it helps a LOT. I look at nins wearing ochiude's kote and think to myself "DUMBASS" dont' sacrifice your most improtant stat for your least important one. go for weapons that give stat bonuses rather than dmg, wind staff for instance would be a good one to think about. anyone that does this will have no trouble keeping hate against just about anything till lvl 60 when DRKs start getting SATA or store TP II lol. Emnity + gear is also helpful if you can afford it. I have +6 emnity usually unless a mob seems to land a few more hits that usual then I'll go for eva accesories. with that much emnity I susally keep hate to just about everything buy RNGs spamming sidewinders and blms chain casting ancient magic.

My philosophy is that if you're not going to put the money and effort into being a good ninja save us all the trouble and play a different job. I'm getting sick of being seen as a dumbass before people even see me play because of all the losers that think they can get by on a nin's pidly dmg and voke alone.

I would beg to differ, the way voke works is that it grabs a certain amount of hate. now if one person has hate equal to that of a voke and someone else vokes guess where the mob is gonna go? yup, that's right, straight at the mages. no, i'm not just pulling this out of my ass, test it, you'll see the horrible truth. anyone that is unable to tough it out to lvl 37 shouldn't be playing the job in the first place. I had no problem at all and I don't see why anyone else should either. just takes skill, timing and better equipment than the substandard crap i see lots of wanabe ninjas running around in these days. it wont kill you to take a day off from your lvl grinding to farm up the cash for some up to date armor, seriously. it's nins like that that give nins like me a bad name.
