too much "realism" in FFXI?

So I took up cooking last night, and I am not sure if I am made for crafting. I have played other games where one could do a tradeskill and most of the time it was a very tedious process, which I can understand because a good craftsmen needs bazillions of repetitions to become good.

Here is what I have some grief with: FFXI is too real!
I log on to play a game, spend my time in real life on entertainment, as such I expect that the entertainment I pay for is readily available to me. This concept of mine crashes head on with the way FFXI vendors work. Open from 12 to 20? A day off? Give me a break! When I choose to do crafting, then 12 to 20 doesn't suit me. What am I supposed to do inbetween? Just sit there and wait for the shop to open again?

Effectivly that is what I need to do, because it's just not feasible to run and do something else if I need to stay close to the guild for adv imagery support.

This is not even speaking of "You need to wait longer before you can perform this action.". I should be able to synth as fast as I can manage to hit my keys.

What do I need to make me happy?
24 hours 7 days a week guild vendors, or stackable synth results, and get rid of the synth delay.
If I want realism I will go in my RL kitchen and squeeze some RL OJ.

If you're talking about cooking, then the only thing you need the guild vendors for is to sell your stuff back to.

You should buy everything from regional vendors. You can save a fortune that way. Don't buy from the guild or the AH and you can hit lvl 30 with a moderate cash investment (30-40k). You also have to make the right things of course.

I agree though. When I first saw that the shops are closed one day a week, it kinda ticked me off a bit. ^^

I don't know about that...I mean I think everything in the game takes time and if you can make it to lvl 20 without going mad with all the waiting then you should be fine. This game is all about expending an incredible amount of time into doing everything: crafting, leveling, harvesting, missions, quests, just getting a party organized. So i don't think the shop being closed is too big of a deal...I mean it gives you time to run around, talk to some NPC's, get some quests and aquire some fame. There's usually always an option to do something while you wait in this game.
Heck while I'm waiting for boats/airships I level my enhancing magic!

It's still a FF title and all FF titles are really time consuming especially when your first starting but the pay off is always great! There are some ways around waits though...with crafting for example. In my linkshell we tended to all pick a different craft so that when everyones skills are up we can make equipment/pots/food for eachother. It saves a lot of time leveling every craft in the game and you still get the payload.

I'm sorta rambling at this point but I think this game is all about having patience and I like it that way. (traveling on chocobos can get annoying though @_@)

Good point made there, that FF is still out of the FF series, and to spin that further, it is basically a console title, and it seems to me like console titles always take extra time with stuff. Take FFTA for GBA, I need to listen (read) 10 minutes (or so) of dialog before I can do the next battle, what if I am simply not interested in dialog and would rather spend 10 minutes battling than trying to skip through it. (10 minutes is a figure of speech in this case)

Same with FFXI in a way. I agree that there is always something else to do, but my point is that it seems to me that a lot of times the user is not the primary concern of the developer. Of course I can go and do other stuff, but if I am set up for crafting I have all my other gear banked, to maximize the amount of things I can carry at one time without to have to run around for 15 minutes every 15 minutes just to get all the materials again. I guess what I am saying is that convinience is something that could be implemented without to break the FF feel.

Maybe my problem is that FFXI is really my first exposure to FF (other than FFTA), and my past experience with MMOs was ...., different, and I tend to compare and not be happy. Thus the solution is easy; Don't compare.

Yeah, I've had problems with the whole "shops being closed" thing too. It's quite annoying. But as for that FFTA example, I have to say that if you're playing a game just for the fighting and don't want to read, RPGs are not what you should be playing. RPGs are all about the plot, and the fighting is just something on the side. Now I agree that with games like FFT (I have to admit I've never played FFTA, only FFT), the game is mostly fighting, but that just means that if it had any less text/plot, it would just be pointless fighting. I don't know about you, but I like to have a reason to be fighting beyond "they're trying to kill us, so let's kill them first."

im kinda 50/50 on this... i love rpgs with great plots... but sometimes i just like to play them solely for the strategy involved in the battle system...

thats IF the rpg has a good battle system of course...

oh and i agree that vendors being closed=lame
....the first time i went to one and it was closed.... i was pretty pissed that i had to wait 30 mins to sell my single honey pot for 30g ^^

I just don't think a shop being closed for 30 min is nearly as bad as some of the waiting in other areas of the game. If you can wait for the boat to selbina, or an hour to organize a party and then another hour for everyone to get there - the waiting 30 min in a town where there's lots to do doesn't seem so bad.

true....

i mean it doesnt really make me angry...

just makes my taru do this face:

:\

but hey at least when you are in a shop waiting for it to open sea horrors never show up and turn you into a fine red mist... ^^

Haha! Man that was so scary the first time I jumped on the boat and one of them jumped on board...needless to say it slaughtered me, but it's all in good fun! If your going to die, might as well be pulverized instead of the slow widdling away of your hp >D

Sabia-

Ok, I just have to ask about the "Prarie Bears" LS name...

Is it a misspelling of "Prairie" or some cultural reference I've missed out on?

Nav
Quetzalcoatl

Haha...no it's just a spelling error. Oh well! what can you expect from a couple of Art college drop outs right? No point in changing it now, besides I think it adds a bit of flava. That or I'm just making up an excuse to make myself feel better about it =)

heh, that's too funny
afaik you can just /rename ls or whatever the command is to rename it if you like

Yeah but then I'd have to re-do all the work on the webpage and logo....and frankly I'd rather be playing FFXI then doing that!
