Is there a guide on "starting out"? The book sucks, strat sucks, I mean online.
an RL friend just started playing but... I can't POSSIBLY explain it all.... so like... anyone know where I can link them to?

On Allakhazam theres some guides there about general things, id let him look there first. I havent read them myself so...im not sure if their what your looking for..

Best thing to do is play with them face to face. If thats not possible go over to there house and do a walk through. Phones are good too, barring that check alla and party with them through level 10. Yea it'll be a little slower, but any questions to be had can be answered w/o some condesending prick saying something he thinks is smart.

I can feel a noob-guide contest coming on ...
Write a noob guide, each reasonably useful entry will win something, and the elected winner gets ..., I don't know yet, something else.

Winner should Get a Million gil~ O .o; I'd write one then.

I learned on my own using just the manual and asking people when I had trouble.

i would seriously enter this.
I've had so many RL friends start playing that i've basicly got the instructions memorized O-o

im sure if he looked he could find a brady guide somewhere. >.>

Best way is to walk around and ask questions. Immersion 4tw. Assuming of course he knows how to use a keyboard.

Brady Guide has too much wrong info.... and Sculli! do it!

and about face to face.. friend is in the army... in Tennessee.. I'm up here in NY >.>; But I know.. gonna try playing together when we can, but I cant babysit...

i just want them to learn and be a good player ^^

step one: get signet
step two: go kill things (Try to only make it EP)
step three: get a stack of crystals and sell 'em at the AH
step four: get some better armor and a weapon from around town
step five: ...get level 10.

theres how you level.

I think the most important part of a guide is picking the right job for you -

Not just mage vs melee either. If you want to DD or tank, or be a healer. I know many a person who regretted spending 10-15 levels to find out, "Oh wait I don't want to die for a bunch of people I don't know." ^^ Or, "Standing in the back is boring."

Make a good game plan based on the kind of character you want to play, and maybe even what kind of job you'd like to bring to endgame.

I also found picking a starting city to be a hard choice...my best suggestion is you explain what jobs each race is best at, what nations are like, and then use the 5 step guide above to get to level 10...from there you'll have to educate them about how to get a party and all because no guide can teach that....then just leave em on their oen to ask questions in the dunes cauase God knows we all get asked a million questions for having high ranks

Fortunately, gear selection in FFXI is as simple as browsing the AH and buying whatever's most expensive. That was my rule of thumb till AF levels anyway. Was I in doubt of what to buy? If so, it's a safe bet that the community demands I buy the overpriced item. It seemed to work. Lots of frivolous white borders, and everyone was happy. No need for a guide - just a motto: If you can afford it; it's not good enough. Other than that I use Allakazham for most of my fact finding.

though the brady guide is outdate and had some wrong data it does serve it purpose in the most part, ie how make macros, what benifits and draw back of each race and job, what are good subs, mode of travel, starter quest things that a noob player needs to know.(and it has pictures to for all then galka wantabes.) As for other guide just goggle it im sure you will find something.

I pretty much did that too and maybe looked a little bit in the guide, otherwise I tried to figure things out on my own, or asked whatever LS I first received when I started. I'm usually a fast learner so it was quite easy.

As for that ptying guide someone brought up, saying there is no guide for, give them this link: http://www.vanaguide.com/?action=guide_party

Moriki's Guide to Vana'Diel. 1~20

level 1-10: Use weapons, spells WHATEVER, if it moves, make sure it is not doing it for much longer! At these levels it is sometimes faster to regain xp, so fuck healing, take the hit, HP, run back out the gates and get back to the killing! GOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGO. (Exeptions: WHM, see below)

DO NOT BEGIN AS A WHM. EVER. Begin as a BLM, get to level 18, get subjobs, then go back to your lvl1 WHM, then you are set with WHM for a long time and have nice MP boost for the dunes and soloing to 11. DO NOT ATTEMPT THE DUNES PRE 11. CURE 1 IS <Too Weak> Wait for Cure II and you will have something to fall back on for emergancies that is not Benediction, (or the pretty little hate machine).

In the dunes, remember. NOTHING WITH A YELLOW NAME IS YOUR FRIEND.

EVERYTHING IS OUT TO KILL YOU.

In this day and age, the dubnes are a hazardous place. Why? Everyone is such n00bs they get killed so much that the mobs have leveled off the XP they gained, OFF YOU. Try to get a nice balanced PT, Healer, Nuke, DD DD Tank, Tank. (Ninja can NOT tank till 12. and even then some do not have uts.) So go with WAR or a Loladin, if you get a PT where alot of people have subjobs, make sure they are not overly gimped, a lil gimping is not too bad at this stage (depending on job, make sure PLD has /WAR to atleast 5 for voke, same as if you have a NIN) and keep your fingers crossed someone knows a PL. REMIND PEOPLE TO SET THEIR HP IN SELBINA. for the love of all things yellow... "NPNP, I HP NOW" "Why you now in Sandy?" "lol?" But after that it is alright, or it aught be.

10~13 - Lizards
13~16 - Crabs (itchy)
16~19/20 - Pugils.

Naturaly with some gobs thrown in for good measure, gobs are easier post 18 provided your WHM has Barfira.

At 19/20, Head to Qufim, or ask for help with the sub job quest.

Once subjob quest is done, go back to the begining of this guide, and REPEAT WITH THE SUBJOB this aught get that sub to 19/20, which means you are set until lvl38/40.
