Oy...I have Dilemma. My Dream car recently popped up on Kijiji and it's only 4k...I'm not going to go into what it is but it's 1974 with new engine/accelerator/brake/clutch pedals/tires. The engine is only 4 years old and it seems to be in mint condition.

Here's my dilemma, I bought in 2004 a new 2002 mazda protege 5...now this is a pretty sexy car in itself. Nice standard with tinted windows and a kick ass stereo....but my heart has always wanted that little 1974 car since I was little. Techically the engine in the dream car is newer than mine and I've actually had quite a few problems with my Protege5. I've gone through about $900 in new tires in the last year, it needs a new rim, had to replace the rotors/brakes, just got some rust taken off and it had this problem that it was firing exhaust into the engine and stalling it (thank god my warranty covered this).

If I sold the Protege 5 I'm guessing I could get between 10-13k for it and I only owe another 6k on the loan (I paid 17 for it). I'm just torn....suggestions? I really love this little 1974 baby :(

It's a good thing you're really a dude, because a chick who loves video games talking cars would just be too much to handle.

I'd say just go for it. Older cars are nice in the fact that you can do a lot of repairs on your own, and any repairs you can't do yourself are a lot easier and cheaper to have done for you. There's so much room and less BS material in the way.

Plus nothing beats a good old hunk of steel. Makes your gonads throb in joy.

Parts for the old car are generally cheaper too, if you can find them. You'll be saving yourself some money by going for it. I'd ask how old the transmission is in the 74 - a new clutch doesn't necessarily mean a perfect transmission, there's still pressure plates and other things I don't understand that could be on the way out.

Cmd you rock....I'd definitely get it inspected before I went ahead and bought it and I"d probably have to install a real heating system before the summer ends considering it's got a gas powered heater right now...but fuck me - if I was a dude I'd be pitching a tent right now.

Gas powered heater?! Jesus christ monkeyballs, sounds like a bomb in a can. I didn't know such knaveries existed.

Heater cores are relatively easy to swap & install on older cars, provided the block cooling layout is adaptable enough that you can put a heater core in place of this canbomb. I'm assuming this wtfbox is the ancient version of a heater core. It must be somewhat resemblant - I had a 1980 Thunderbird (R.I.P. baby) that had a heater core, so the technology shift must have been somewhere in the 70s.

Please Please divulge the name of the car to us.

I know im about to die from anticipation!

It's an el camino, isn't it?

Assuming you can get the afforementioned 10-13k ( I thought this may be a tad high for a 5 year old car, but then I realized that, hey! you're canadian! ) out of the current car, you should have enough to both pay off the current loan and buy the camino. You may want to consider then leasing a newer car to be your everyday car. 2 reasons: ONE- You don't want to have to rely on a car older than, well, even me to get around in and TWO - It may help prolong the life of your dream car.

That and the fact that, even though you haven't named it yet, I know most "dream cars" -at least for me- made in the 70's weren't exactly easy on the gas....

I can fit seven chicks in the back of this baby... and that's including Fat Rhonda.

I say do it.

If I found the Ghostbuster car for sale, I'd sell the shit out of my car. I'd probably sell a kidney as well.

You mean "Sell your time and services"

Do it Sabia theres only one line of text you need in this thread:

Anyone can drive a new car.

Also pleeeease tell us what it is, or at least me via PM, I'm a car nut. I'm about to trade my 77 280z for a 81 633csi (old school BMW ftw!)

Tell me too sabs, so I can egg you on the weekends!!

I'm about to sell my 76 280z to get an 84 300zx.. Atleast I stay true to Nissan/Datsun Nitram...

Oy I'll just get laughed at if I tell you guys D:

It's not my real real dream car - that would be a 66/67 Chev Impala SS or a V12 Vanquish, but it's my practical Dream car.

volkswagen bug/bus perhaps? im not very knowledgable with older cars and whatnot but i dont know many that have gas powered heaters in them.

THEY HAVE NAMES FOR WOMEN LIKE YOU!!!!1111!!!!

I won't say it here, but it starts with a "T" and ends with an "EASE" :P

Just buy it sab's. That way I can ninja my way down the street and find out for everyone... Or just tell us. There will be no laughing.

Sabia, I would have to say GET IT! If your dream car is in such good condition, and for so cheap, why not indulge you childhood fantasy? I mean i would drop anycar for a Shelby GT 500 or a '69 Camero SS, no matter what their condition is, because i have dreamed of these cars since i knew what cars were. If this dream car is in good condition, it'll probably last longer then the newer car anyhow, and besides, if worst comes to worst and you get in a crash, wouldn't you want a solid steel frame that would hold up and take little damage, or a carbon fiber frame that would be crushed like a pop can with the misfortune of being under a 400 lb man that's jumping for joy over a twinkie?

You'll get that giddy feeling everytime you hop in, also.

Well I'm hopefully going to go check it out this week and just see how good of condition it's in. My dad thinks i'm retarded.

If i had a chance to get my Dream car:
