Where can I find them?
Treasure Caskets will present themselves on rare occasions only in certain areas which are part of the original FINAL FANTASY XI package. They will not appear in any expansion areas.


How do I open them?
Depending on their fortunes, adventurers may encounter either unlocked Treasure Caskets or locked ones. Unlocked caskets will open readily, allowing treasure hunters to immediately get their hands on the desired loot. Locked caskets will present a more formidable challenge, in the form of a numerical combination lock that you and your party members will have to rack your brains to solve. So sharpen those wits and have your puzzle-solving skills at the ready!


What treasures will they hold?
Unlocked caskets will contain an assortment of temporary items to assist you in your battles. Locked caskets will house a variety of equipment and items, and for the most fortunate adventurers, even exclusive equipment not to be found elsewhere!
What riches lie in wait for you? You'll just have to track down one of these Treasure Caskets and see for yourself. Happy treasure-hunting!

This sounds... kinda silly. It's bad enough when you have to try to pop a coffer for af or something (well to be fair not as bad these days as it used to be but still annoying). If they put an exclusive and useful piece of gear in one of these it's going to really suck ass. Though with the limitation of areas that they can appear in, my guess would be that the exclusive gear obtainable from it will be lower level and probably not really overly necessary.

Your probably right, I think it's what SE was talking about having lower level content stuff for players.
 
lol And here I thought that it was going to be the prize for that "Field of Valor" thing they were going to have. Silly me and my assuming the obvious when dealing with SE.

Well, it shouldnt be too hard to find out what they are going to put in them. They'll prolly be all new gear unique to the chests themselves and thereby viewable by the data miners. Now to wait to see what pieces of crap/zomg! lowbie gear we'll get^^

Prolly gonna be tier armor:

Level 5, Dex +1~5, every ten levels you get an extra 5 dex.

That or the gear will be specific to the area...

Gusta is lv 5~10 gear, dunes 15~20, qufim 25, CN 30~40, so on.

There will be 75 gear I bet, place like dragon's areay, onzozo's, the places you leveled from 70-75... Before bibiki =o

I'm guessing it'd get capped by lv 50ish, akin to trump crown and other tier items.

And even if it didn't, at 1 dex every ten levels thats 75, - 5, /10, so +7 dex, not 35

Which is pretty decent.

Meant it as in 1~5 dex every 10 levels until 75 til you get 5 dex.

probably some gears to replace emp hairpin and LL boot maybe, those 2 are pretty standard cause theres no other options
 
Are people expecting the gear from these chests to be anywhere near as good as actual gear? Honestly, you'll be lucky if its not just event-type gear, with obscure, useless latents like the eerie cloak.

I don't think it'll be worthless... but no where near as good as what's out now. I'm sure there'll be some gems.

Maybe it's capped gear in the sense that you can only wear it up to a certain level? Piece of armor level 21-41 only. Long shot I know... but it would be something new.
