So.. after almost 2 years playing(since NA release.. i've lost track of time) and no trouble from this game that i recall.. I get a simple 3 file patch today.. and when I hit play:

"Version update process did not complete successfully, please re-install Final Fantasy XI"

*twitch*

Anyone else have a problem with it? Perhaps know how to fix it? I've tried just about everything I know.. can't get it reverted to the original files.. it still says that it was completed successfully.. and I don't know where my discs are.

I do, either Zeromous or Trippy has them .. like i told you before you posted.. >.>

Edit: Or on the side of my desk like we just found <.<

whatever you do, do not uninstall it <.<; it'll destroy your computer (Yes, SE sucks...)

Will it allow him to repair his installation with the discs or is he flat out boned here?

Try this :

On the login screen, choose "check files" (I think).
It will scan all Playonline directory and list the corrupted files.
Write them down along their path.
Ask a friend to send you the same files.
Save them over the corrupted files.

Log in and pray.

If that doesn't work. reinstall :(

Had already tried that one, it said playonlines files were fine, but when I told it to check "FINAL FANTASY XI" it just gave me the same message that the play button did about it not completing successfully and to reinstall.

Now I got home and back to work on it and reinstalled before I read this board.. at least.. I was trying until the uninstall of FFXI deleted part of my WINDOWS directory.......

I thought about calling POL and seeing about having them pay for repairs, but then Mokk says, "Well ya know, they probably cover that with a huge blanket statement of non-responsibility +1" and "Oh Well +2"

I am now trying to fight windows to get the files it needs to restart.. I really don't want to lose my harddrive because of this game.. if nothing else ever want to make me quit.. this is.

-.-

Do you have a system restore point from before you updated? That might fix the problem.

I've gone beyond the point of no return already. FFXI uninstallation(from the discs provided mind you) ate my OS for a light supper, or at least the hardware abstraction layer and the NTOS kernel. :(

I'm trying to save some files if I can.. if not i'm gonna lose a bunch.. *sigh*

You know, if you run the windows XP installation again, and somewhere use the option to "Repair an existing installation" it will just restore your OS's problems, I've had to do it about 20 times in the past for my family and it's a quick fix when windows gets fucked.

Yeah, I tried this already. However you see my Genuine WINDOWS XP (Ta-ta-ta-da) disc was a charged item. After 5 uses.. more money to microsoft, do not pass go, and do not collect 200 dollars(at least.. not for me)

Of note is this, if you ever come about to needing to reinstall FFXI, make a backup of anything important to you. The uninstallation deleted win.ini and a couple of other very vital files that it had no reason to delete.. but I saw them flash on the screen as being removed..

Going to try to restore with another set of discs.
