UCPD officers shot a student several times with a Taser inside the Powell Library CLICC computer lab late Tuesday night before taking him into custody.

No university police officers were available to comment further about the incident as of 3 a.m. Wednesday, and no Community Service Officers who were on duty at the time could be reached.

At around 11:30 p.m., CSOs asked a male student using a computer in the back of the room to leave when he was unable to produce a BruinCard during a random check. The student did not exit the building immediately.

The CSOs left, returning minutes later, and police officers arrived to escort the student out. By this time the student had begun to walk toward the door with his backpack when an officer approached him and grabbed his arm, at which point the student told the officer to let him go. A second officer then approached the student as well.

The student began to yell "get off me," repeating himself several times.

It was at this point that the officers shot the student with a Taser for the first time, causing him to fall to the floor and cry out in pain. The student also told the officers he had a medical condition.

UCPD officers confirmed that the man involved in the incident was a student, but did not give a name or any additional information about his identity.

Video shot from a student's camera phone captured the student yelling, "Here's your Patriot Act, here's your fucking abuse of power," while he struggled with the officers.

As the student was screaming, UCPD officers repeatedly told him to stand up and said "stop fighting us." The student did not stand up as the officers requested and they shot him with the Taser at least once more.

"It was the most disgusting and vile act I had ever seen in my life," said David Remesnitsky, a 2006 UCLA alumnus who witnessed the incident.

As the student and the officers were struggling, bystanders repeatedly asked the police officers to stop, and at one point officers told the gathered crowd to stand back and threatened to use a Taser on anyone who got too close.

Laila Gordy, a fourth-year economics student who was present in the library during the incident, said police officers threatened to shoot her with a Taser when she asked an officer for his name and his badge number.

Gordy was visibly upset by the incident and said other students were also disturbed.

"It's a shock that something like this can happen at UCLA," she said. "It was unnecessary what they did."

Immediately after the incident, several students began to contact local news outlets, informing them of the incident, and Remesnitsky wrote an e-mail to Interim Chancellor Norman Abrams.

They probably thought the guy was a terorist and had a bomb in his back pack ~.~

I sense a lot of firings at that college... even if it was "allowed by law" the publicity itself will make things bad for em

Let that be a lesson to you, kids: don't leave home without your library card.

"Hmmmm... says here your copy of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is three weeks overdue. Time for some old-fashioned waterboarding."

This whole thing has been blown waaaaaay out of proportion. The kid was screaming like a jackass in a public place, refusing to follow the police officer's orders, and then decides to be a martyr and start screaming shit like "PATRIOT ACT!!". I'm sorry, but when the police ask you to do something as simple as standing up and you refuse to cooperate, then you're asking for trouble.

Considering that the mob was about to go into riot mode after the first tasing (which the ignorant kid was warned about multiple times before it happened but kept up the "PATRIOT ACT!" bullshit), the police were put into a pretty awkward situation. If you're an officer with a ton of angry kids around you and a jackass refusing to cooperate, what are you going to do? If they started being soft and polite they probably would've gotten jumped.

Something doesn't add up, but the police really didn't handle it properly at all

No, it says right in the 2 articles what happened :p First, when it was getting late, the police asked the people in the library for their student ID cards, since only students were allowed in the library. This guy forgot his card, so the officers asked him to leave, to which he said he would.

At this time some time passed. I'm guessing he wanted to finnish what he was doing before he left.

Once he was on the way out, the officers grabbed him in the doorway and the guy said "Let go of me", and "Don't touch me". He also told the police officer that he had a medical condition.

Quite naturally, the guy with the vid didn't start it at this point, because let's face it, who bothers recording soemhting like that? I'm guessing he didn't start the camera untill things got more hectic, so there's quite a lot lost before the video was started. I'd even go as far as to say they already Tased him once before the video started, at which point the officers asked him to stand up, to which he responded he had a medical condition, and at this point the camera probably started.

Considering that the mob was about to go into riot mode after the first tasing (which the ignorant kid was warned about multiple times before it happened but kept up the "PATRIOT ACT!" bullshit), the police were put into a pretty awkward situation. He only screamed it once after the second tasing. And one of tose can stun you for 5-15 min, so if he did have a medical condition, he wouldn't have been unable to stand up. So the officers asking him to stand up was rather moronic if he was stunned.

They also threatened to tase one of the guys asking for the badge numbers since they refused to give it to them.

Either way, what the police did was wrong, even if the guy would have been an asshole.

Thats retarded, its the kids fault. THey asked him to leave, and he didnt.

What a faggot.

Believe what you want to, but unless you were there you have no idea what happened before the video was turned on. According to an LA Times article:

"The university said earlier, however, that Tabatabainejad was asked for his ID as part of a routine nightly procedure to make sure that everyone using the library after 11 p.m. is a student or otherwise authorized to be there. Campus officials have said the long-standing policy was adopted to ensure students' safety.

UCLA also said that Tabatabainejad refused repeated requests by a community service officer and regular campus police to provide identification or to leave. UCLA said the police decided to use the Taser to incapacitate Tabatabainejad only after the student urged other library patrons to join his resistance."

Until there's any way to prove what really happened, I think people making crazy rash decisions based on what they see in the video is ignorant. Remember there's always two sides to every story and if he was really trying to turn the library against the cops, I would've tased his ass in their shoes too.

What a retard.

You listen to police, end of story. Sure, they might not be technicly allowed to smack you around, but that isnt gonna stop them.

they say stand up, you stand up. They say stop yelling, you stop yelling.

People don't like the police in their face making sure that everyone's legit but at the same time they want a cop on every corner to make sure they don't get raped at night walking around the campus. I don't know, except that on the video it seemed like the kid was playing to the crowd, not trying to reason with the police which makes me suspicious of the events before the video was recording.

Edit: I will say that threatening someone with being tasered when they're asking for a badge number is definetly crossing the line, don't know if that's what really happened though. The video doesn't show what's going on to be honest.

If the kid was on his way out, why didnt they just let him leave?
and according to one article he was tazered while handcuffed? no, Thats bullshit. yea he was a jackass for not doing what he was told and then making a fuss about it. I'll give you that. But those police handled it very wrong. You dont tazer someone for not leaving a stupid library, honestly. And threatening an onlooker for requesting badge numbers, oh hell no. That's the final straw

He couldn't stand up. Being tasered on that setting for those kind of intervals stuns your nervous system and motor responses. Especially if he had a medical condition, it would've been surprising if he had been physically capable of standing up.

after being tasered one tends to be somewhat paralyzed for about 15 minutes after.. it targets muscles and such nerves and whatnot. You wanna make an attempt and see? :P

Ever watch a drunk kid running from the cops then get tasered. Yeah, try and get up after that. If you have someone physically in your grasp there should be hardly any reason to taser them.

Sure, lemme go buy a Taser RQ.

It's not THAT hard to get up after being tased. It takes a few seconds to gather yourself but the kid was going for some other approach. He was making coherent sentences so if he really did have a problem, I'm guessing it was mental, rofl.

It depends on how LONG you get shocked. That kid was getting shocked on a fairly high setting for up to about 5 seconds.

Yeah, but he's shouting what? "PATRIOT ACT!" instead of saying "I can't stand up". If the officers expected him to stand up, then it was because it was on a low voltage setting. Though the amount of times he was shocked does strike a cause for concern, there's nothing wrong with the procedure they took. It was just one dumbass trying to look like a rebel.

Actually I read about this some and change my mind. The police do have to give you their ID but not when they're in the middle of apprehending a subject. Trying to interfere with the police while they're in the act of doing something dangerous is at least, retarded.
