US megachain Gamestop have never had much of a foothold here in the UK - they have a couple of shops but are tiddlers compared to big fish GAME. This may change.

Former high street kings Woolworths (no longer connected to the American company F.W. Woolworth) have fallen on hard times and gone into adminstration - Gamestop have spotted an opportunity and are reportedly set to bid for half of Woolworths' 815 UK outlets. This will instantly make them the UK's biggest games retailer,

A source told MCV, "GAME frustrated GameStop when it bought GameStation. Bosses at GameStop had pretty much given up on launching a UK assault – but now, thanks to Woolies, that door is open again."

Good or bad? Discuss.

Gamestop is a terrible organization, thank you.

So I heard from those "Zero Originality" videos from a while back. Not surprisingly the guy got banned from Youtube for blowing the whistle on Gamestop.

Anyway, Gamestop said they aren't taking over Woolworths but I'm not convinced just yet.

Bad.

I never liked Wollies, except for the Pic&Mix.

I remember we had a Woolworths here when I was little, I think (like Marks&Spencer) they pulled out of Canada. I loved Marks&Spencer *cry*

I take it Gamestop said they weren't gonna take over that either?

Pretty much. Instead they closed a lot of them down, at least out here, allowin' only a few to stay open. Oddly enough, the two EB's left in my town, one is about two miles from a GS and the other is in a mall DIRECTLY below a Gamestop. The only thing most EB's have kept are their names. The promotions, uniforms, telephone greetin', etc. is all "Gamestop". Just the sign on the door and telephone/address directory says EB Games. I miss the sales EB use to put on, they were a lot better than Gamestop's and gave more trade-in credit as well.

GameStop SUCKS. At least in Sweden. GAME is so much better. I'd assume its the same way in the UK, so I wouldn't be worried about GAME customers moving over to GameStop.

In the UK Gamestation is better than GAME but they are both equally good places to buy from. Though technicaly GAME owns Gamestation, GAME has given Gamestation the freedom to do their own thing.

Ah yes Woolworths pulled out in Canada because no one understands them, or something similar. I studied it this year in University infact when talking about "Globalisation". Initially it was Woolworths buying out some company in Canada and turned them into that, but later had to sell/pull out.

As I don't purchase much games anymore I could care less which shop (GAME/Gamestation) is better. There's way too many alternatives, but if I had to buy a PS3/360 soon, I would go to those 2 major shops and hunt out deals/packages.
