Around half of U.S. troop fatalities are caused by blood loss from battlefield injuries. Now, with another 30,000 troops deploying to Afghanistan, the Pentagon is pushing for medical advances that can save more lives during combat. The Defense Department’s latest research idea: Stop bleeding injuries by turning pigs into the semi-undead. If it works out, we humans could be the next ones to be zombified.

First field test to be initiated on 12/12/12.

Get out!

Actually makes for a good read.

Not sure how plausible this is.

And couldn't the amount being given for funding be better served going directly into medical care on the front lines? Could triage and transplants not be made more accessible.

I'll be curious to see the swine outcome.

And really what would most mortally wounded soliders have to lose? They could couple the injection with a nice dose of heroin so the experience is enjoyable. Because I'm not too sure keeping them 'as close to death as possible' would make them completely unaware of their surroundings.

Well, according to the article, the Zombie Cocktail shuts down brain and heart functions, so I don't think they'd be aware at all.

edit: I'm kidding about the first field test date.

But will their new zombie persona crave brains!?

That's great, haven't we learned anything from zombie movies?
Better get your copies of The Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z ready.
And double tap.

Yeah I don't even recall seeing a date mentioned.

I mean I suppose it sounds like a useful drug. I just have an uneasy feeling in meh belly about the sound of it as well.

A viable hibernation drug is also one of the holy grails of sustained space travel as well. Be interesting to see how this pans out.

Even a short-term hibernation like the one they're describing could have serious medical utility.

Nut up or shut up, Tiael.

Gentlemen... BEHOLD!

This is made of win. If the zombie apocalypse won't come round on it's own, we'll make it! I love it!

That is one of the creepiest looking people that I have ever seen in my whole life. :shok:

It's because he's ginger, and we all know that gingers are EVIL!
