So ummm World of Warcraft mysteriously disapeared from my hard drive and I found and application for a visa classic card beside my FFXI box... sign?

Actually I uninstalled it myself and I have started scribbling away at my visa app. so me and Falkner can finally return. We deleted our chars and killed our gamecards for WoW so we have no choice but to get back. And I plan to pay for this with my Crappy job at burger king where I sweat bullets on a hot day and wipe my armpits with burgers for that extra flavor! No I dont wipe them there... maybe I do in my mind but I dont for real. Anyways back to the visa application but first! If I get a Student Visa card do I need to actually be attending a university? what if I wanna be a burger flipper for a few years first? HELP MEEE!

Most credit card companies these days will give you an account regardless of your credit/job history. The "student" cards are basically just for people just getting started in credit, which usually means kids just starting college, but not always. You can probably get a decent card with a low limit even if you don't have much prior history.

I applied for the Citibank Upromise card almost 2 years ago, and I had no credit history at all. I mean that literally- I'd never had my name on an apartment lease, no car payments, no previous credit cards, not even listed on a utility bill. I still got a card with a good rate and a $1000 limit. Since then they've increased my limit to $1500, and I don't doubt that after I pay off the massive bill I incurred on it buying plane tickets last month that they'll bump me up to 2k, heh. So getting a card is usually a piece of cake.

Side note- the Citibank online payment system is probably the most user-friendly one I've seen. My husband has a Chase card, and their website gives him nothing but grief. He hasn't even been able to pay his card online in months cause their site is buggy and times out every time he tries to update his information. But with mine, I can make a payment all the way up til the day it's due and not get a late fee. <3

If possible get a VISA debit card that minuses from you checking account but DO NOT GET a credit line.

why?

Only get a credit line when you can AFFORD to pay for it. Because you will learn the hard way why college guys have such bad credit.

<- taking up a trade skill anyways I dont need no edumacation! I will have to see if CIBC carries a Visa Debit card because that would kick assssp.

Credit cards are not for the weak-willed, admittedly. But if used properly, they can be a great tool for building future credit. It was only this past month that I actually carried a balance on my card, rather than paying it off in full, for the first time. And that's mainly because of the unexpected expenses of flying the family out to VA for a job interview. The card will be paid off again as soon as the paychecks from said job start coming in, heh.

The real key is to only use the card for things that you know you have the funds to pay for, or RARE emergencies. And I don't mean emergencies like "OMG my favorite band is having a concert, but I don't have the money for tickets". Treat it just like an extension of your checking account, and don't carry a balance from month to month, and you'll never have to pay the financing on the card.

The other benefit to a credit card, in addition to proper use giving you a good credit history, is that they often have perks that debit cards don't have. My Upromise card, for example, gives me a refund of 1 to 5% of my purchases (depending on what I buy) deposited into a college savings fund for my daughter.

Dont think CIBC has one, but i know RBC does.

(for those who arent canadian, CIBC = Canadian Impierial Bank of Commerce, and RBC=Royal Canadian Bank.)
