Wigging me out, has been happening for some time on my laptop. I initially thought it was something to do with iTunes since it started happening with my ipod after I updated to version 8. However, today I tried to connect my phone and transfer the photos on there and got the same error. This happens on all my USB ports, even the one on the back. I've tried:
-Uninstalling all the drivers and controllers, and restarting my laptop.
-Unplugging the power source (battery) and letting it sit for a bit.
-Just plain restarting the computer.
These seem to be what other sites are recommending, but they aren't working. What

Have you tried connecting another USB device to your laptop? How many USB ports do you have on the laptop?

I've tried connecting my ipod, my phone, my usb keyboard and my 360 controller. I've tried all four ports on my laptop.

Check in your bios to see if usb emulation is turned on. In all honesty it shouldnt matter but I have seen it make the difference

Another possibility (which can depend on how old the computer is, how often the ports were used, and how they were treated [slamming the cables in, ripping them out, etc.]) is that they could now be bad.

Its hard to say that all 4 ports drop at the same time. but if they all run on the same bus then its possible. What kind of laptop is it?

USB controllers can fail, if the controller on the MB has failed. It happens. Shitsux, and it happens lol.

Toshiba Satellite A135-S2276.
Honestly, if the USB controller is something that can be damaged by rough handling, then it's probably the case :dur:

Laptops are designed for the normal wear and tear, but not indefinitely. How long have you had it?

Gonna be two years next month. Got it for mah 17th birthday.

Wish for a new laptop for your 19th then

I only really use it for music and schoolwork, so it's not like I expect much from it. But now it's started doing this, and I don't like it >:
I'd get something better, but we're pooooooooooooooooor.

From my experience it's probably the closest answer you can get. Sadly there is no real way to repair it.

The only way you could repair it, is to replace the entire mother board. That will cost nearly as much as a brand new laptop if you don't have warranty covering it.

today's resident computer help winner :)

if it's warranty-covered, awesome.

if not; sorry and that really blows :|

Meh, I looked up the diagrams for your notebook, the USB ports are soldered directly on the MB which sucks (integrated controller) and it's connected to the main board via plex strip no wider than 1 inch =\... It looks like it would easily be snapped off if you were even slighty hard on the notebook. Was hoping it was a dongle hub, but that's not the case.

Try this too be sure...

Check out your device manager, is the controller appearing in there? You said you reinstalled the controller drivers so they should be, if not, then it's possible the controller is completely dead. If they're in there, delete and remove them, click Actions and "Scan for hardware changes" to make sure Windows is actually picking them up.

If your controllers do appear in the list under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers", after that step, there should be at least 1 Standard/Universal PCI -> USB controller and a "hub".

Right click on a controller, goto Properties and click the Advanced tab, make sure the system is actually allocating bandwidth to the ports itself. You will see a 5-15% bandwidth allocation if they are. Right click on a hub and click the Power tab, and check the power allocation. It will tell you how much power is available for each hub and port. If they are, normal, and since your devices are not working, go to Target or WalMart or some cheap store and buy a USB light. They're an average of $5-$10 and is a good way to test to see if your computer is actually powering the port. If it comes on, then it just means you have a glitch somewhere preventing Windows from communicating with your devices. If not, your controllers are good, but your ports are bad.

If it's the latter, the pcmcia card should hold you up till you get a new laptop.

USB problems suck. And so do Toshiba motherboards (just found out).

Weird...

I charge my iPod at work sometimes if it's nearing dead battery and I plugged it in to the USB yesterday. Nothing. "Device not recognized" blah blah blah, makes no sense because it worked a couple days previously. Can't be bothered to troubleshoot it because idc about my computer at work, but you saying that is a coinkidink.
