USB Device Not Recognized

Did you try running the diagnostics tool in iTunes? As for laptops, I've had mine for about 5 years and it has it's problems, but the USB ports are still going strong as far as I can tell.

The only way you could repair it, is to replace the entire mother board. That will cost nearly as much as a brand new laptop if you don't have warranty covering it.

after 2 years and a half? I was tempted to say it was out of warranty lol.

There's always the option that he may have extended the warranty...

yeah but considering he said he was not a millionaire, people in the same situation tends to go over it and leave with the 1yr manufacturer warranty in the end even though it's usually more useful on a laptop than on a regular desktop pc. I was always offering the rep. plans when I was working at Staples and my old computer shop and god i hated to see the face of people changing because it was like 100-200$ lol.

If your using XP it could be your hardware needs Vista. I'm assuming it came with Vista and you switched to XP?

If you are using Vista maybe a reinstall might help.

Or you might need a BIOS udate, this is more likely the case as this is a common Toshiba problem.

2 year old laptop. It was designed for XP.

But probably "Vista-Capable".

wait wat?

Gosh, how many memory modules I sold due to the fact companies were trying to clean their 256mb modules stock by stuffing them in their "vista ready" laptops lol.

It came with Vista. I tried using XP for a while, but I found it to be a bit of a hassle (although I can't recall what exactly went wrong in retrospect, but...)
Problem seems to have gotten worse. May be related or not, but now if I put my laptop in sleep mode it'll refuse to come on again, sometimes shutting down entirely. Afterward it takes several tries to get it to start up again, and any websites I was logged into I am logged out of (firefox-wise, I haven't really tried it with my other browsers).
Shutting it down properly and starting it up afterward poses no problems, though.

Depending on how much you want to use your USB, i'd do a reinstall first because a failed BIOS update can potentially destroy your computer.

If that doesn't do the trick I'd try the BIOS update if using your USB ports is that important. After all you'll need to buy another computer anyway because if you have the same problem others have with that model, even using the PC card usb emulators will not work.
