A group of researchers including Andrew Jones, Ian McDowall, Hideshi Yamada, Mark Bolas and Paul Debevec from the University of Southern California (PDF) have developed technology that produces a 3D hologram viewable from all sides.

This technology is described as a low-cost 3D display system with a form factor that offers advantages for displaying objects in 3D. The system is comprised of a rapidly spinning mirror covered by an anisotropic holographic diffuser, a motion controller, high-speed video projector and a standard PC.

This is pimp. They can put a camera on a dude running and the program (on the computer) translates it for the holodisplay. Looks exactly like the recorded messages R2D2 plays back during the Star Wars movies.

They have a demo video on the project site as well (87mb) worth checking out.

My god I did not think the future of gaming and other displays would be here so soon... it's only 2007 for crying out loud... I give it 5 years before Holo-displays are made for government use, and 3 years after that before commercially being marketed to the public for games, videos, and broadcasts.

ever hear Carlin's bit on what year it really is? i'll try to find it later...

thats bitchin tho Cmdr, good find

It's a start, but I doubt an iteration of this holographic tech will make it to the mainstream. The problem I see with this is the fact that it utilizes a spinning mirror at high rpm. Besides all the safety issues, the mirror's dimensions ultimately dictates the maximum size of the image. I can't imagine a holographic display on my desk that measures 2 feet cubed (I'm spoiled by my 22 inch widescreen) when we're loving all the free space the current gen of flatpanels bring to the table. I want to see technology that's fast enough to start and stop light waves with ease already! Wassup bro?

This is also only the first iteration of the technology. In 5 years they'll have alternate methods that likely won't rely on high-RPM mirrors, and can begin to commercialize it from there.

8 years to public purchasing isn't that off-base from reality... but then again look at the first cell phones that hit the civvy market. In general it seems like they're trying to avoid releasing first-gen products that will be shunned shortly afterwards so they may wait until the things look hip and cool before selling them.

This topic is a lie. USC's on the east coast.

But seriously, I could see this technology being quite useful. If even just to eliminate the need of relying solely on an umpire in baseball games!

lolAntor.

But seriously? Yay! We now get HoloNet :D I want to talk to Darth Sidious NOW.

What happens to all the fat computer/comic nerds (IE: Guys like the comic nerd guy from The Simpsons) once porn goes 3-D? This world is almost getting too advanced for itself.

They finally lose their virginity.

I think the 'solid' holograms are still just a bit far off yet. Take the pun as you will.

Imagine if you're actually running through a zone - such as in FFXI - and you can see your tune in 3D. Things like weaponskills and skill chains would be really cool. I can only imagine how Gravitation would look 3D.

Less like Pokemon and more like Yu-Gi-Oh!.

I can imagine we'd have more relic weapons show up as more and more people spend MORE AND MORE TIME in ffxi...
