Using Rank as a party member filter?

Hi all,

A friend from my LS was playing WHM in the dunes last night. She first partied with several inexperienced players (I don't use the N word, since I have always disliked been called one when I first started. :)). She did survive very well. *Disband*. Then she got in a party with all Rank 3+ players, and the party went a lot better.

So I am curious, based on your experiences, is Rank a good approximation for people's ability to play? Would it be a good tool to filter the "experienced" vs. the "not so experienced" players? If someone is using Rank to differentiate players, what Rank are you looking for?

Thanks for sharing!.

Oh, yeah, Rank 4

No, I partied with this new player named Ordon last night, he was a very good player, even though he had no sub. He knew how to skillchain right, had good equipment, and he tanked very well. He was Rank 2, i believe, and no it wasn't a second character, i asked him. So it really doesn't matter what rank you are.

I'm only rank 2, and i believe i play very well. (last night i was in a party where it was a NIN and WAR trying to attempt blink tanking) and the NIN was Rank 3, and i checked and she had Voke raring to go, utsusemi up too, but she didnt voke when the mob turned to the mages, the WAR and I voked it. Then when the WAR had to leave, and i ran to Selbina to get arrows and the WHM needed Cure II, so when i came back, the Ninja was pulling stuff, and i asked if i could pull again, she said no, then after while she said I need a break from pulling. So i pulled....and she didn't voke often and couldn't keep hate, and she didn't participate in SCing, and I am a SAM, thats why i'm there, for SC support, so basically for most of the time, i was the Pulling/Tanking/Can't SC SAM...i was ok with it because everyone else was incompetent. Then we invited a new WAR after someone else left, it was a new player, and i tought her how to SC, so me and the WAR tanked, i pulled, and we got to SC most fights, i was happy, but the ninja i was not happy with, couldn't tank worth crap, didn't want to pull, basically sat there and showed off her Utsusemi...and she is Rank 3, higher than me, you'd think she would be better, no, not really, so Rank doesn't matter, its skill...

I use rank as a party filter normally if I'm making a party. Unless I'm in the dunes I usually invite only experienced players (rank2 or above) and after lvl 35 or so I consider rank 2 unacceptable too. Occasionally you will run into players who just powerlevel and don't "waste their time" farming, questing, or doing missions. In my experiences, most of these ppl aren't that good and at lvl 42, if you're still rank 2 (do a /sea in the Crawler's Nest and you'll see what im talking about), then it's time to take a break from levelling to focus on the other aspects of the game.

If I party in any of the low lvl areas, I try to make the party all rank 5+ or with people I know. From my experance people low rank tend to go AFK more, disband with little or no warning, have dumb job combo, or are just plain dumb. Although there are alot of rank 5 people out there that are noobs.

After I get my ninja to 18, I'm no longer gonna party with random people, I'm going to start a static from level 10-37 with my ranger, yea that's right. Hehe.

Because no matter how high your level, or how high your rank, There is no cure for stupidity! ... Although, I would suggest than Maat is a test of your skills, and morons will never get past Lv70. IN FACT I heard that most people who do quit this game are either realllllly early levels, or 50-60. And on to note that, I've seen a level 65 blackmage with no subjob.
Forgot his name...

Also some people who are new to this game catch on very quickly. ( mostly people who have experience in other mmorpg's though)

The only time I use rank as a factor is when I was lvling a job for lv 30-50, if they had rank 5 by 30 I could assume they had the yhoat/altep crystals so we could avoid that cookie cutter shit of a hole noob zone the Crawler's Nest. If they didnt have the crystals they werent invited. And the time for being snobbish was well worth it if you ever partied in EAD or Quicksands, Yhoatar as early as possible with a good team.

Any other time it really doesnt matter...

Get those damn crystals at least Tele-Altep as soon as possible like lv 30(dont say you cant cause I did at 30 and i was a shitty thf) for the love of god...

I've seen a level 65 blackmage with no subjob

He had a subjob. There is a way to remove your sub. It is a bug, so im not gona post it here....(not 100% sure I know how to do it correctly anyways)

Actually this particular BLM has never had a SJ, Bono i believe is her name (fem taru) not that bad of a player, i think shes trying to prove something...

Anyways.

As to rank, I'll usually take the higher ranked person if theres one available but its the LAST thing as a pt leader i look at. However i agree with the above, if your less than rank 3 by crawlers, you need to stop leveling and go on a mission. Missions are a lot of fun and great to do as a linkshell. Also you get money for doing them! And something FF players love: PLOT! To me, main job/ subjob is far more important than rank, but generally the higher ranked guy is a little more experienced.

When you get into the high ranks, (7-10) the person almost is guarenteed to have at least 1 lvl 60+ job, so he knows the ropes. (Or should.) Of course he may be really really good at his main job but terrible as what ever low lvl job you guys are playing so its really not a great idea to judge based on rank :P.

IMO, ranks are good indicators whether the players are experienced or not. However it is not THE BEST. There are still sucky players at high levels and with high ranks.
Moreover, there are experienced players who are really good starting new characters *Partied with a Rank1 War, really good as he is experienced as he has 3 lvl 60+ jobs in his main*
But seriously, don't Judge a book by its cover... Well some, but not all

As a generalization, rank *is* a good indicator of party quality. There are exceptions.

I'm rank 5 and I've been leveling a handful of new jobs which are all the teens right now -- so the dunes is a common place for this. A handful of people from my LS (everyone was rank 5 -- I think one was rank 7) decided to all go level their low jobs there and we FLEW through the levels. At one point someone had to leave and we ended up recruiting a rank 1 player. He was pretty green but he made a couple of comments on how he couldn't believe how much XP we were getting and how fast we were going. He said he'd never been in a party that worked so well.

To me, we were just playing at what I'd consider to be a normal pace -- it was not an exceptional night. Whenever I'm in a party with respectable ranks, things just tend to go well. Bad like and the occasional mistake might still happen, but it's rare.

When I look for parties or people to join a party, I obviously look for the usual factors (right sort of job to fill the missing spot in the party, right level, etc.) but I *DO* look at their rank.

To me Rank doesnt matter
i am rank 1 and a pld some people say i have excellent skills as a beginner pld XD
and yes Ordon is a great player i thought he was gonna be some bimbo who cant play

Lol uhm what do you mean by that XD
my mind isnt working at the moment

If someone is Rank 1 and new to the game then they don't know as much about how to play. If someone is a higher rank they have been playing longer and are more experienced. But this does not necessarily mean they are good. I swear I've seen rank 1 level 10 people who seem to be better players than some rank 3 lvl 30 people

In conclusion, it's a good newbie filter, but not a good n00b filter.

Rank never hurts.
To me, I look at people with higher rank as those who care enough about the game to further themselves. If they care about that, they probably care about having a good party and they probably know their role.

I was in a 2 parties today where the "tank" didn't voke. WAR is useless to a party if they don't voke (I thought we all knew that). WARs that refuse to voke should at least mention that to parties prior to joining, so the party has the option to pick someone else.

The first party was great...
The leader booted the WAR after causing some big problems due to lack of voking. I used the N word after the leader booted him. The leader then decides to tell me to "shut up faggit". I'm like, "Me?". He says, "Yes." I disband and proceed into /tell mode as I go find a much better party. I stayed in touch with one guy in their group and he mentioned it still wasn't going too good with them. /shocked.

I think rank and equipment, etc. all add up to someone caring about the game and their experience online and in a group setting. I think rank is a very valid thing. However, there are those with rank who don't know their ass from a hole in the ground and there are those with little rank that are solid players.

You always have the right to leave if you don't like it. :)
I did earlier and was never happier about leaving a party.
I only encouraged the new WAR in voking and helped him understand why and helped him with the macro...So when I used the phrase noob to descibe his lackluster play, that was A, mostly like big brother to little brother talk and B, True no matter how you slice it and dice it.
Leader called names immediately and I left immediately. I was hoping he'd die with one less....Which he did. Muwahahaha.
/shocked again.

Rank

Well, rank 1-2 can be lumped into the same boat as new players, not necessarily idiots, but new players. Rank 3 means you've been around for a whle, and are probably somewhat more experienced than rank 1-2s. Mission 3-3 is a pain, so if you're rank 4 you've probably got a job at level 30 or 40. A lot of people have high level friends that just help them get to rank 5 for airship pass.

If you're rank 6-10 then chances are you've got a job level 60+, those missions are pretty difficult.

So, in conclusion, the only way you can do rank is if you go 1-5 or 6-10, and there just aren't tons of rank 6-10 players. You're almost always going to have to take your chances.

Yea don't you need to be 55+ to fight shadow lord?

And yea the level 60~ Blackmage's name is Bono or w.e, im shure of it.
And if he is trying to point out something... I can see what it is. People aren't assertive enough in this game. They don't have heart to boot people.

Or, I have heard of this rumored glitch where you change jobs really fast... yadada... no one will tell me... ; ; /cry

Maybe s/he's just pointing out that the main 6 jobs can make a highly effective party together without the need of subjobs.
war thf mnk blm whm rdm
Or maybe just trying to make a challenge.

oh lol am just to lazy to do ranks for some reason, i dont give a damn about my ranks i give a damn about my skills O.o
ranks = not something that depends on your skills
