Valkrum dunes is a nice place the first time you play FFXI but as you go on to other place it is fustrating. ive been there for 5 weeks and my pld is only lvl 14 please someone tell me a better place !!!

Maze Worms are good, and at 15+ you can go to Korolloka tunnel (Off Bastok Mines through Zehrun) and hit the worms there for easy xp. Both these places tend to be BYOP these days, though.

good luck finding anyone to go there. I try all the time. just get alot of "no teh doons r teh only place 4 this lvl"

fools -.-;;

That's why you /slap them and walk away...

Honestly, making a party to go to the Maze or something isn't hard, just need to find people who hate the dunes(hey, isn't that about...everyone?)

My static went to Korroloko Tunnel at level 16...it was like mana from the gods!

Yea you guys hauled ass in there.

You can also put a party together in the dunes and then ferry their asses over to Buburimu (similar area, less camped though). Just please stay below deck unless you have silent oils.

Valkurm Dunes proves that ignorance is bliss. The first time through, you're like "oh, this isn't so bad." Then you progress in the game and leveling gets REALLY OLD really fast, and you realize how horribly inefficient the dunes are. Then bad stuff happens. Yeah.

The last job I put thru the dunes was so nice... I was there 3 days and every party I got invited to had a PLer with it.

Under the right circumstances the Dunes can be extremely profitbale exp wise. These right circumstances are few and far between, usualy consisting of a LS and friends deciding before hand to aprty in the dunes. People will actualy have gear/spells/food and some semblance of capped magic/weapon/combat skills. Bugging a LS buddy to PL always helps.

It's also profitable Gil wise too.

A lot of the mobs you fight in the dunes drop Fire Crystals...

Get a whole party to have Signet, almost each kill drops you 6 Fire Crystals...hmm, exp AND money =P

There's a lot of problems with PLing in the dunes. First, if you're PLing people who are there on their first job, you are most likely not helping them learn how to do it (their job, that is), and they won't have a realistic idea of what they can or can't fight.

Second, a lot of parties immediately fall into the "OMG WE HAVE PL LET'S GO FIGHT BOGIES" mindset--that is, fighting mobs that are way too hard for them, which, sure, if you have a WHM nearby healing, might be doable, but it's gonna take you a dog's age and in the end you won't get as much XP as you would taking on normal mobs for your level.

Third, a lot of the PLers I've seen in the dunes aren't even high enough level to be doing it. If you're still catching agro there, you shouldn't be PLing anyone. A lot of the PLers I've dealt with in the dunes are half naked or have horrid gear, too, which might not be a problem if they were high enough level, but like I just said...A level 27 Elvaan WHM wearing nothing but a justice badge is not a powerleveler--it's a fucking liability.

You know its actually kinda fun if you dont go in with high expectations. I am farming for Ranger atm so I decided to level Drk while I waited for stuff to sell. I have gone from 11-18 in two days. Sure the exp rate SUCKS most of the time, but there isnt much pressure at that level. Of course, the two times I have gone through before that were awesome. Ninja and Ranger absolutely hauled ASS going through. Course I dropped any party that looked like crap but hey, I could afford to be picky.

Seriously though. You're experience in the dunes is all in who you play with. Get a group of people who know what their doing and the dunes is a wonderful place. My first two times through the dunes werent bad at all. I played as a warrior till 18, did the subjob quest, lvled Monk to 20 and had a wonderful time there, this was ofcourse before the ps2 release. Once again, im not trying to target a group of poeple, but.. facts are facts.. I've experienced the difference. Right about the time of the ps2 release was about when I had started to level up Dark Knight, and that is when things got horrible when it came times to go to the dunes. Horrible job combos, or just awful players left and right. Getting though the dunes then was really tough, took me a few weeks, whereas before it only took like a few days if anything.

Same thing now, go to the dunes and you going to be there for a long while unless you happen to join a party of good players or make your own party of good players.

I've been in the dunes that last couple days I've played and fared better the second than the first. Still, if there was somewhere else I could go to work my black mage up I'd seriously think about it if I knew there would be someone to party with and maybe someone to help me get there in one piece. I was sick of the attitudes and the stupidity I saw in the dunes the first night. Now I'm bearing through it as best I can.
