I had left with Chains of Prom expansion. Yes a very long time ago. I have recently been debating on starting again.

Now first I need to know is do they keep characters from previous accounts still? There was debate on this a long time ago and at first it was 1 year or 2 year in the rumor mill. So since its been over 2 years..way over..will i still have my account?

The xp system has it changed much? I was level 65 Samurai before I left so I just want to know will there be times where I will be at Boyada tree for 5+ hours in a static party daily to even level once? Or has it improved? Solo xp possible now?

Lastly is has the UI and Controls changed since then? Any modifications allowed or is it the same old hand cramping controls?

I don't think you'd be able to reobtain tyour old chaarcter. I think they only keep them on the server for 8 months, unsure.

Exp system is basiclally the same, sense CoP they shortend that amount of EXP needed for 50 to 75, added alots of new zones for exping, as well as new ways to gain EXP other then parties, such as besieged and campain. Also added bonus field operations in the original outside areas that grant you bonus exp depending on the mobs you take down. Also the ability to level-sync (cap) your level with another party member to gain EXP with lower level parties have been added. Also, EXP for Easy Prey to Decent Challenge monsters has been slighty increased. Solo play is an option with some of the new jobs as well. I've seen alot of SAM/DNC (Dancers) soloing as of late.

Controls?... Same. :D

exping is like 1000x easier now than it was just a few years ago. It's like sex, now.

And I've heard of a few cases where people got their characters back after a very long time (don't know how long exactly). Best to just check and see for yourself~! :D

My suggestion: whether or not you get your char back, come back to the game. Succumb to its temptuous lure! Starting anew, you'd prolly be able to regain anything you lost in just a few months, anyhow ;)
 
So you left for like 3 years?
I'm 90% sure if you participate the "welcome back" event, you WILL get your character back, but maybe you have to change your name.
SE claimed in user agreements that they have the right to remove your character from the list if you stop playing for 3 months, but they don't actually do this, at leatst they will keep your character info in an old computer, it's not hard.

So, Exping now is awesome, BUT sometimes leads to long waiting periods before you actually start EXPing, and then sometimes ends with you dissapointing/being dissapointed in the PT? o.o;;
 
i used the return campaign thing to recover an old character i hadn't played in almost 2 years so you might be able to get it back.
 
Yah I can get my characters back...I had just gotten off the phone with SE.

They are allowing me back with the "Return To van" campaign thing. I have to create a new account and they gave me new keys for my games. Once I buy a new Content ID i have to call them to move my characters to those ID's.

SO it seems even though its been nearly 5 years is my rough estimate. I can get them back.

Really happy with SE CSSR's. The supervisor worked with me and said though I dont have 3 of 2 verified info matched (Phone number old one)... i had the other 2 components so he allowed me to get my characters back.

Yah not having the 64-65 ish sam I had would have been a terrible blow... I want to return and goof around in between warhammer not dedicate fully to FFXI to get back what I had....

I left before Aht Urhgan expansion and then came back a year later or so, it may have been longer. When I returned, it was really difficult to "catch up" so to speak with other players in regard to missions/quests/assault. You'll likely have this same problem, but best of luck to you. My advice to you is, the first thing you should do is gather up your runic portal access, because you'll need them if you plan to do any xp.

I wish I knew that part before hand. I spent Friday evening unlocking the warp in Sandy to White and then doing the boarding pass quest.

Saturday I spent a few hours configuring my macro's and decided to farm in Odell's till I got used to the controls...then I headed out to Whitegate.

I was told by old friends I finally ran into about getting those portals...and something about Maw (spent like 45 min in Bat looking for it)... I really hardly accomplished anything at all.

I was really taken back by the lack of people in Sandoria. It used to be packed with all level ranges.. the only thing that was the same was an old Bazaar since PC launch ChaoChao ( if from Valefore you know who that is).

I am toughing it out a little but I am starting to wonder should I have gone through this much trouble =\. Well I have a free month I will see what I can make of it.
