Hey, guys. I'm thinking of getting a new video card for my notebook. It's a HP dv2700 Notebook PC. The video card I have is a nVidia MCP67M and the game runs very slow.

My question to you is, by experience, which is the best video card out there for FFXI right now that is in a decent price range? ($100-$150 is as much as I'll go.)

Any feedback would be appreciate and thanks so much in advance.

bump. Just got taken off newbie mode and can actually post now. xD

You generally can't replace graphic chips in laptops especially with such an old notebook. Yes it is a chip rather than a card as laptops have limited space and an actually graphics card would take up more room than anything else. I don't think any electronic stores even sell the chips standalone. They really should mark notebooks as a GPU chip rather than an entire GPU card.

You'd be best off probably picking up a new PC.

I doubt you can upgrade the GPU in this HP. I think its highly unlikely, because very few laptops have that possibility! Many Dells can though..

What you could try though:

- Update your video card driver from HP.com
- Check your card is not getting too hot, with freeware like speedfan
- Buy a new PC/laptop <.<

Let's hope I dont have to buy a new PC..This thing isnt that old. All the specs are pretty nice on it I just lack a good video chip lol.

Thanks for the replies though.

More then likely you won't be able to change it. I can only think of a few laptops, usually straight up gaming laptops that have interchangeable chips.

I can only think of Alienware that had chips that were changable. This may have changed recently.

How old is the laptop because FFXI should be older than that computer, and you should be able to run XI with out any problems.

unless overheating is a prob, in which case you'll notice tons of lag playing the game after an hour or so.

I have FFXI on my D620 with an nVidia Quadro NVS 110M running at 1024x786/1024x1024 and no problems outside of the norm. Do you experience this problem all the time or during certain events/places?

Check your chipset driver if you've ever reformatted the laptop, and hell check to make sure it's updated anyways from the hp site. I had major problems on my HP before (especially overheating) when the chipset driver wasn't installed correctly.

Only thing other than that I'd say is to install an unlocked graphics driver. I know laptopvideo2go.com has support for geforce/nforce models, but I'm not sure about yours. Somebody can help me verify I'm sure.

Thanks for the replies. In regards to the lag I often find it in during walking in town and a little bit in combat. I have upgraded my drivers and the computer I have is only about 8months old, so I'm not sure of the lag. I have pretty good ram, about 197GB of space left, so I'm stumped. I did download SpeedFan and that seems to help only slightly.

After looking on POL's site and the cards it supports, I have noticed that my chip is not supported. Maybe thats it? Idk, I am fed up with this and tempted to buy an XBOX just for playing FFXI.

There are not many GPU options available for laptops. If you want to stay within the price range you desire, there would probably be one available upgrade at that price.

You will have to contact your manufacturer, since laptop graphics cards are not sold elsewhere, and ask what they have. As mid- to high-end graphics on laptops are relatively in the young years, a good upgrade will be costly. If you want a good one, I would say bump your range up to around $200. Otherwise, I doubt you will see a huge experience to make the buy worthwhile. Depends on your manufacturer though.

And card support means little really, unless your card does not even match the lowest end card listed.

The following you might already have set, but I'm asking to ensure. Do you have the Character Models Displayed set to the very minimum? Also, are Shadows turned off? And lastly, do you have many special effects turned off? I used to play on a laptop, albeit with a GeForce Go 6600.
