I bought a 360 today (yay!), and I have it linked up to Media Center in Vista. Now here's the deal. Some of my videos don't play because they need new codecs (Xvid/Divx). As far as I've seen, there's nothing from Microsoft for this. So does anyone know how I can install these on the 360 easily?

microsoft does not support divx or xvid, i believe only raw AVI and WMV videos, some people convert their files to be read on the 360, thats too much of a time waster.
what youll need to do is go download a program called Transcode 360 at this site
http://runtime360.com/category/blog/transcoding/

install that and run it, now when you select a video youll want to bring up the menu (i believe the button is X to bring it up) and select MORE, youll see an icon that says Transcode, click that it will say Transcoding.
Now you will be streaming your video from your PC no matter what the format as it transcodes the video in real time!

So now that I have that working, for the most part, you know how I can use my wireless controller on my PC? I hear there's a way you can do it without needing to buy MS's own receiver for the PC, but I'm not sure whether I have the equipment for it or not. I was hoping I could use my WiFi receiver, but I'm thinking I'm going to need a bluetooth one.

as far as i know there isnt a way to do it without the reciever, before the receiver there was only the USB controller for windows.
But the receiver is a steal at 20 bux, i dont plan on getting it till may when halo 2 vista comes out
if there is a way, You will be able to find it at http://www.xbox-scene.com as everything that happens with xbox usually starts here

Thanks man

I have been wondering this for awhile but didnt want to bother converting a bunch of crap. Thanks

so how is it working out Swishiee?

i've been thinking about building a media center PC and getting an xbox to extend to a second room.

but

i recently got a vista laptop and media center keeps crashing when i browse folders with DivX videos. are you having this problem?

is it saying you were disconnected in media center and asking you to reconnect or quit?
if so your problem is that you have a shared folder that has a file or files that are too big and media center is having problems reading that folder because of all the information coming through and it times out.
i have this problem with one folder of mine because its where i download all my files to. What i do is just share my desktop since it doesnt have anything on it and copy the video i wanna watch to the desktop for the time being and stream it from there, and put it back later.

i'm not using an xbox yet.

i'm still evaluating my options. i am using my vista laptop to access my entire video library on my pc, basically i'm using the laptop as i would the xbox (if i bought one).

the laptop is just straight crashing. no error message. just a "this program has stopped working" message after the fact.

yes, this is happening on a shared folder over my network, BUT it also happens when browsing a local video folder, BUT only when dealing with DivX videos.

i wonder if this is just a bug of the new media center in vista. would you know if media center 2005 is more stable?

hmm havent messed with the media center in vista, i do know it runs at least for me, i am running media center xp on a non media center pc right now, just got a cracked version since u cant buy media center xp unless u get a media center pc which is lame.
Thing with media center on xbox is that you dont have to run it on your pc at all, the 360 one runs on its own seperatley on the xbox and reads shared folders and files from your pc.
so you really wouldnt have to worry about running media center on your pc and it crashing at all, you wont even have to open it!

what worry about is the xbox media center (or whatever its called) crashing, or not working; like the media center laptop is doing now.

i am still going to build the media center pc since i want a dedicated high capacity PVR (to record TV) and media hub (divx video collection). basically a low-mid level PC with a couple of TV tuners and a lot of disks.

i would only use the 360, or some other media center extender, to take my videos to a 3rd room. i was hoping an xbox would be a in-expensive solution (as opposed to building another PC). i may just have to find someone willing to loan me their 360 for a few days to test.

i didnt know that xbox worked without media center. that is definatly a plus.

no you need media center on your pc on the network, but you dont need to run it on the PC, u ant run media center on 360 without the one on the pc being installed.

ah, ok. so it is like i originally though.

To answer your question, the transcoder works great. I've only had one problem with it so far, and that's just because one of my movies has been transcoded in a different format originally, so I get sound but no picture when on my Xbox. And the other thing is I have to pause the video when it first starts to give it some time to transcode, since my computer isn't fast enough to stream completely.

And for Vista, I've had very few problems with it. You'll hear a lot of BS from people who haven't used it saying it's shitty, but so far for me I haven't had many problems. Mainly all I've had problems with are program incompatibilities. I found out that AIM just fucks up my computer, with the newer one not working at all, and the older one randomly working, and disabling my sound and networking to where I must do a restore to fix it. AOL is too lazy to fix that. And now drivers are starting to come out that work very well (ie: Video). So I'd say Vista is a pretty good choice right now, of if not now, soon.

also so far i have had 0 problems with it besides the failure to load and disconnect problem from huge filder files.
