Ugh, I wasn't going to reply to this but I'll help you out.

Exactly what Taurothar said, quality and free don't go quite hand in hand.

There's trial versions of Adobe Premiere, Sony Vegas or Avid, but I'm not quite sure what all they'd feature as they are just trial programs. I'm quite sure there isn't a Final Cut Pro trial, if your going to be going to be Mac based. (Look into FCP/Motion/DVD StudioPro if you're really interested in editing)

Otherwise you can use free programs like Windows Movie Maker for pc or iMovie for mac that'll get simple edits down and start you off in the right direction for editing, but remember these are just basic programs.

You can also just Google 'editing software' and I'm sure you can find some shareware/free software to get your jollies off.

If you want quality. Go with Final Cut Pro. I used it, never went back. It isn't cheap though.

Wut?

This. Final cut is awesomeness in a box -- but it also kills your HD if you install all the extra programs. Also, RAM is your best friend, next to HD space.

And both are super cheap. A TERRABYTE HDD is only $175~ and you can pick up 2GB of DDR2 800MHz for $40.

I remember when I thought TB HDD would never exist.

I'm a Sony Vegas man, it's much better than even the late Adobe Premiere and easier to use. Final Cut Pro on the Mac is very good too, It use to crash a lot of the G4 when i use to use it, but it has a very user friendly interface and tool set.

I've used Adobe Premiere at school and it's really good. Pretty basic to use and easy to pick up.

Sony Vegas is a little more difficult but still a good program.
