Virtual Console: Wii-kly Update

Majora's Mask is out now on the Virtual Console for you lucky EU/AU/NZ gamers, hopefully comes to NA this Monday, but I won't hold my breath.
Been wanting to replay MM for a long while now but never got the CE disc for free and didn't feel like buying it for one game.

As previously announced, this week we get the first DSi titles. I expect them to slow to a trickle almost immediately.

WiiWare

EQUILIBRIO (DK-GAMES, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): In EQUILIBRIO, you must finish a series of levels by moving a ball toward an exit. To move the ball, hold the Wii Remote™ controller horizontally and turn it to tilt the playfield. You can also play using the Wii Balance Board™ (sold separately with Wii Fit). The ball is fragile, so don't let it fall too far, and be sure to avoid deadly obstacles such as spikes and acid pools. The difficulty of the game adjusts according to your skill. Will you be tough enough to complete all 64 levels?

Virtual Console

Nintendo DSiWare

Nintendo DSi Browser (Nintendo, 1 player, 0 Nintendo DSi Points): Get on the Web with ease using the Nintendo DSi Browser. Powered by Opera, this simple-to-use Web browser is made specifically for the Nintendo DSi system, providing a seamless and intuitive browsing experience that makes the most of the system's touch controls and two-screen interface. Check e-mail, get the latest news updates and more – wherever a wireless Internet connection is available. Just grab your stylus and start surfing.

Bird & Beans (Nintendo, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 200 Nintendo DSi Points): In Bird & Beans, you control Pyoro, a small bird with an elastic tongue and an insatiable appetite for beans. Scramble to catch beans that fall from the sky, racking up points as you go. The farther away the bean, the more points it's worth. Beware any beans that are missed – they'll leave a hole in the ground that can't be crossed, potentially trapping Pyoro. Bird & Beans also features a second version that enables Pyoro to spit seeds at high speed, bringing down more beans than ever before. This fun and fast-paced game requires skill and strategy to master, and always leaves you wanting to play just one more time.

Master of Illusion Express: Funny Face (Nintendo, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 200 Nintendo DSi Points): Master of Illusion Express titles are mind-boggling magic tricks pulled from the popular Nintendo DS™ game. Learn the illusions, practice up and amaze your friends. Master of Illusion Express: Funny Face uses your Nintendo DSi system as a prop in a card trick. Draw a face on the touch-sensitive screen and astound your audience as the face tells them which playing card they picked. Also included is the bonus Vanishing Card trick, which the Nintendo DSi system performs for your enjoyment.

Art Style: AQUIA (Nintendo, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Nintendo DSi Points): Dive into Art Style: AQUIA, a fast-paced underwater puzzle game that asks you to think fast and move even faster. Help a scuba diver reach the ocean's floor by matching three or more colored blocks horizontally or vertically. The more blocks you match, the faster the diver will descend. Fail to clear blocks and the diver's air supply will start to run out, causing darkness to creep in from above and cloud your vision. Race against time in TIMED DIVE, dive deep in FREE DIVE mode or visit the AQUARIUM to view various sea creatures. Like every game in the Art Style series, AQUIA features elegant design, polished graphics and pick-up-and-play controls, creating an experience that focuses purely on fun and engaging game play.

Take part in wacky challenges simply by moving your face and body as you travel along four wild roller coasters, hosted by Wario and his pals. Beat the mini-games using motions ranging from large to small, or play with a friend for even more fun. Wario even has a few tricks up his sleeve.

Brain Age Express: Math (Nintendo, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 800 Nintendo DSi Points): In this math-focused edition of the popular Brain Age series, players can enjoy a mix of new and familiar exercises, including Change Maker, Triangle Math, Sum Totaled and Multi Tasker. A new Themes mode includes drawing, photography and voice acting challenges, letting you share your creativity with friends and family. And if you need a break from your routine, the always-enjoyable Virus Buster makes its return.

Nintendo DSi Browser (Nintendo, 1 player, 0 Nintendo DSi Points)
A must-buy.

Concerning the DSi, I plan on getting one, just not immediately. Maybe I'll wait for my Lite's hinge to break like my DS fat.

The DSi browser can't even load QCDN, so its not so great.

In other words, it's just the DS browser that came out and cost money some time ago. At least this time it's free.

Ah, Pitfall: The Mayan Adventures. I have some nostalgia for this game, mostly because I really liked the very fluid sprite animations. I'm actually tempted to buy it, but I have a feeling I'd play a level or two and then never touch it again.

Virtual Console

Mixed Messages (Activision, 2-21 players, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Nintendo DSi Points): Mixed Messages is the hilarious party game of mixed-up miscommunication. Does anyone remember The Immortal? It was a very cool horror game. I want that to come out.

Another day, another Wonder Boy.... but we also get a tower defense game from Square Enix. I imagine there are no Beastmasters in this game.

Virtual Console

Err, re-releasing the same game on the VC, how nice..
We've already gotten Monster Lair on the TurboGrafx in 2007 for the Virtual Console, now they release the Genesis version which has worse graphics and sounds and is 100 points more because it's an import? Yeah no thanks.

Honestly Nintendo, step it up next week. Majora's Mask has been out in EU/AU for 17 days now and 13 days in Japan, plus in 6 days time it's Super Smash Bros. 10 year anniversary of NA, so they could release on the 27th to commemorate that. We won't see Majora's Mask probably until the 300th game released, which is coming up on May 18th.

FYI Crystal Defenders comes in all three flavors released on the cell phone on Live Arcade and iPhone as one package.
Not that it's any better, but might as well save your money should you feel compelled to purchase it.

Yeah, they're releasing R2 for WiiWare sometime in the future for another 800 points, so $16 total for what costs around $10 on XBLA and probably similar price when it releases on PSN,

I don't have a DSi yet, but I like the idea of the Clubhouse Games Express downloadable, although none of them are games that I play on the full collection. Put one out with Solitaire, and I'd snatch it up.

Nintendo DSiWare

Clubhouse Games Express: Card Classics (Nintendo, 1-8 players, Rated T for Teen - Simulated Gambling, 500 Nintendo DSi Points™): Clubhouse Games comes to Nintendo DSiWare with a collection of five fun card games in Clubhouse Games Express: Card Classics. Play familiar favorites like Blackjack and Five Card Draw, or test your ability in the fast-paced Last Card, Last Card Plus and President. DS Download Play allows players to host as many as seven friends.

Paper Airplane Chase™ (Nintendo, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 200 Nintendo DSi Points): In Paper Airplane Chase, glide your virtual paper plane through an increasingly tricky slalom course. Take it slow in Endless mode or zip through several Time Attack courses. The two-player Race mode allows friends to race each other using a single Nintendo DSi system.

WiiWare

Cocoto Platform Jumper (Neko Entertainment, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone - Mild Cartoon Violence, 700 Wii Points™): A long time ago in a faraway land, strange little creatures lived in the depths of Abyss. Cocoto, his little devil friends and the mysterious Fairy protect the secret of the magma — the source of their power — in a magic cauldron. Meanwhile, Zaron, the god of lightning who lusts after this force, is up to something. He can count on the rulers of the other kingdoms that Cocoto must cross. The tragic kidnapping of Shiny, Baggy and Neuro has left Cocoto alone to watch over the cauldron. Refusing to leave his friends, he will set out to find them with Fairy.

Its a shame i have this on the PS2 still.

An Animal Crossing-themed calculator app for the DSi? I actually want that. Otherwise, seems like a lackluster week. The Tower Toppler description says it's is "considered to be the most outstanding game from Hewson." Never heard of them. Is that like being the prettiest Denny's waitress?

Virtual Console

Tower Toppler (Commodore 64, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): Weird things are happening on Planet Nebulus. Someone or something has begun building huge towers on the sea floor without a construction license. Your mission is to ascend each of the eight cylindrical towers, passing various obstacles along the way, and to trigger the tower's destruction mechanism to demolish the evil threat. Praised upon its original 1987 release for its graphical innovation, this is considered to be the most outstanding game from Hewson. Don't miss out on this classic favorite.

Nintendo DSiWare

Animal Crossing Calculator (Nintendo, 1 player, 200 Nintendo DSi Points™): Need to figure out what you owe Tom Nook or the amount in your savings account? Animal Crossing Calculator features the full functionality of a traditional calculator, including a Memory key and the ability to display up to 13 digits, adding a layer of atmosphere unique to Animal Crossing. Use the Unit Converter to turn one unit of measure into another (such as length, weight, volume and age), or track the history of calculations you've performed. Listen to the Animalese pronunciation of numbers when you press them, and watch for a favorite Animal Crossing character to appear when your result meets certain criteria. Get ready for an inventive and practical way to experience the charm of Animal Crossing.

Animal Crossing Clock (Nintendo, 1 player, 200 Nintendo DSi Points): Enjoy the atmosphere of Animal Crossing in a whole new way with Animal Crossing Clock. Select from either an analog or digital clock and set up to three alarms (with snooze functionality for those who need it). Make your own Town Tune or use sounds created in Nintendo DSi™ Sound, then assign them to the alarms you've set. Use the system's internal clock or offset the time however you like. Then sit back and watch as different characters from Animal Crossing appear and the color of the sky changes as time passes. You'll never miss an important appointment with one of your Animal Crossing friends again.

WiiWare

Penguins & Friends - Hey! That's My Fish! (Gammick Entertainment, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii Points™): The penguins are hungry and need your help. Catch all the fish you can before someone steals them from you. Strategy is fundamental in this exciting game. Keep moving ahead of the other penguins so you don't get trapped, and try to get to the ice floes that hold more fish. One to four players can play Penguins & Friends at the same time, provided they can handle the polar cold. The board is made up of ice blocks with a set number of fish under them. The ice blocks are hexagonal and form a structure like a beehive. The starting position of the ice blocks can change, creating different game boards.

I have both of those apps on my TI-89. Alas, Nontondo.

Another disappointing week for me, but no surprise since NoA has no idea what they are doing with the NA Virtual Console.

2 weeks until the 300th release, unless they surprise us (yea right) and release 2 VC titles next week.

For a month now Europe and Australian Virtual Console has had Majora's Mask, nearly the same amount of time for Japanese Virtual Console, and here we are in North America, still waiting.

That and they missed the perfect time to release Smash Bros. on the VC last week, the 10 year anniversary of it's release in North America, who knows what they want to do.

So #300 better be something to make up for this past month+, which has been abysmal for me, because none of the titles they've released interest me in the slightest. That and them releasing a title that's already been on the VC since 2007 for another console and the older version being the superior version, was just a dick move.

Anyways, I'm done ranting, and now I'm hoping NoA wises up regarding a hell of a lot of things, least being the VC.

I bought the calculator app. It's just handy to have on a device I carry everywhere, and it makes the sound of Tom Nook ringing up Bells when you hit the =. I can't complain, although I'd hate of them making it a habit and releasing Metroid- or Mario- or Zelda-themed calculators every few months.
