Virtual Console: Wii-kly Update

Nintendo's been dragging their ass on updating the press page, but here's what we have this week. I think a lot of people will be very pleased:

Paper Mario - N64 - 1,000 Points
Balloon Fight - NES - 500 Points
Silent Debuggers - TurboGrafx16 - 600 Points

That's right, bitches... Balloon Fight is available! And some Mario game...

<Cartman> Oh, sweet dude! Yes! YES!!!

The hours I have spent playing Balloon Fight in the past is ridiculous. This is cool.

Some interesting choices this week. Kirby golf, anyone?

Kirby's Dream Course - Super NES - 800 Points
Devil's Crush - TurboGrafx16 - 600 Points
Shining Force - Sega Genesis - 800 Points

Has anyone here played Shining Force? I'm fond of turn-based strategy games, but I've never played this one before. Any good? I'm also jealous of the European market, because they got Metroid. It gives me hope that we might actually get Super Metroid at some point.

Now I can play Balloon fight without having to go through Animal Crossing!

Shining Force? Fuck yeah, you should pick it up, the strategy games are good, before they turned Shining Force into a hack n' slash series.

Shining Force was a great game no doubt, and I loved it, but I'd rather play the sequel. The 2nd one not only fixed a lot of the bugs/glitches from the original, story was tighter, had better character variation, and just looked so much better.

If you plan on getting the original, make sure to read a character FAQ, there's 30 characters in total I believe, and 12 (or so) of them can be missed and never gotten again, some with small time frames to unlock.

Another quick powerleveling tip, casting a healing spell or using a healing item on any character with some damage grants an auto 10XP. Since you always level at 100XP, you can basically become overpowered in a few fights, kinda removes all challenge from the game though.

I'm not really familiar with any of this week's selections:

Star Soldier - NES - 500 Points
Dynamite Headdy - Sega Genesis - 800 Points
Drop Off - TurboGrafx16 - 600 Points

I don't think I've ever heard of any of these. When's Zombies Ate My Neighbors going to be available?

I've played Dynamite Headdy before, it's a pretty good side-scroller, similar to the Rayman games for the PS1. I enjoyed it, but doesn't have any replay value, so it's really not worth the download.

I'm waiting for the Virtual Console updates to be flooded with nothing but entries from one of the crappiest platformer series of all time on SNES and Genesis.

James Pond... Damn 007-Wannabe Goldfish.

That series had a rediculous amount of corporate endorsements.

More bang for your Wii bucks...

Wave Race 64 - Nintendo 64 - 1,000 Points
Adventures of Lolo - NES - 500 Points
Galaga '90 - TurboGrafx16 - 600 Points

Prepare to power up your Charge Beams, bounty hunters. Go Nintendo is reporting a Firefox workaround (which lets people see upcoming VC games) is showing the release of Metroid and Super Metroid in the works... most likely to get people pumped for Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.

If this is true, all I can say is ABOUT FREAKIN' TIME!

Link doesn't work.

FINALLY

The Metroid release dates have been set.

Joystiq said:
Big N is giving Samus the loving treatment she deserves this month, with all of August being redubbed the "Month of Metroid." First off, there's a new Metroid Prime 3: Corruption preview channel on your Wii, where you can see some trailers for the game as well as gameplay videos. You can find that in Wii Ware, for all your promotional needs. ...

This month will also bring the long-awaited Virtual Console releases of Metroid (for 500 points) on August 13 and Super Metroid (800 points), considered by some to be the greatest game of all time, on August 20. As you've probably already guessed, this is all leading up the the reason for the season: The release of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption on August 27.

Is the Corruption preview up NOW? or is it up soon?
