Just a quick question:

Do you consider the different nations (or races) to have any particular accents, in terms of the Elvaan not just acting, but sounding French, British; the Taru having children's voices as adults, or such? If San d'Orians have a particular accent, might Tavnazians have a related one? Do the Tenshodo speak like Gilgamesh does, even though it's not always displayed in the text? And so on.

SquarE takes from a number of easily identifiable sources for their place and character names, and I'm trying to see if people intuitively "hear" that when reading dialogue, or not.

Thanks.

I was pulling your leg. I don't know about Sandy and Bastok, but i can agree with taru one. With the Warpie. And the way they talk.

Well, for me, I take a realistic approach to it on a mental level. Regardless of race, the person retains the accent of what ever area they hail from.

I.E., I believe San d'Orian Elvaans sound British. (I even think somewhere in old Vana'diel Tribune entries, there was a Tarutaru with a French accent). And when I say "British", I'm talking "Royal Family" British. Not the Australian "Cockney" accent.

However, I am generally shunned by my San d'Orian Elvaan brethren, because I'm a Bastokan Elvaan. Born and Bred.

Mentally, the way I've viewed the three nations. Bastok is pretty much "America". It had its own form of a Slavery era (If you pay attention to the Bastok storyline, Galkas are actually fighting for Civil Rights and Racial Equality to humes... who're all white, for some reason... Sounds familiar, huh?). Bastok is also heavily reliant on its Mining, and Natural Resources refining industry (*Cough*America sucking up Coal, Oil, & Gas*Cough*)... That, and it's the REPUBLIC of Bastok. We elect a president every so often. That's why I "deduce" that "People from Bastok sound like typical Americans."

As such, because I'm a Bastokan Elvaan, I've always envisioned my character talking with a "Smart-Assed American" sounding accent. Sounding similar to other Bastokans.

If Bastok's "America", then San d'Oria's probably Europe or Great Britain. Ruled by a Monarchy / Royal Family--Therefore, making it a Kingdom--and heavy into traditional standards and practices. Years of tried-and-true ceremonies and regal processions and all that stuff. So I expect most San d'Orians to have English accents.

I've always imagined Windurst as a combination of South America (Brazil, Chile, etc.), Northern Africa & South-Eastern Asia. I've imagined Windurstians--or rather, Windurstian Mithras--having slight "Latina" sounding accents (sounds silly, huh?)... Rolling their "R"s and whatnot. That, and they're Tan / Brown-skinned. Tasty, caramel flesh--- *drool* ... Err... Uh.

Kazham would probably be Madagascar or the Philippines. (That's how I mentally imagine it).

Naturally, everyone in Aht Urghan sounds Middle-Eastern, I would imagine.

Jeuno doesn't count for accents, really. Because everyone from all Nations goes there at some point.

If anything, though. I'd think Tavnazians would sound like both San d'Orians and Bastokans. Because its in such a close proximity to the "Quon" continent (Bastok / San d'Oria).

Taru are weird. There doesn't seem to be a single rule for how they speak except that they all have a random "cute sounding" speech impediment. There is one however that actually does possess a French accent.

I always saw Sandy as French. I mean Bostaunieux Oubliette and the Royal Family's surname being d'Oraguille. That and most Elvaan NPC's have French sounding names. For some reason the rolling r's of the Mithra remind me of Russian/Eastern Europeans. Bastok i've always thought of as Germany and Taru's are just one in their own.

Isn't the french Taru the one who is by the Rhinostery?

And if you watch the opening movie of FFXI you can hear some voices. Humes=NA Tarus have cute voices even when starring down a giant Behemoth, Galka have a lot weaker sounding voices expected and Mithra have I forget. And you never head from the Elvaan

The only instance of voice-over is in the intro video. If you notice, the scared-shitless tarutaru scream out "BEHEMOTH!!" in a tinny childlike voice before kicking the shit out of it with their conjured Meteors.

edit: i suck, Humes, Mithra, and Galka also have a scare voice-over in the video too.

Humes sound, strangely enough, like normal humans.

Mithra had a high-ish pitched voice.

Galka, of course, had a deep booming warcry.

I hear voices....

But no really...I always imagine someone's voice...whether they are npc or another pc. The odd thing is...if i know the person..their voice may sound different than other's of their "race". For example my dear friend Mielle (cellar) (yes please) though an elvaan female has a strong australian accent. My other ls mate Elliot/Lukas though who is also australian sounds like other tarutaru. hmmm. What's really weird are the males playing female charcters..because I hear a male voice when they speak.

They really need to possibly add voice over in CSs, I don't feel that a steam of 2 minute audio would seriously lag the game for that player in the CS. But owell.

There's also a french accent (and occasional french speaking) taru inside the cooking guild.

imo:
Sandy is not british because I dont hear any slang usage, they sound sound more like old old america and old old Great britan around the 14 or 15 hundreds

winderst is like rhyming 4 yr olds with attitudes, I commonly thing of the youngest daughter from the brady buntch.

bastok is where people all americanized similar to police officers. and all the Galkas sound like Vulcans from star trek

Galka came from the desert, though, could they have an Arabresque accent? Maybe Afrikaansk? Or arguably an Egyptian one?
And how would that intermingle with the Hume accent? As a matter of fact, what is the Hume accent? Let's see. Humes were a mountain people at first, historically mountain people develop a slightly more guttural version, since the repeated consonants carry better. My guess would be German, Swiss, or something.

Sandoria does sound a bit frenchy, San'Doria and d'Oraguile, so yeah, I'll agree with that one. The castle and ruling monarchy/theocracy also kinda hints that way.

Where are TaruTaru originally from, I know they migrated to Windurst, but where are they *originally* from?
Same goes for the Mithra. The Mithra are from Khazam, remember? Thus a jungle language-style? Maybe Kisuaheli?

The trick is to look at the original place the people are from, since almost every nation is now removed from their ancestral grounds.
