Should the ratings system be returned?

Honestly, I used the ratings system as a kind of comment type thing that I felt was too short for a PM and too obnoxious for a "good post!" post. If we could have something like that without the rating part, that'd be all sorts of badass.

i would actually be very happy with that as well if we could get the comments part without the green dots it would be awesome.

Could also cut out alot of PC+1, thats not a bad idea. Though i did not mind the rate system, but thought it was silly when ppl took it serious

Makes sense. Then again, you could just write on the persons wall, unless you (for some reason) want it to be completely anon except for the recipient.

We had that, it was the thank you system, which was annoying because you'd see all of the thank you's under the post.

The Rep system was good, but a few people misused it; but I'd like it to return. I'd say just ban them or moderate it, and maybe don't make it so that someone with 100000 rep points can instantly level one person up. Hell, you could just only have a rate-up/down system, with no comment option. Then, people would still be able to flag their opinions on certain posts, but without using ratings as a tool to flame someone. 90% of my rate ups(and I had a lot) were because of the content of my posts, the remaining 10% were because of the jokes in said posts. I had only received maybe a handful of meaningless rate-ups; and I don't buy that it was so rampant that everyone was rating everyone else up, otherwise there would have been a lot more people with rep like mine was.

I remember in the thread asking it to disappear(there was a poll there too), the only people who wanted it gone were people with little/no or negative rep's. Then the poll said keep it, but the mods took it away anyways.

TBH you know what I would like to see? A rate-up/rate-down system per POST rather than per USER. Something like a simple thumbs-up/thumbs-down icon on every post that you can click if you agree/disagree with the post. Enough rate-downs and the post is hidden as if the user is on your blacklist. Enough rate-ups and... well, I dunno. Maybe the post is somehow highlighted.

I guess basically like the "Thank You" system without the annoying list of names after the post and with some kind of negative side as well.

I actually love this idea ^

With hidden post idea, are you thinking hidden to a member who rated it down? Because if I hadn't rated or seen it yet I would still like the opportunity to. Overall, really solid idea.

That's an old version but I'm sure there are updates. That's just the best example my google-fu could turn up quickly.

Basically if a post gets a few negative ratings (ie more negative score than positive score), it's replaced in the topic but there's a link you can click to make it visible. Think youtube/slashdot/etc.

I mentioned something similar to this a while back after it was brought up the first time (bringing it back, I think around the upgrade to 3.8 or the server move). I like that idea save the negative "hiding post" thing, because there would be a massive amount of misuse of it.

Maybe if you rate a post down, it hides it from *your* view, possibly.

> If your site is large, and someone posts a porn image, many users may see it before a mod gets around to removing it. With a system like this, once it has got a bit of negrep, it will get auto-hidden for the vast majority of posters. This is a big help when dealing with spamming/trolling attacks, and immature users.

> Encouraging your members to participate in the moderation of the site both lifts some of the burden from you and your mod team, and also encourages them to become more active on and involved with the site.

Good angles too. Like Airou said about cutting back on the number of PC+1's, this could be pretty helpful.

Not really a "thanks" system, because it wouldn't show "# users have thanked this person". It'd basically be the rep system without the dots.
Yeah, I guess the user profile would work, but some people lock out profile comments.

Miros, Sneaky, and Makelith would be better equipped to reply to this part.

There isn't much of a burden as it stands, and there's already a feature built in to self-police:

Again, I outright doubt it. The thanks system and reputation system didn't reduce PC+1 previously, it achieved the opposite effect.

Bringing this back is like bringing back "skinny" jeans. Looks good on gangly emo fuckers and that's about it. On second thought, bad example since that would actually work here. Point being...Why bother now? It's really pretty lame.

Trist - the report function works great when staff are around and get to it.

However, I do think having a post hidden by way of negative response should only apply to those that gave it a rate-down. Which is a contradiction to my last comment. Being an idealist blows.

Sneaky - Skinny jeans is a terrible example! No matter who wears them they look hideous and skinny people look like they have chicken legs.

Why? - Because instead of seeing 'If there was a rate up system I would..' or 'that's the stupidest shit I've read', but not adding to it.

There are PC+1's strictly for giving someone props on posts..see above examples.

That's pretty much what I meant here. Giving someone a rep up with a comment or a rep down with a comment is great, in theory. Just need to actually give constructive criticism or a well deserved "thank you" or "I liked your post because...". Not random comments that do not pertain to the post in any way.

One of the reasons I would personally want it back is to see those comments. I liked seeing the comments half the time.

Isn't it easy enough just to report someone who uses the rep function to be an ass to other people? I mean wouldn't that fall under harassment.

Yeah, it definitely would. I'd rather have it so a PM is sent and admins/vbeditors (:p) could look up the rep comment in the back and decide from there.

Technically yes, but then the same people who'd be called out on the dick move would totally burn them by saying something like "Call the waaaaaaaaaambulance" or some bullshit like that.

Harassment! Kinda. The way I see it is we could bring it back, make a new usergroup that doesn't allow rep usage and move them into that group permanently.

It's simple enough to do that. All we'd need to do is change the images to a blank one so that the images don't show. That or we could make it so that you need like...6,000,000 rep points to move up a point and just change the green dots to moogles cause they are cute.

I thought it did. But that's just me!

I think I may poke around on vb.org today and see what I can find. I may toss something up tonight just for the hell of it.

Don't really have to worry about bots with the addons and the way current posting is done. If someone else posts a porn image its usually gets taken care of pretty quickly and something like the rep system isn't going to get added in because of the off chance that myself and all other mods miss a post.

As far as elimination of PC+1's it had the opposite effect by quite a bit.

Man, that thanks system. What a terrible idea that was looking back.

Does this mean I can't have fun and put something new in tonight? :(

Simple solution to that is making ratings public to all or at the bare minimum the user whose post is rated. From there it's as simple as watching who rates you and seeing if someone just "karmabombs" you for no apparent reason.

whats to stop someones posse from mass rating your post down. case in point, jayk... he might have a good post now and then but he will just be mass rated down.

I'd rate you up for that if I could... ZING!!

Anyway, the problem with rate up's/down's and thumbs up's/down's is that, if a group of people have a dislike for someone, they will just band together, same thing with the positive. You'll always have immature people who will take advantage of it. I don't think anyones posts should be disregarded per se, MOD's do their job and it gets deleted. Comments would be nice, but like I said before, why can you not just leave the person a small message on their personal page (not a PM)? If not, then a page that is made up of comments that only the individual gets to see would probably be in best interest.
