Well, they couldn't exactly stretch it too much, or the one holding it steady would have fallen over. That would have happened well before the band could stretch so that it would have enough tension to launch well.

They should have made a giant post, dug deep in to the ground and reinforced with concrete so that they could have stretched it enough.
