I was wondering a thing about war weapon suggestions. Would Maneater/Joyeuse be a good choice, or should I just go with axe/axe instead?
Or should I main hand another axe?

Im not a WAR, but I would think Maneater + Woodvilles would be one of the best choices.

But if not that, Main Hand Woodvilles Axe, and offhand a Joyeuse for TP gain.

If you have a joyeuse and no axe merits go ahead and offhand it with maneater main until you get more axe merits or a juggernaut.

Ive got axe merits, but would Joyeuse be a good choice at all or would it just gimp me. <With capped sword merits>

It all depends on where you level.

For places with high evasion or defence mobs, I suggest using axe/axe. Main hand Woodville's and offhand maneater if those are the two you are using.

For places like Caedarva Mire and Bhaflau Thickets, you can get away with offhanding joyeuse, and still hit between 80-90% of the time.

Edit:: People say that you NEED Suppo + capped sword merits to be able to offhand joyeuse properly, though that is true I don't have either and still offhand it and it does quite well for me

Yeah sounds good, Joyeuse is "free" anyways so I can always have it with me when I want to gain some extra tp against easier mobs.

If you don't have one already and you don't want it for another job then don't bother camping it. Just grab a woodvilles, mainhand it, and offhand maneater.

i know no one would go this route (besides me) but I actually use woodville in main hand and Company Sword in sub hand. With my Suppanomimi and Sword merits (7) my 1h axe and sword skill are both 279. With the hidden effect of company sword in parties, it hits harder than my woodville's axe... base 56 dmg 264 delay vs. base 50 dmg 288 delay. It's just a cost effective alternative to maneater if you don't wanna get one.

Maneater = 1M+
Company Sword = 20k

If vorpal blade was a 5-hit WS like rampage... Company Sword would be in my main hand.

Why not swap Woodville's for a Meater? You're only losing 1 base dmg at the gain of so much.

For the record I offhand Company Sword as well, if I had a Joytoy I'd be leery of using it. Base damage was always the first thing I looked at in upgrading weapons along my war career, then stats second. In this case the stats of Meater are (in my opinion, at least) worth the loss in base from Woody.

lately ive been toying around with sword offhand. I haven't even capped my sword skill out yet still 5 lvls under cap and i don't have a suppa earring. the Dps on Seiryu's Sword is rather nice and im pushing around +53 acc without food and i use sole sushi and have no prob keeping my damage up. i still love my wood/man setup but its fun swinging my imitation ridill. pretty much as long as you have the gear you can offhand almost any weapon and still do damage. Will it be as much as an axe/axe combo.. NO but.. to each his own axe/axe does get boring after i bit. i myself switch between axe/sword axe/axe and Gaxe through out a party nowadays just to have a little fun

Since I didn't see it mentioned... Jamal did a Axe/Axe vs Axe/Joy comparison, Axe/Axe won. And he's completely set up for sword usage as a Ridill WAR.

Of course, that is working with the best gear available, but experience tells me that less-than-the-best gear only makes that kind of gap larger. Only use Joy until you can afford a proper axe (Wood, Man, Jugger). And as a couple have said, Company Sword is a nice offhand if you can't afford said proper axe when you have sword merits.

If it isn't 2-handed, I'm a cheapskate. I loves my Company!

Great... After I thought I was done skilling up my weapons for a good while, I now gotta get sword to 250+, hahah...

Im not much for going on information without knowing myself, but just for the hell of it I will this time lol.

ffxicyclopedia.com lists Maneater as having hidden effect: Acc+5, Att+18 (while latent is active, or during WS) Looking at that is kinda nifty.

well it seems you'd get the maneater for the hidden atk+18 because the 5 acc is sorta useless if you eat sushi.

yeah... if you as a war wanna use a Joy Toy... PLEASE... PLEASE... have sword merits. It's not really worth it if you leave sword as a B grade in skill. Axe/JoyToy may not parse as good as axe/axe but it still is viable. Just make it an effective weapon combo by having sword merits. Just FYI.. if you leave you don't plan on getting sword merits... then you have a better chance hitting whatever mob you're fighting with a Scythe or Great Sword than you do with a sword. Just something to think about =)

it only takes 7 merits + Suppanomimi to make your sword skill on par with your 1h axe (269)
You have 5 combat merits to do whatever you want with.. put them into your 1h axe i guess (279)

If you don't have the Suppa and cap sword merits ( 8 )... your sword skill is not that bad (266)
Then with the leftover merits you can put them into 1h axe if war is your MAIN main job ((277)

if you go axe/axe then you cap your 1h axe merits then.. (285)
and if you decide to inviest in sword merits if you wanted to try axe/sword, go ahead then (258... 263 with Suppa)

But i like the top option better...for axe/sword... seems more 'all-around' if you have no intention of going axe/sword.. the last option is for you. But that means you have some priority for delay because more than likely you'll get a suppanomimi... if you wanna go all out... then get a beastly earring for the +5 axe skill.. cap your 1h axe merits, and you'll be at a whopping 290 axe skill with only dual wield II >.>

Bang-on. Long as you're not saving TP past 100 for too long, Meater is generally better than Woody.

If he's offhanding sword, the acc+5 can't hurt.

Ya, I would rather go DRK/WAR my entire time, but the entire FFXI community calls for me to be more flexible, so I am trying to get everything ready so I can be prepared for anything.

Leveled Scythe as my base weapon, then I had to level GS once people started taking DRK/THF as cookie cutter job (even if drk/war outdamages). After I hit 70, people have started asking me to come PT as DRK/NIN (even pre Ni) and I couldnt meet these requirements, so I lose PT T-T Currently leveling NIN to 37, at 30. One hell of a fun job, I will admit. But anyway, after 70, I began to level axe, and Im done with it. Luckily, though, I leveled sword a good amount already on war (when I first joined Quetz)
