I was told by my cousin to look into warcraft 3, because of its "awesomeness."

I missed out on every warcraft past the first released, but am feeling kind of itchy to play it again. One of the reasons is this thing called DotA. (Have no idea what this is lol)

Can anyone shed some light on this? And will I need to have the previous 2 games in order to have WC3?

The first two Warcrafts sucked penis. You should be good with WC3 and Frozen Throne.

The only reason why I would play the first two is because of the stories. but you can read the lore on websites

Pfftt.. you just say they sucked cause of the old graphics :P but they were fun games and their stories were fine. But you can get an idea of what happened in the first two from Warcraft III soo just get War III.

I dunno i thought 2 was good stuff for it's time. Still an enjoyable game to play but i wouldn't go farther back than that for something to play through these days.

Truth be told WC3 was full of awesome. I just recently played through it again and am currently about to install and play through frozen throne for the first time. WC3 sold me on WoW, tbqh. I'dve been real lost playing WoW had i not at least played the last 2 WCs and/or done some lore reading via paperback and on the web. People who claim it has no storyline are braindead.

I had fun playing it online. I don't want to get into a ZOMG HEROES ARE BROKEN discussion, but having a a blademaster activate whirlwind and turn into a slaughetring fuckface and raping your opponents army is awesome.

lol, Does anyone know anything about this DotA? My cousin told me it was like playing Diablo, but in Warcraft... In a sense. You have 1 hero, you constantly are leveling it, and then you go try and destroy the opponents... something. Idk.

It stands for Defense of the Ancients, it's basically a hero based type-of-game for WCIII.

Basically Dota is a skirmish team based game against another team to over run their base. You pick one hero at start and basically kill creeps and your opponents to level up, get some gear, and finally overrun them. Most matches last 20 minutes or so, depending on the settings and how good/bad your team is.

This isn't like Diablo or other RPG maps where you can save your hero though, and I would also suggest you practice a few times solo to get the hang of the game and which hero you feel comfortable with.

I play DOTA from time to time. Pretty much what Pupusa said, except the matches I've been in always last atleast 45min-1hr, depends what realm you play on, and who you're with I guess.

If you want to start playing it, I'd advise playing against computers so you get the hang of it before heading to Battle.net, for the BN can be unforgiving to noobs.

Tides of Blood > DoTA any day. ToB requires actual team work not just who can be the overpowered hero and get the most overpowered armor/weapons first :P even if you have the best you still can get pwned if you suck XD (though some heroes have some unbalance to them like.. Maiden for one). But over all far more enjoyable I say. Shame 90% of the War III community are fools that lack the idea of team play (and most usually leave as soon as they die.. I hate noobs)

And ya, people that say WoW has no story are people that have never played WoW or any other games in the story. There's story, they just don't deviate between quest and mission like FFXI did. Some quests are story-related and others are like side quests but all are called quests :P

My biggest beef with single player and non-custom multiplayer WC3 is the food limit. You don't get the nice sized battles that you could get from StarCraft and WarCraft 2. Hell, even Diablo I/II had larger battles if you're playing 1 on 1.

Theres a reason though, 6 v 6 centered in one spot can be pretty heavy hitting to machines(and internet connections) with large armies.

Remember when War III came out too :P it was like.. 4-5 years ago O.o I forget exactly, but it was quite awhile back. As you stated, not good for machines, but was still fun :P

Yeah, I just can't stand the food limit. Never could. I enjoyed huge battles from WC2 and SC. Realizing how limited armies can be in WC3 just hurt it imo. Sure, there was a reason at the time. But it just felt like a different franchise. Like SkirmishCraft. Or GangWarCraft.

I can understand what you mean :P it was a bit interesting. Rather than relying so much on "ZOMG MASS LINGS GOO!!!" or the sort it was a "who has the better unit ratio" :P and who can control the spells better.

Yeah I agree with skaw. That was one of my biggest drawbacks on that game was the food limit and how you get less money for more units. Plus to me the gameplay seems slower. Money comes in slower and rather than training like 6 or more units at a time you can only train 2 or 3 before having money issues. Feels like it would take forever to build a nice size army. I'm sure they did that purposily for a different gameplay style but I personally enjoyed the fast paced, mass army style that starcraft offered better.

The less money for more units makes sense though :P it added a bit more strategy to the game. I love keeping under 50 food and doing gorilla tactics to my enemy when I can. It's fun and it weakens them slowly while I continue getting money, upgrading, building units, FUN!!!

I found starcraft fun but building one unit type and just massing them up gets dull :P added more replay-ability to have units that worked better together than just massing the same unit. Granted it'd have been more fun to have larger battles but.. meh...

I installed it (WC3) two days ago now, and I jus' completed the Orc line a moment ago, damn, that end battle was intense.

Gonna do the Nelf line earlier tonight.

It's helping me understand ALOT more about WoW too. The lore is fuckin' EPIC.

I did finally install it a few days ago too, and Im currently on the Orc Campaign as well.

I gotta say, the Scourge Campaign was annoying as hell, but it was pretty satisfying. Throughout the entire campaign all I did was create a couple spiders (crypt somethin?) and then create 6 ghouls, and just had several little groups like this, and I sent all of them wherever, at one time. Scourge reminds me of Zerg from SC, lol.
