This is because it is hemorhaging members much like AoC (though at a slower rate) and is ultimately probably a flop in its current state. I'd imagine Mythic will probably throw out some new classes soon and call it something flashy to try to retain players who are easily swayed by that sorta thing. Hopefully that buys them time to revamp their end game completely and make RvR worthwhile/fun.

Am I close??? :P

lol XD

Their last announcement has caused a huge number of people to cancel their subs. New stuff they talked about are:

Slayer & Choppa release
New Tomb Kings area with RvR dungeons

Notice how they didn't say anything about the buggy end game or class balance...? I guess so many people canceled, Mythic freaked out and released more information the next day. Apparently, the class balancing patch is going to be released on the test servers sometime this week and put into the other servers asap. It's like 16 pages of patch notes, it's insane.

We'll see what happens. As a causal end game player, I am still enjoying this game. Again, we'll juts see what happens. :)

Blizzard should regularly send them letters quoting all the bullshit claims they were making about competing with them.

This is why I never hold my hopes high for something billed as a "WoW-killer".

Odd, considering that every thing I ever heard from them quoted them as saying that they had no real hope of dethroning WoW, but would like very much to become the #2 game.

It's functionally impossible to dislodge WoW anyway. The game survives largely on sheer momentum; any game that would attempt to dethrone it would have to be absolutely perfect on the day of release, which is rather unreasonable to expect under the best circumstances.

Think about it this way:

WoW has 11.5+ million players.

AoC, which carried the "WoW killer" mentality for awhile, had ~400,000 players at its peak. I thought I remembered hearing Warhammer was somewhere in the 700,000 range at one point.

If all 1,100,000 of AoC and WAR players came DIRECTLY FROM WoW (they did not), Warcraft would still have over 10,000,000 people playing it. Ten MILLION people. That's a lot of $15/month in subscriptions.

The only thing that kills a game with that kind of momentum is a cataclysmic volcano eruption directly beneath every single one of their servers. Suggesting that any of these new games is going to "kill WoW" is just fucking retarded at this point. This coming from a guy who does not like WoW (crazy, I know).

Blizzard knows they are sitting pretty. They are too busy rolling around in more money than you and I could possibly even fathom to be sending out letters to anybody.

lol i wasnt trying to spark a fight, just trying to see if this game was still goin? It had good game play, but it had nothing else other than PVP :(

How many players does FFXI have? I honestly have not a clue.

And Sony Online Entertainment/NCsoft knew they were sitting pretty, in their respective markets. WoW'll be dethroned the same way EverQuest and Lineage were by WoW: Take all the existing MMO RPG mechanics that are considered awesome but aren't in one package, and do just that.

It isn't like WoW is flawless, or contains all the best mechanics. It's simply the most solid product around for now. You'll still have the die hard fans that'll stick around until the game is completely dead. The goal isn't to recruit them. It's to recruit the players that typically float around game to game and only play what the current best experience is, and recruit people new to the MMO experience.

The reason why nothing has been a considerable threat to WoW is because everyones trying to emulate it, hoping to meet some sort of success no matter how minor, rather than take the risk to develop new ideas.

If WAR wasn't seemingly ignored by Mythic post release, it would have fared much better. 11 million subscribers better? Probably not, since a large majority of WoW players aren't keen on open PvP, which was WAR was banking on. But it would've definitely kept their surge of initial subscribers, and likely gain more.

I wouldn't say Mythic ignored WAR post-release, I'd say that Mythic rushed WAR out the door in an attempt to grab subscribers before WotLK cemented a whole bunch of them back into WoW.

Which, all in all, was a horrid fucking mistake. The current generation has little patience for the growing pains of an MMO, as pretty much every MMO release since WoW has proven. WoW has spoiled people, they're used to joining up to their MMO and having it relatively bug-free, but tend to forget that WoW's polish is a result of years of work, and that the game was buggy as hell on release. They tend to forget because they weren't there, and just assume that the game was always perfect.

Well there is no denying end game needs fixing. Its not per say broke but lack of meat to the bone they gave us at end game. The last patch this week has put in a domination zone flipping into affect from what I have read. I have been on game vacation for over a week and missed out on the city defense. Finally we can see some city dungeons from the opposing side...at the same time the RVR action is still very strong on my server.

I can gladly say the Alliance I am a part of is making an impact on the server. And thanks to several other alliances joining ours in our attempts to organize server wide multi alliance organized war.. we are going to see some huge wars. our goals are to take the city AND crash the server if we can ;)

I dont know the state of other servers. I do know Phoenix Throne is alive and kicking. The game does need a Second wind of new blood. Its not that its losing any more players than any other successful mmorpg.. The retention seems to be good. The PC Gamer this month nailed on the head that they need to start that free trial to bring new blood to lower tiers. And they finally are getting on that.

I wish you wouldn't lump it in with AOC. I was part of AOC from beta to crash of the game. Warhammer is nowhere near the state of that games mismanaged bafoonery ... AOC deserves to crash into history as a forgotten crap mmo. Not because it lacked potential..it had great potential...It lacked endgame that worked and fixes ...it was NOT ready at all. And this is the price they pay for it. Watching 30+ active members go down to 5 in one patch was crippling to incentive and desires to play that game. But this is another topic sorry for going on and on...but it is hardly something to Compare War with.

You assume its going to flop and sure can believe that if you like. I am not here to debate you or belittle your viewpoint. But I would like to convince you that you "might" be wrong. heck honestly I know you are wrong.

Now it is true we are getting Slayers and Choppers...classes they took out in Beta and now are returning. This has amped up peoples desires to roll alts..and hopefully they put out a free trial more openly at the time and advertise so the elders and matured fans can assist and help new people from the first day on... Just like PC launch for FFXI ...that made a great impression on my LS when we kept meeting high levels offering help on the start of our FFXI adventures...and MMO's core is community.. strong community retains people...its not the only part of retention formula but plays a big part.

Well anyway. if you are playing or are going to trial play... Do not go to the servers they recommend.. Dive right into med to full servers to get the most out of your trials.

if you want I am on Phoenix Throne RP server.. Destruction Faction... send me a ingame tell or mail and I will come out and assist you or play an alt. Or sit on my Zealot and heal you =)

I played on probably the most active and balanced server at the time (Volkmar). I took part in the first city sieges worldwide (fighting for order) with probably one of the better organized guilds in the entire game (at the time). I saw a lot of what you are seeing now, but way back before anyone knew what to expect. My post isn't mere speculation as you seem to suggest but more a reflection of my experience with the game.

Playing Warhammer was like taking a new girl to bed. At first you think- "omg this is awesome, it's new, it's hot and it just feels so right". You're going to do it again and again and again. You tell all your friends about it and get them interested and hey- some of them may even take her for a spin to find out for themselves. This has to be what you were looking for...

But the more time you spend with her the more you realize that it is a shallow, dull experience with not all that much variation in what it has to offer. You continue to hang in there despite her increasingly visible flaws and the emergance of that empty feeling of wanting more. You don't even care that she is suckling money from you every month and dipping into your social life time until finally ...she tells you that the boob job that she was supposedly saving for turned out to be a sex change she got 6 weeks ago and that little tickle at your back door during sex wasn't her finger.

Deception. Not only have you invested all your time and money in this particular woman, but you are probably now fairly untrusting when it comes to new women in general.

Thus is how I felt when Warhammer let me down. All the hype of the next big MMO experience and how excited Paul sounded when rattling off the class descriptions. The unique combat mechanics, the epic city sieges...none of that was anywhere near as exciting as it had been painted to be. I can tell you I didn't even bother paying any attention to Darkfall after WAR and AoC sucked so hard.

I assume WAR is going to continue to struggle along because, much like AoC, the gameplay is shallow and boring. People who play MMOs for more than just button mashing and mindless, meaningless achievements will probably agree with me. For others, this is the kinda game they enjoy unwinding with- which is great for them. I just don't see it ever being the "MMO achiever's dream" like it was advertised to be.

lol @ the introduction of new classes as a means of inducing enough hype to keep the game chugging along though.

edit: Not knocking your opinion of the game btw, I'm glad you enjoy it. Simply stating here that many (most?) will not share that same enthusiasm for Warhammer.

Hah I love your reply. So far the best counter reply I've had in a long time on subjects I am up on vs behind On (ffxi) ahem.. =)

yah your view of it with that analogy is pretty much on mark. That is surely the negative side to this game.

New players will not suffer this since they will hit 40 and be ready for Tomb ...old players like me since Elder Beta... well we are burning through stuff so fast that we are left feeling hungry but no foods on the table for us. Just the promise of a meal coming soon as they toss us scraps.

I think Tomb expansion will be the crossroad in this games growth and future. The negative view is it may be a temp satisfaction and we will be back to being hungry again ... on the positive side it adds much more to the end game so we are revitalized again to playing our butts off..and new blood joining the
game to increase its longevity.

I hope its going to be a good expansion, But im prepared to face the fact I may have to just stop playing MMO's for a while.

Fundamentally, that's the problem with all MMOs once you hit endgame and the grind sets in. Or in some cases, long before you hit endgame and the grind sets in. Oddly enough though, my experience in FFXI was a ton of fun, even towards the end, but I simply could not put in the required number of hours to operate successfully in it anymore. I could pop in, play for an hour, and really not accomplish all that much. Even if I could find a merit party in the time I'd have available to me, I'd feel bad about leaving it early. Most endgame was sliding out of my schedule, since even the quick parts take quite a while to complete, most times, and as for HNMs, forget about it.

The flip side, for me at least, is that looking at what SE has done in the past couple years with FFXI gives me an awful lot of hope for their next project, since it's obvious they've learned an incredible amount about how to offer content to more than just the hardcore gamers who can spend 4-5 hours a night playing.

Which, incidentally, is one of the reasons I jumped to WAR in the first place. The game, ideally at least, has a lot of things to do that don't require much time to complete, and yet you feel as though you've both accomplished something, and (importantly for me) not wasted other people's time. The down side of WAR has been that they released the game about 6 months too early, in all honesty. 1.2 should have been their release version, hands down. I suspect they were under a great deal of pressure to beat WotLK to release, and as a result, they simply rushed too much. They released a relatively finished product, largely stable and with few bugs (again, relatively speaking), but they simply didn't have enough to do once you got to the end of the leveling process. Grinding renown gets dull, the PVE content is designed for small groups to defeat relatively easily with practice (since it's really just intended to streamline RVR), and things like city sieges, as existing prior to 1.2, were simply incomplete. Now they're ridiculously hard, and slightly buggy, but at least the content flows smoothly and isn't one side getting stuck at the first PQ because progression is nearly impossible.

I'd originally hoped WAR would be my new diversion for the next couple years: as it stands currently, it's my new diversion until Rapture comes out, at which point I'll make my final decision on it based on how good Rapture looks vs how polished WAR has become.

Wait Warhammer isn't even a year old, and they're already putting out an expansion for it?
