What did you like about Pokemon Red/Blue?

When I was stationed down in TX, I picked up the DS pokemon.

I had no idea what any of the new things were in it. So my line up was all stuff that I thought was cute. Then I would get flustered when they evolved and no longer looked cute. They got the boot... like the cute beaver thing and the sheep one. :( such potential.....
