No, this is not a ghost.
I've been hibernating in Azeroth for many years but have grown mostly tired of it (again).

So hi!

I want to know what happened to FFXI and these forums? Seems like activity fell off around 2010/2011 in a sharp way. I re-activated my FFXI account (mostly to just see if I could), and the game seems eerily quiet.

Did most people I remember just stop playing, did they move on to FFXIV?
I remember getting beta access to FFXIV years ago and thought it was absolute crap... then I heard they re-released it so I figured I can either get FFXI Ultimate Collection and finally finish my relic weapon (the only thing I felt I left incomplete in that game) or try FFXIV.

How friendly is it to a lone-wolf/mercenary-for-hire type player like myself?
What realms are most people on/where to get the best experience?
Does the game feel populated enough or are many places ghost towns?
Is cheating an issue?
Does the PC version just feel like a console port like FFXI did in many ways?
Are the servers separated by language?

If I do choose the FFXIV route, maybe I will convince Mirewen to come along =)

How friendly is it to a lone-wolf/mercenary-for-hire type player like myself? No. It's even more group oriented than FFXI was. It's much more WoW like.

What realms are most people on/where to get the best experience? Gilgamesh.

Does the game feel populated enough or are many places ghost towns? If you're on an active server like Gilgamesh/Behemoth/Sargatanas the server will feel lively. Some of the servers created in a panic at launch are ghost towns.

Is cheating an issue? No. Not really.

Does the PC version just feel like a console port like FFXI did in many ways? Technically, the console version of FFXI was a port. FFXIV was designed for PC play initially, and it plays well on PS4 too.

Are the servers separated by language? No? I don't fully understand the question. There are EU, JP and NA servers. EU and NA servers are in the same location (Montreal, QC, Canada) for now.

In regards to what happened to the forums, with 1.0 FFXIV launch I think not selecting a dedicated server kind of killed interest in the forums and on top of most people quitting FFXI well the forums aren't needed.

Edit: There is a 14 day trial for FFXIV. Check it out.
