I was in the worst party of my FF XI carreer (playing since April). It all started in the Dunes...surprise surprise

I got the invite expecting to hit 14 with my drk/war. I saw that 4 members were by La Thiene, and 1 was in dunes. The person in the dunes was a hardcore noob, he had no map, and had no idea where to go, i think it was his first time there. He imediately asked me to come and get him before meeting with the party, so i told him to go North from the tunnel. SURPRISE! a gob killed him and his HP was in windy or something, so i took the time to get him a raise, then dragged him to selbina to set HP. Someone left so the remainder of the party was

drk/war - me
Rng/? - leader
mnk/war
whm/noob
thf/war

so the whm and i met up with the party, and i saw a sam/war seeking so i asked if he wanted to join and he said yes, and the rest of the conversation went something like this...

me - invite (sam name here) he said he would join
leader - tell him we need a real tank
me - ummm..... mnk/war = tank
leader - mnk/war = dead tank
mnk/war - i agree
mnk/war - my def is (i dont remember)

here is when i looked at the mnk/war equpment, and at level 11 he had a tunic on...

me - your tunic doesnt help
mnk/war - it is the best available (ive never seen a mnk with a tunic on)

After arguing about tanks for 30-45 minutes, and the leader talking about noobs (even though his whm was a harcore noob) he invited a pld and started to say how they are the best tanks (obviously), but at this point i had waited and hour and a half and got 0 xp, and i had to go to bed because i had to get up in 6 hours for work, so i told them i had to leave.

the leader then /emote gives me the finger, so i came back and put him in his place, and he had nothing to say after that, so.....

My question is, Am I wrong for thinking Mnk/War is a good tank (at least at lower levels)? I have never played as monk, but they have high HP, and Vit (i think), yes their armor may not be as good but i still see them tank often, and do a good job at it. So please inform me if i am wrong, or back me up if i am right, i am looking forward to seeing results

Mnk/Anything but Ninja

Make terrible tanks. Being a WHM if I had a MNK as main tank I'd be emptying out my entire mana pool every fight trying to keep him alive. They have terrible defence. Unless they have Utsu Ichi they're useless as tanks....

MNK/WAR(with full sub of course) make pretty good tanks in the early levels, i think, as NIN/WAR(with no utsusemi) i tanked really well, and my evasion was crap, same goes for AGI, but i still did real well, and held hate well too, but i also have lower HP, and lower VIT, so i assume that MNK/WAR are pretty good tanks early on

While not ideal, MNK can tank in the Dunes and maybe even Qufim if there are no other alternatives. A WAR or PLD is obviously preferable, due to their higher defense, of course.

And the Royal Footman's Tunic is actually a pretty good piece for low-level MNKs, speaking of Tunics. It's a low-level conquest item (free stuff!), it's got decent defense and an AGI+1 bonus, handy for MNKs. Not only that...MNKs usually don't plan on tanking; their WAR sub is usually not because they want to be picked for tank; it's for the HP/stat bonuses. ;)

All that HP on a mnk early in the game is an illusion without the proper deffence to back it up its like having armor made of cotton sacks covered in gasoline while fighting a goblin gambler :P

oh god, that is a great quote, can i use it, please? prety please?

Yeah, while levelling MNK in the Dunes to be full for subbing with WAR, I got into like at least 20 parties, and they ALL wanted me to tank. No... they expected me to tank. There was one group in which I was the puller, tank, and major dd (I asked them if they wanted me to heal as well... argh), but there was one group that pulled it off (I believe it was MNK/WAR, DRK/THF, BRD/WHM, WHM, THF/WAR, and BLM). We actually rocketed through an entire level in less than 40 minutes. But in the other 19 parties I was with (which took 3 days, 2 nights real life time... not all strung together, of course) I died every 20 minutes, we had horrible downtime when we did kill something, and I made absolutely no progress whatsoever. Seriously in 3 days and 3 nights of pting I only got from 11 - 15. Seriously, MNKs are not tanks, I'm just glad I'm not gonna be playin MNK again, because that shizzy is just ridiculous.

I'm currently playing 23Mnk/11War and the sad truth is at my lvl I usually have the highest defense in most groups I get in because of under equipped members. Thank god most groups still don't ask me to be the tank but I am usually 2nd provoker if things go awry.

Spudster! Good to have you aboard buddy. Welcome to the site.

When I partied with my monk in Dunes, I found myself forced to be the tank alot, simply because so many of the WARs were so damn slow with the Provokes. I'd try to let them tank for a few battles, but it became apparent that the mages were gonna get murdered if SOMEONE didn't manage to get a voke off quickly. So, anytime I saw the mob move towards the mages I voked instantly.

At level 11, MNK is a very good tank. The difference in def between a WAR or PLD and a MNK is small, and MNK should have higher VIT.

This changes later, but to all those that said a lv11 MNK/WAR shouldnt/cant tank... try it. They are great.

LOL most melee can tank to qufim islands and mnks can still tank at kazham sometimes, hell when i played rdm/war because i didnt know better at that time *blushes* i tanked all they way to Yhoator Jungle lol, and i know a mnk will take the same amount of dmg. Most melee have the same defense at that lvl anyway. Melee jobs dont start to define themselves to lvl 30+ anyway.

File this one under: "Why power-leveling is a bad idea"

The problem with this party (based on the read) was the guy had no armor. Honestly, who runs around with a lvl 1 robe? I doubt the mnk got himself to that lvl -- maybe he was power-leveled. If he raised his job the honest way, he wouldn't have started having problems at lvl 8-9. He's start to lose too many fights to mobs who merely check as "decent" and probably a few "easys" by level 10-11. If your player can't solo a "decent" at that level, then it's time to shopping.

Mnk/War can be used as a backup tank in a pinch as long as they keep their armor updated.

Nothing wrong with a low level monk subbing war tanking ... I took my Monk to lvl 18 (before I unlocked Sam and decided this was a better sub for my Warrior) and I main tanked just fine when needed ...

>< SAM is never a good sub.

Sam is an excellent sub for war and drg ... you really need to check into it more ... there is tons of literature on how GREAT Sam is for Warrior ...

Its not, though. (While I'll admit, /SAM can work on WAR or MNK, subbing it on DRG is just silly, and subbing it in general loses out to the benifits of other subjobs.)

Third Eye and 60 TP every 3 Minutes are not a reason to choose a subjob. (Yes, I understand that Full Break is important, and that getting that 60% TP on command is kind of nice.)

For every job that isnt WAR, subbing WAR *will* build you more TP than subbing SAM. Period. Double Attack *will* build more than 60% TP for you every 3 minutes. Third Eye is useles when you arnt tanking. SAM gives crap for stat bonuses. And Store TP II gives you 1 extra TP per hit. Thats 100% extra TP every 100 hits. >>>>Double Attack trumps all of this, and does damage to boot<<<<<<

As a WAR main, you already have Double Attack, so that arguement is lost. But why not get something that will help you build TP regularly, WHILE you hit, rather than 60% every 3 minutes. /MNK, perhaps? For Focus? (And counter, should you tank). /THF, maybe? Sneak attack with a G.Axe is a no-joke free critical. And SA-Sturmwind is pretty sexy too. /NIN perhaps? Dual Weild II is like having a 8% (about, i think) haste. 8% means something with two 1h Axes, and blink will make you a better tank/backup.

You do your research. You need to choose a sub for its abilities, and nearly every ability is better than 60% TP every 3 minutes. At least MNK/SAM hits often, and might benifit from the 1 extra TP per hit. A WAR hits very slowly, and the effects of Store TP are practically useless.

SAM, truely, is never the best subjob choice.

I'll have meditate soon ... any more comments ... if that's not good enough reason then I don't know what is ...

and as of right now ... when I play warrior with my sam sub I can get off at least 3 ws in one fight ...

Meditate will give you 60% TP, and it resets every 3 minutes. This is an awful reason to sub Samurai. Other subjobs will help you get much more than 60% every 3m, by boosting accuracy (mnk), or speeding up attacks (nin).

Go /SAM. I'm just telling you that /SAM isnt what the Bradey Guide says it is. The DRG/SAM comment was laughable.
