What place, if any, ......

Your total support role in a party goes away. You cant really deal damage, nor can you heal. Worthless for even soloing.

All your nukes would get resisted terribly. Same reason you never see whm/blm acting as a DD with elemental magic. Thus smn/blm loses all its /whm utility spells and gains nothing useful in return.

you do get more MP and nuking spells.. and a SMN is more than support.. their summons can do more damage than a BLM's spells x.x

Only with the top lvl blood pacts and they are less reliable. The mp difference between blm and whm sub is very minor.

SMNs are healers, they do not want to be healers generaly, they will go kicking and screaming but they are healers none the less, Subbing BLM gives you acces to a very limited number of spells that will be mostly inefective.

Last I read it is unknown what affects blood pact damage beyond player lvl. Many hypothesize it is based on summoning skill, but that is commonly contested. I don't believe anyone has linked a stat to it, at least not that I've read. Further more the stat difference between blm and whm in int will be about 4-5 at best, which if it functions anything like blm int, will result in 6-7 extra dmg.

Svina could probably give better confirmation on all this.

SMN/BLM is great for fishing in Qufim when you have Carby Mitts and a Light Staff to handle the fished up mobs and just want to be able to Warp back to your HP.

Otherwise, awful. Stay away.

Nin/blm is affected because blm gives magic attack+ trait which affects nin's elemental magic attacks. However, summons aren't really attack magic, so that is where the question arises. Most smn's on ffxionline.com state the blood pacts damage is based on the summon, summoner's lvl, and maybe summoning skill. I don't remember ever seeing a smn comment about +magic attack items (like the earring) having any effect on their attacks. Even if it did, the effect is small.

No stats have any effect on avatar performance. Or if they do ...ehh its very very insignificant.

Farming Skinks at 55, Carby hits 80-105 (120 criticals, damn cap), I hit 56, farm Skinks, Carby hits 92-117 (120 criticals, damn cap).

Dunno what it's based on really..

interesting. i was afriad this would turn in to a hot blooded argument. im glad it didnt.

main reason im asking is this. i've developed an interest in the the job and i'm working my way to Fenrir (2 whispers left). but i have never touched my WHM, not once. and i have soloed my SMN to 15 subbing blm (when the few times i went with friends i subbed red if there was no other healers) and i found no real problems. i know the general consensuss on smn's is they are looked to as main healers most of the time. im just wondering if i'll have to bite the bullet and do something i never planned to do ever. lvl my whm just to sub it for my smn.

Yeah, you will need to lvl whm, but it really should be rather easy for you. Taking whm to 1-37 works practically identical to rdm 1-37 since neither has any unique spells yet. Smn/blm just won't cut it. Smn/rdm = Smn/whm - all curagas and -na spells. Plus, no job gets parties easier in valkurm and qufim than whm.

WHM 1-37 is far easier than RDM x.x RDM 1-41 really isn't a face-paced since we don't do a lot of damage melee-wise.. no real magic damage... our MP is a lot less than WHM and BLM x.x RDM are a lot more useful at 32 with dispel. 40 with convert. 41 with Refresh.
