now that im am closing in level 75 as PLD (im currently level 74) i have begun to wonder... what should i merit when i hit level 75? i have been thinking maybe VIT but some ppl are telling me that may not be a good idea... so then i thought DEF... but then again my def with all my buffs and shit is like 800 something any ways... so i come here to ask.. what should i merit i thank u in advance for ur advice ^-^

Well, first off you can't merit Def.

With the shield mastery update, Shield wouldn't be a bad idea to merit, but for the most part the first thing you should probably merit is either HP or Sword. I'm not a paladin myself but as far as job specific merits go, Shield Bash recast looks pretty nice, as does Cover effect length.

Just to reiterate, I'm not actually a paladin myself, so I could be a little off.

i can not see sword being one to lvl first. most cases pld is using earth staff in fights that matter anyway. same reason i would not think shield either hp and maybe a slight mp would be my choice

Well, staff merits aren't going to help a PLD in Sky anyway.

Has anyone parsed shield proc rates vs. damage reduced after Shield Mastery yet? Earth Staves might not be the best thing anymore for PLD vs. some HNMs.

Sword and shield merits will help with anything that doesn't require an earth staff, especially in merit parties (in lufaise meadows, for example).

Any Paladin using Earth Staff in EXP PT's now, as well as several HNMs now, is just a retard. Shielding has been improved so much to where Earth Staff has been pretty much labeled useless. As well, Shield Mastery allows for a good chunk of TP growth. If you happen to have club leveled, using it for MP Return, stacked with Auto Refresh, reduces downtime significantly. I honestly cannot imagine how bad ass Aegis has become with the shield changes and Shield Mastery trait. It was already blocking at incredible rates with incredible damage reduction beforehand.

From an observers viewpoint: HP, Sword/Shield, VIT, and hate-grabbing ability recasts, such as Rampart. These are your priority for merits.

if you are Elvaan I'd say merit MP merits. Meritting MP and then with the MP -> HP gear you can get will be able to get a good amount of HP. Maybe a few into MP and a few into HP. Perhaps Galka completely MP. If taru HP, if Hume prolly just HP. If Mithra maybe just HP. That's my best idea right now. Haven't done much thinking about it though.

im not saying dont lvl sword/shield im saying that I would not say first to merit hp/mp enm+ I would think be more important

PLD.... merit party..... PLD i do not see where a PLd fits into a merit party :P
but i would go with shield and go with 5 MPs not HPs as if you lv a mage job you got more MP and if you lv a non magic job use a cassie earring and got 50 more hp and 1 str 1 vit

Do anything but what he just said.

Just merit HP/shield/vit/agi/sword.. Even if you plan on getting cassie earring. MP doesn't really mean much end game.

QFT.

Arylias and Skaw know what they are doing and talking about, I would take advice from them. HP/Shield/Vit/Agl/Sword skills are all very wisely merited from a good paladin. And believe it or not, good Paladins merit often.

How the fuck would you know? You never made it past 70 because of Maat.

Get off the bandwaggon of people thinking NIN>PLD in endgame. What you chose is situational, I personally would pick a PLD over a NIN in most scenarios.

I may only be a lvl52, but I have yet to meet a NIN who can hold hate after a MB of freeze.

it does if you are a galka or elvaan and can barely get a flash and Cure IV off :| with all the MP -> HP gear or atleast the HP+ MP- gear they'll have so little MP they won't hold hate as well

You're a dumbass. You can get merits in regular parties. "merit" isn't a term to describe a type of EXP PT.

Meh, that's true :p

Yeah normal exp parties but once you hit 74 every one is /nin and then want more EXP/HR so PLDs have a hard time then

Blazn,

Even at 75 you get normal EXP parties. And, at 75 PLD/NIN is nothing to scoff at damage wise.

I've meritted HP, mob crit hit down, JA recast timers (rampart, shield bash, and sentinel), and other things for other jobs (like archery and crit hit up for my rng...anyway) i haven't had time to merit any job much in the past few months and once i get around to it i'm gonna merit shield because, as skaw said, the new shield stuff is awesome. Personally i think sword merits are kind of a waste, end game you're gonna be wiffing alot even with merits, in XP your damage will most likely remain low to where it doesn't really make a noticable difference. if you are going to merit sword it should be the last thing you do. Also, unless the only other job you are planning on leveling in this game is nin, don't merit enmity.
:2cents:

If you don't plan on leveling any job besides pld

HP > Shield > Enmity > Crit hits down > Sword > VIT > Cover Recast > other stuff

Don't merit MP unless you're galka or a gimp.

What I'm doing is

HP > Enmity > Crit hits up > Shield > Whatever, STR maybe

Because I'm leveling nin. I probably won't merit much more until nin hits 75 though.

VIT is almost useless and shield is the ownage if it's capped (@ 2 TO CAP I HATE SKILLING GRR)

i'd go something similar to this route, myself.
