What was your "Gateway" Anime?

Toonami's anime schedule in like, 1999-2000

DBZ, Sailor Moon, uhh.. Gundam Wing

Cowboy Bebop! ^_^

I still listen to the music.

I guess I saw some anime before that, like Pokemon, but I didn't become a fan until Bebop. (so I've been obsessed for about 4 years now)

Probably DBZ and Pokemon, but at the time i thought they were just cartoons on CN, i didnt know they were "anime". So i'd say my first REAL anime i watched (subbed, so good stuff) was Love Hina. I was looking through winamp streams and clicked on it on one night i was like "wtf is this" and it happened to be playing the ending, then i played the opening which i thought was catchy and i ended up watching the whole series in like the next day or so lol. Then i went to the forums of the stream, desync, and ended up getting into anime for awhile.

DBZ introduced me to it but my true Gateway that got me into subtitled anime (which is pretty much all I watch now) was kenshin. Friend of mine was into it and showed it to me cause he wanted me to get into it with him. I was hooked after watching it and all spiraled from there.

Rurouni Kenshin was my first favorite anime :p

Sailormoon /sigh

Vampire Hunter D / Twilight of the Cockroaches.
Was like, 7...

Starblazers. (aka Space Battleship Yamato)

I R OLD.

I never considered Robotech anime when I was watching it, so I'd have to say it was Ranma 1/2. We don't count G-Force: Battle of the Planets as anime either, right?

Yes, I'm that old. I have G-Force comic books. Funny thing is, I've never had the urge to go check out Gatchaman, since I know it could only spoil the sterling memories I've had since childhood.

Heh, looked it up... 1979-1980

Pokemon got me into Inu Yasha, which I watched regularly. Then my prof at my college made us watch Ghost in the Shell and I never watched any anime (by myself) ever again.

Voltron when I was a kid...I watched that and thundercats =P

Candidate for Goddess

and omg its been sucking up my money ever since.

DBZ in Toonami when i was like 14-15, althouh me and my friends didnt know that it was anime at the time. My first "real" anime was Chobits, which I bought in Paris, and its still my favorite series ever

Saw Dragonball/DBZ on TV, Sailor Moon and such.

I think my first experience with anime that piqued my interest was Akira airing on Sci-Fi channel back early 90's.

After Akira, I saw anime around for Fatal Fury, eventually Vampire Hunter D, and I'd pick up a new one here and there to check out when I was bored...

I eventually caught wind of Neon Genesis Evangelion and this is where I got sucked in.

Fuck that was a mindjob for a youngin' like me.

I still have the 13 VHS tapes and most of my DVD's (a missing one or two with a friend.)

After NGE, I was hooked.

Occasional G-Gundam and Gundam Wing on Cartoon Network got me hooked...

I was originally going to name my FFXI character after Kira, Athrun or something from Gundam Seed, but I was San d'Orian and wanted a frenchy name to fit the theme.

I'm a nutjob like the guy anyway, so I suppose the name fits and fits well.

Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Serial Experiments Lain... Bah, I have to list my small collection sometime on the other thread.

To answer the initial question, I'd say Akira grabbed my interest in anime in general and Neon Genesis Evangelion just slingshot me headfirst into the world of anime and I couldn't stop buying until a year or so ago. >_>;
