Two days ago I got the question "What would you do if you won a million dollar?". Now, I've got that question several times before, but this time was rather different. I've usually had no problems thinking of things I would do if I won 1 million dollars.

The only things I could think of that I would do, is put 100k-200k in to a savings account for when I'm 65 and retire. Kind of a future investment so that I can live a happy life when I'm old. However, I can't for the life of me think of something I would do with the remaining money. Because, quite honestly, I'm happy with the life I live. I also can't think of a lot of things I would buy with the money. Sure, I could buy a fancy car etc. But are those things I really want and/or need? Thus, I came to the conclusion that I would probably donate it to charity. The reason being charity could put the money to much better use then I ever could. They could do something to change the future for the better, which I alone would have a much harder time doing.

Spending the money to buy things would provide oneself with a large temporary boost of happiness, that would most likely wear off once the money is gone. At this point, the way I see it, one of two things can happen.

1) You go back to your normal life that you lived before, with the exception of a few extra things.
2) You become less happy then you were before because the money is gone, and there's still so many things you want.

The way I see it, donating the money to charity, at least for me (although opinion could change when you actually DO win 1 million dollar, but the way I feel right now), would result in a third option, being live my life the way I did before, with a permanent boost in spirits due to possibly having made a small difference in the future for the better. While it could be a very small difference due to the money they make every year, its still a small change. Besides, those remaining 800k could save someone's life if donated to, say, a child health foundation, which not only makes the kid himself/herself happy, but his/her family too. I would sleep much better at night if I donated the money towards, say, someones costly medical bill, then worrying if my new car's going to get stolen overnight.

So my question is, what would you do with one million dollar? Would you take the same route I (possibly) would, or would you spend it on things to provide yourself with happiness?

-Quit my job.
-Sell my shitty condo and pay off my car.
-Buy a small house in a nice neighborhood.
-Open a bar.
-Coast through life w/o a mortgage or car payment.

I'd use my free time to finish writing all of the things I've started and stopped. It would be glorious.

First thing I would do if I won a million dollars? Hire a lawyer. Then put whatever I have left in a high interest bank account, and continue on working my daily grind, since these days a million isn't all *that* much.

That's the thing, 1 million isn't all that much anymore. You can't get very far through life with 1 million. Sure, could repay all your debts etc., but I have none, and my family don't have a lot of debts either, if any. Almost everyone in my family has their own business so we don't have a lot of debts.

I wouldn't quit my job at the newspaper, but I'd probably become a discipline problem.

I'm highly unlikely to donate to a charity, although I could be tempted work with one of the local foundations to create a small scholarship. Most likely I'd just end up buying a small house and saying goodbye to my apartment and otherwise living my life the way I did before... albeit with a few extra toys.

A lot of it would go toward paying for my nieces and nephews to go to college when they come of age, if they so choose.

If had $1,000,0000 cash after taxes, I'd put $900,000 of it in a high yield savings account. Then I'd buy a 2008 Shelby GT500KR and live off the interest.

First and foremost, pay off our debt. Then with what (little amount) is left, open an IRA for ourselves and 529 college plans for the kids. We wouldn't be able to retire right away on 1 mil, but we sure could knock a good 15-20 years off with the head start it would give us. Plus not having to pay the monthly bills on our debts would mean we'd have way more disposable income to play around with in small ways, which is really all anyone could ask for.

Put 100k away from safe keeping. Give 500k to my Cf foundation. And buy all my friends PS3s, 360s, and Wiis. Then maybe buy a small house for myself and stock in a Beef Jerky Company...

Depends on how I got the 1 million.

Assuming I'd inherit it.

I'd put my brother through college,if he grows up the 'right' way, by holding the money in a separate account.

Half of the remaining money would go to my parents, the rest i would use for college and graduate school and the last of it would be invested and/or donated to a charity organization.

If I was actually to hit the lotto and get 1 million, then it'd all go to charity; but I don't play the lotto.

The Michigan Mega Millions was going for $207 last week. I bought a ticket, didn't win of course. But I had plans if I won. (this can count for the $1 million since I wouldn't do much with the rest of the $206 million besides charity and shopping XD )

-Pay off my students loans and the loans of my boyfriend, brothers, and friends
-Pay off my car payment, or just get a new one
-Pay off my parents house
-Buy a house of my own
-Open my own restaurant
-Put anything else in a savings account and save it

Though, with my student loans being upwards of $50k, and I know my eldest brothers is about the same, I don't think there would be much left of that million when I was done with it.

First off, I'd be kind of disappointed since 1mil isn't really that much anymore, especially after taxes. Yes, I'm greedy.

I'd get myself a nice little apartment, buy a new TV, go on a clothes shopping spree, and move to Europe to finish college. Ooh, and a trip to Hawaii. I don't have any debt to pay off and my current car is fine, so I'd just let most of the money sit in the bank for a rainy day.

i'd put 700k away in a savings account

i'd pay for all the remodlings needed for my parents house and probably continue living here (not cause im a loser cause i love my parents and we have a great relationship)

i'd buy a car for myself and my mother (currently we only have 1 vehicle for the 3 of us)

i think i would try to start my own cable subcontracting company like the one i work for

1. Take 1/4th of it and drop it in a high-interest account so I can use the monthly interest.
2. Take another 1/4 and lock it up in low-risk investments or bonds so down the road I've doubled it. (and so I can't spend it)
3. Pay off my parents mortgage.
4. Pay for my brother and sister's university expenses.
5. Get both my grandparents...something.
6. Get myself the state-of-the-art PC and a kickass laptop. (Which will be out of date in a few months, but still)
7. Big flat-screen TV
8. Buy a decent car.
9. Get a pair of sunglasses that don't look retarded that can fit my prescription.
10. Once I land a job in my field, find a nice place to live nearby.
11. Take whatever is left over and place it in the same high-interest account.
12. Life comfortably.

Peter Gibbons: What would you do if you had a million dollars?
Lawrence: I'll tell you what I'd do, man, two chicks at the same time, man.

You suck. Always beating me to the punch.

And you are all boring. Yes, 1million isn't a lot any more, so you are pretty much guaranteed to need to keep working at least something, so I would put half into high interest CODs and then blow the rest on stupid shit. Like blondes.

Oh yeah, I'd also spend 25k on a Vest for CF to help with my lungs. It used to be 50k but they lowered it <_<
