White Mage Subs...

RDM would probably be ideal for farming if you don't have THF leveled up a bit for treasure hunter. With your enhancing skill, Phalanx would block around 28 damage, and En- spells would be decent.

Xean just switched his sub to SMN and he prefers the extra mp and auto-refresh and he still has clear mind which would of been the only job trait he'd had to go without. The conserve MP only happens on occassion so isn't really that noticed... so i'd suggest the /smn.

Heh.... conserve MP procs a hell of a lot more then people give it credit for. I have tested it in about 100 different parties.. the average proc rate on all of them is every 6.3/10 spells.. noticable.. hell yes.. smn 20mp/min isnt no where near as much. Use blm sub, it's better mp, and it can get you out of a tight spot.. say your brd dies in a really bad spot with 3-4 mobs.. and you have no blm because your in a cannon pt... omg tractor saves the day :D..
Blm is overrall the best sub for whm in xp, /smn is best for wyrms and gods and such, god farming /blm is the most beneficial.

Strangely enough I agree completly with Blazeoffury.

OP left out elemental seal + sleep/sleepga. You might downplay their importance because you will usually be partied with another sleeper or two. However, a party can never have enough sleepers.

Autorefresh is about equal performance to conserve mp. Was very pleasing last night when I used my last mp to cast a cure 5 and conserve mp saved 62 mp (nearly half). That would have been 3min+ of autorefresh. So those two traits really cancel each other out in equal benefit (although I personally lean towards conserve mp being stronger). Thus, you should look at what else the subs offer. Smn doesn't offer anything else except AA, while blm gives you sleeps, bind (oh so fun in ballista), escape, tractor, and a convient warp.

Another option you should consider brd sub when you party with a rdm and no brd. Ballad beats autorefresh by a longshot in addition to giving you a free dispel that works with moderately well despite being subbed. Even subbed ballad lasts the full 2 mins and it is the equivalent of giving everyone in the party autorefresh instead of just yourself. Only price is no mp from sub, but max mp isn't too important 51+ as compared to the rate at which you can regain mp.

The big difference between Auto-Refresh and Conserve MP depends on HOW you're spending your MP.

Especially in Dynamis, for example, where most of your MP will be used in large chunks (Cure V spam, for example, against Monks and Warriors), Conserve MP will quite likely outperform Auto-Refresh by an extremely wide margin.

On the other hand, in exp parties, with a lot of blink (more than 2 NIN or /NIN melee), your MP usage might be more sporadic, and you might be able to get away with cheaper spells.

Also, if you're in a roaming exp party (sky or KRT for example), auto-refresh might be useful as it'd be another Refresh added onto the several other forms of it refilling your MP as fast as possible.

No, it doesn't matter how you use it. Conserve mp kicks in a set percent and saves a random percent (1% to 49.5%). Percents do not care if you do it all in 10 mp spells or 150 mp spells. If you aren't casting enough to make much use of conserve mp, you also aren't getting much use out of auto refresh either.

Statistics I have seen show conserve mp cutting mp costs an average of 8-10% over all.
So you can cast 100 spells for 10 mp or 10 spells for 100 mp and conserve mp will save you the exact same amount (ignoring any rounding differences).

Truthfully for a WHM sub I love /BRD. I was in a party with a RDM and a WHM/BRD and they rocked. The mages had 2 refreshes and with the BRD sub the WHM would switch between +ACC and +ATK songs on us. I never really liked BRD at all until this party and I actually started to level my BRD now just for a WHM sub. Mainly I use /BLM because it it just the all around useful sub. /SMN in my eyes sucks unless you are doing very specific things, and those things are barely worth worrying about for EXP parties. Once I get my BRD up though I'm probably going to use that exclusivly to 75. Unless there is a BRD in the party.

I've always used /blm. I do not even have /smn avaliable for the one fact, the only use that I ever see is for AA. And thats it.

QFT.. someone stated earlier about a necessary carby pull... if you're in a spot like that in a party.. then you are either in a bad spot or your pt sucks and cant kill the mobs quick enough.. very very very rarely should whm or smn ever pull.

Heh the blm JT's and conserve MP are much much much more viable in cannon/roaming pts... you have no idea how much MP conserve MP actually saves you. The most it ever did for me was when I tested it in Ule. Range It basically gave me my MP poolx3... So It can be like having triple the MP you already have.

My whm is 65 and I have used /blm and /smn and have tried /brd as well. Escape is a nice thing to have, but I can honestly tell you I have only used it once in an exp party (pre-mpk era) and as a non-pressure situation for convenience (ie: Korroloka Tunnel to insta-Bastok Mines, or Quicksand Caves to Altepa). I find that, especially in exp, as I have usually eaten whm stat boosting foods, a lot of times, sleep casting (and even bind) casting is pretty ineffectual in a lot of cases. Even with ES a lot of times, especially on IT to IT+ mobs, there isn't a chance in hell it's gonna stick...and if it does, it's usually not for long.

Bard sub I found to be a bit ineffective. As with any job that subs brd, you only get one song, and at least at the level I've been partying at, I have enough to do worrying about haste and poisona/paralyna/erase, curing, etc... to be worried about individual extra buffs. Though I party with a rdm who subs brd on occasion, and oh my does it rock.

Maybe it's because I static my whm with a terrific rdm, but I sub smn almost exclusively now. My MP regen between refresh, auto refresh, & the food I eat is sexy as hell and there is virtually zero downtime while we exp, and that's with a PLD tank. I don't know if that will change as I continue to level, but as it stands now, I've never been sorry I leveld smn, and I prefer it as a whm sub. I agree with a lot of these folks though that it's not a bad idea to have both and try both out to see for yourself. Hope this helps some.
