Why are avatars so weak?

Ok, my question is why is avatar melee so weak? And is there anyway to boost it up? I can have Ramuh hit a beach pugil for about 15 points at lv20 SMN. Also how come my tier II spells are so weak? The BLM in my pt's always hit a fire for like 60 dmg and i use Fire II and do 30 dmg if im lucky. If anyone can plz tell me if there's anyway i can boost my avatars abilities (pre-AF) it would be much apreciated.

p.s. All my other BP's do awsome dmg so im not saying smn is weak.
 
Avatar melee will always hit for moderate damage. Your tier II spells use TP, check your avatar's TP by using <pettp> It'll do slightly more damage the more TP you have. You can also try Magic Bursting instead of straight-up casting the spells.

Your avatars' spells will never equal that of a BLM as long as he doesn't suck. You can come pretty close, but never quite as much as a BLM. Also, you shouldn't let your avatar melee unless you are actually planning on building up its TP and if your party is ok with it. I used to let my avatar get a few swings in before I actually used a magic BP so he could get a bit of TP.

SMN's were nerfed long ago -- or should i say "adjusted" lol

they are very powerful at lvl70 with the bloodpacts though, ive done up to 1700dmg with garuda...
 
lol everyone is in love with her "predator claws" BP. so much that i have never seen anyone use anything else, with the exception of shiva's rush. and probably wont till i get my own SMN to 70. >.<
 
it all has to do with char balancing they cant do as much dmg as blm because what be the point of having a blm. smn are still very powerful though even though most the time they are stuck being healer instead of using there full potencel dding
 
This will help you on your outlook of SMN..
Compare MP costs to damage, not spell names. Or you'll be grossly disappointed when you see the Avatar's -IV spells.
As for avatars meleeing and such, I dunno. They seem to be like crappy BST pets vs anything above EP..
 
Mountain Buster is great on bones and pots, and Flaming Crush is fun when you're soloing Hpmedes in Sea.
