You know, not every person that plays this game is on high speed access. For those, like myself, that have no options besides Satellite or Dial-up, these updates SUCK! Being able to pre~load them over night would be so incredibly awesome.

However, it isn't only the dial-up users that get shafted by everyone updating at the same time! Server congestion is so f*ing annoying, it isn't worth updating until 24 hours after the maintenance

SE is doing a lot of great things recently, I wish they would become more customer friendly in regards to the product itself -_-

This is Square-Enix you're talking about here. This is the same company that does not listen to its customer base, nor does it care. Their IT admins and GMs have shown time and time again that are completely out of touch with the playing community and totally incompetent. They are an extremely arrogant company and see any kind of suggestion to be ridiculous and think as if they do everything right.

its funny though that they say maintenence will take x amount of hours but then it turns into an all day thing because of the network congestion. Lack of foresight and courtesy on their part, and i agree with Valandil they really dont care about the players. This "network congestion" has been a constant problem for any/all updates that do come out. In turn makes me dread updates when they do come out.

I have already filed 4 official consumer complaints with the Oklahoma Better Business Bureau against SE. Not that it will do anything of course, but it DOES go into their official record. You know it also makes me wonder...I wonder if the players who are playing in Japan have this "network congestion" problem. Something tells me they don't...

Preaching to the choir rofl.

The only reason we are getting all these cool new changes is because, GASP, WoW is stealing FFXI members....

You might ask... "HOW????"
simple answer: "Blizzard knows who pays to play there game -_-"

Still, whether it is out of concern for the customer, or concern of there own network stability(which leaves much to be desired), pre-release is a good idea that would benefit everyone... Just a point I figured I would share, as it is really annoying that I can't even get the update data file DL'd

Don't feel to shafted dude Im on Cable Internet w/ and awsome connection and even I got fucked ove with this congestion shit.

THough my ideas on what they should are different. I believe since they know an ass load of poeple play this game they should up the number of viable sources that we are able to download from.

This would help eliminate "Congestion". Think of it like Highways & Back Streets, Highway - Mainstream download then when more people begin to download, open up detours to the "Download Back Streets" so the Highway doesn't get backed up.

Heh, I'm on a T1-speed network at my college, and I still can't get this download shit to work.

They would get lost on the first pipeline ~ thus the congestion message, how do you expect back roads and access pipes O_O...

Stupid SE

As far as congestion in Japan, I would tend to agree. I very seriously doubt if they do -_-; Then again, our servers are in California ~ they have dedicated servers in Japan, on fiber networks.

The odd thing about this is that SE (or squaresoft before the merger, at least( actually has a good reputation of listening to it's customers about it's normal RPG's. It seems to just be with XI that they've dropped the ball on listening to people. Or it might be from the thousands of different viewpoints and complaints that I'm sure they get every day.

Also, you were able to download the update before the maintainence was over. I started mine before anyone could get on, but it just took a while. Also, WoW's method of updating sucks even worse than XI's does.

WTF is dialup?

people on a 56k modem shouldnt be allowed to play the game.

My thoughts are that they should break updates this large up into smaller pieces that don't take so long to download so that they can clear the congestion a lot faster. I'd rather download 5 quick updates than one huge one. smaller faster downloads = less congestion = IT NOT TAKING ME FOURTEEN YEARS TO GET THROUGH TO THE FREAKIN DOWNLOAD!

What I would like to know is why do you have to download the updates, and then still be fucking connected for them to install. I just spent 15 minutes downloading all the .dat files and then as soon as I get to the installation screen I get the network error message. That kind of defeats the purpose of the first download screen doesn't it SE you fucking network morons. I hope you all die horrible deaths!

I have to assume that they're not so dumb as to never think of releasing the updates earlier than they go into effect....Everyone should use the POL request forms and ask that they pre-release the updates next time just to make sure. :? They might really be that clueless.

There really should be no excuse not to pre-release the files. If it's too big for you to hold two copies on your computer, they should at least let the people who have enough space to bow out of the stampede. If even half the people pre-downloaded before the update this would not be an issue.

There is nothing more unfair to this game than unequal access of the paying population to the common game itself. That is absolutely intolerable in an online game.

Actually im from california....actually if im not mistaken im like 45 minutes away from their headquarters (San Francisco?). Really tho guys try not to compare the FFXI server connection to the WoW one. DOnt forget its WoW that is having constant server crashes and mess ups. At least SE does matenence monthly and i /salute them for that. However i agree with everyone else that they dont listen to their players at all. Blizzard i know has done a much better job with that. Id rather have a Blizzard tech helper than a SE one anyday. just my 2 pennies

That picture.... scares me ~ not sure if it is because it is true, or if it is because it is a hobo eating shit.

Panda ~ I don't know if you posted that because I am in your linkshell or not, BUT FFXI was designed for dial-up users to be able to play!

Saying Dial-up users can't use a game designed for them, is kinda being a grown up person chewing on a teething toy(ie.. it doesn't make sense) Sure broadband users have an advantage, and even though I couldn't use it, I would fully support SE, if they would release new POL/FFXI versions for broadband ~ so that those fortunate enough to have it, wouldn't lag out in Jeuno or other populated areas.

All I want from SE is a little practicality. They don't seem to realize, that it takes me about 6 hours to fetch 34 meg's. /_\ Thats right, 6 ungodly long, torturous hours ~.~
If I could download that all at night, it would be so helpful. I don't play at night! I sleep, thus a good time for me to download.

The problem with these updates is the archaic way we all need to essentially connect to very few servers and all download directly from them. If their network engineers had a brain they would deploy a bittorrent solution and get with the times. Bittorrent allows everyone who is downloading to upload at the same time. End result...very little tax on the main servers. Everyone downloading helps to upload to someone else.
