So, after a few weeks of waiting, I finally got FFXI today (my birthday! w00t!). So I installed the HDD, and turn the system on. It starts making a screechy noise, and after a call to customor service, I find out i have to ship the HDD, network adapter, and PS2 over to Sony. Son of a Bitch. The HDD probably got damaged in shipment or something. Sony needs to lern from Nintendo and make more durable products.

Nintendo products are dependable and durable. XBox has the strongest technology. Sony gets the most games, and most of them are great. If all three companies joined forces, videogames would enter a golden age unseen since the prime days of the old NES.

Do the sensible thing, play on PC.

It actually cost me more to buy/play this on PC over PS2.

PS2 HDD+XI = $90
Network Adapter = $30
USB Keyboard = $10
$130 for PS2 XI

XI PC = $40
New GeForce video card = $100
Gamepad = $30
$160 for PC XI

And I still prefer doing most everything on the PS2 - sure, it's lower res but it's generally a much more solid framerate and I get to play on the couch instead of a desk chair.

First things first, is it installed properly? You may have put it in incorrectly, too tight, etc... try taking it apart and putting it back together. If that fails, you may have a bum HDD and sending it to Sony will probably fix it. I wouldn't try anything past that (i.e. opening up the HD or anything) since that'll void the warranty and you'll be even more SOL.

Yeah, just incase I was doing something wrong, I had the tech support lady walk me through it. Ii was talking to a riend and he said the screechy sound meant the hdd crashed, so I guess I'll have to ship out my PS2 for awhile.

Anyone else here have the screechy problem?

Gameplay and Comfort > Graphics.

But what if it lags so bad in jeuno that the gameplay is fucked? That happened on my PS2 and it sucked. PC version runs damn near perfect... and I sit in a comfy chair while playing. I get all 3 =D

Unless you have a modchip or something, I'd just send it into them to avoid messing my PS2 up permanatly

What 'gameplay' happens in Jeuno, exactly? Partying is smoother, going through the game world is smoother. Hell, mobs pop faster on PS2.

I have a nice big comfortable office chair, and a tv next to my computer, good enough for me.

And the sensible reson to play on PC is the fact that my PC, when looked after isn't gonna break down every 12-18 months. PS2s are too unreliable imo.

so, for the record....

Gamecube is a good system, but no FFXI.
PS2 is fun, has FFXI, but is made from shit parts.
then there is X-box who, like always, FINALLY gets the game out more than a year after all the other systems that are gonna support it.

/sigh

too bad GC isn't gonna support FFXI.

Oh well, guess I'll just have to wait till the next zelda game comes out before I dust off an old console.

Don't have much expierience fixing a ps2 but I've heard it uses standard Harddisk technology and you can change that easily. If you have a spare harddisk lying around you might get it working pretty quick, there are some sites about which drives might be compatable and what not. As far as getting the game on the drive itself, not to sure myself.

Screeching noises generally mean the hard disk heads are hitting the platter so you'd want a new harddisk if you hear that. No fix is worthwhile if you hear screeching.

Ive had my ps2 for almost 3 years and ive had n serious probs with it yet. But i did have one instance where i had a serious or what appeared to be serious malfuction with the HDD and it booted me instantly. So i did the check for problems crossing my finger toes and my balls hopin that it wouldnt delete any Ff info

I don't want to start a dumb console war so I'm just going to agree and then add some.

Nintendo products are dependable and durable. XBox has the strongest technology. Sony gets the most games, and most of them are great. If all three companies joined forces, videogames would enter a golden age unseen since the prime days of the old NES.

That would be pretty amazing. An option of 3 controllers...innovenation and classics from nintendo, durability, a very wide range of all game genres done very well so no favoiritism( as how xbox favors shooters for example, and nintendo platforms and adventure style games ).

Best of all, it'd save alot of room and cash.

I was going to play on PS2, but my Hard Drive had been one of those lucky "refurbished" ones. Refurbished meaning it was broken, we sent it back to Sony to fix it, they blew the dust off of it, and sent it right back, fixing absolutely nothing.

I can't even play Playstation1 games on it without having to wait at least 5 minutes for it to load.

And don't think that installing FFXI in another PS2 and then planting that hard drive into my PS2 would work. That would make life way too simple.

Well, I got the PC version, and I've been tryng to upload since last night. I must have done something wrong in some entitie's eyes, because my DSL has decided to become insanely slow in the past week. Also, my wireless conection, which is now way faster than my DSL, disconnects sometimes. (apparently I didn't set my IP, which is 000.000, etc. Can anyone help me with that?)

Anyways, hopefully I'll be on and seeing you guys sometime soon.

I say its a matter of how you take care of you ps2. I've had my PS2 from the first day it came out and i've yet to have a problem with it. I also take my PS2 too work every now and then and blow some compresed air thrue the vents.
