Why do you play?

Because I can't beat it.

I'm a console gamer from old school. I've played maybe 5 computer games ever and only 3 that stand out in my mind as not sucking. FFXI, Earth and Beyond, and KOTOR2.

I've been playing console games for more than 20 years. I rarely run across one that has a goal in it that I can't accomplish. After so long, the games run together and I can't differentiate one from the next. It was like I had played everything. All games the new games were nothing more than what I had already played repackaged and given a new name. I can pick up any console game, play for 30 minutes, and beat your ass.

Now an MMO, noone can pick it up and beat your ass 30 minutes later. With FFXI, your lucky if you have figured out how to run 30 minutes after starting.

I figure I'll play this long enough to where a few generations of console games will go by without my notice, maybe even a new genre will slip in there. Then when I get fed up with this, Consoles might have something to offer me again. If not, I think I may go outside.

Nah, I just troll more.

I just plain ol' enjoy MMOs

I've been in love with the genre since i first cranked up Ultima Online on the old P1 Gateway more than 10 years ago ... i think that thing had like 32MB of ram and maybe a 233mhz (yeah, mhz, oh how time will fly) processor

I said to my friend who got me started "So .. it's like a RPG but you cant .. like .. win?" Yeah right, gimme that" And the rest is history. I was still in high school at the time and this was during summer break .. I think I spent about 5 out of the next 7 days completely glued to the screen. It was bliss. "An RPG with people to talk to as well? Hell, I never have to go outside again"
Played that for a few years, and then while in college my roomate at the time got in as a beta tester for Earth and Beyond. So of course i started playing it too. "Ah" I said to myself "A fresh start with half a clue what i'm doing, hurray!" So Muneca, the Terran Trader of Andromeda was born, and the Radical Dreamers was his home.

Kyp: "So, I read this thing today about a Final Fantasy MMO"
Z: "...."
Kyp: "Are .. are you alright?"
For you see, smoke had started to rise from my head as the thoughts spun wildly in my brain "What would it be like? was this for real? I mean .. like .. Squall or..?" "Ok if i can Omnislash someone that's it.." All sorts of things.
We start playing, it's great, 2 years later here I am.

To me it's many things. It's fun, a hobby, escapism, a 15 dollar a month fashion show, the social interaction that I lack working a 3rd shift job for so many years, allows me the ability to talk to people on the same mental level as myself instead of all the bumpkins I see every night. Most importantly, to me anyways, is the way I feel when I've helped someone with something and feeling that rush of gratitude that comes from them after acomplishing something they've been aiming for. To me, doing anything at all for my friends and linkshell members for any ammount of time is more fun and more valuable to me and them than me spending hours on some mission or quest, but that's just the way I feel. The friendships that I've started in this game, and the one's that have carried over from the previous ones, is the reason I play this game and is one of the most important things in my life.

/bow to everyone
Hope to see you in game

Double post, sorry :/

I play for fun(note the 7 almost 8 jobs 60+ in sig), and chatting with friends. It's boring where I live heh. I miss philly ; ;.

I remember the first time I heard about FFXI. My reaction was "An MMO Final Fantasy? Oh, fuck that!" I'm a longtime fan of the series, but my experience with Everquest had led me to believe MMOs were not for me. The short answer is because Quieren, whom I know in real life, convinced me to give it a try anyway.

As to why I'm still playing, it's because I love Vana'diel. It's still a lot of fun to me, and I've set some goals that I haven't reached yet -- fishing to 100, BST, MNK and WHM to 75, get that damned Ebisu. There's much I haven't tried.

that is almost exactly what ran through my head. i have a friend IRL that plays all the console FF games with me, and one day hes like
"Dude... the next FF is online."
<me> Wtf? shit. like have to pay every month?

But then i started thinking... How is an ATB gauge gunna work online?
Will my limit break/trance/high/w/e u wanna call it still be there?
will i have to freakin mate 200 chocobos to get to the last summon of the game?
Do i seriously have to walk around in circles with random people online trying to get into a random battle?
ect. ect. ect.

Then i finally got it. and i was lost as F*ck. never played an MMO. never played an RPG on a computer. Never looked up info online. I wanted to be a thief why? cuz they make the most money and and get to be all sneaky. And using my great logic i had. Hey, every other game i had Elves were the sneaky ones. Hell in WarcraftIII they freakin turn invisible at night.

Little did i know Elvaan had the worst acc and (pretty much) the worst stats a thf can have :P lolgome.

But back on subject. i play this game for the Fun, definatly. FF is by far my favorite game series. And every time ive beaten a game in the series, i get that mix of happiness and sadness. Happy that i know what happened to characters ive come to love, but sad that its over

I dont get that sad feeling in this game. I control when it will end.

This, is my story..... (lolauron)

Well if your talking about what made us play then i blame Marajade.

"Hey Myrrh watch this video"(the divine might vid with blast my desire)
5 min later

"I hate you Mara, you know i will need to buy this game now"
"I know ^_^"

And so 5 months after credit card issues and video card problems i started.

Marajade picked my Char and died to a mandy in East Sara(blah blah).

lol @ "I love catgirls"

I play because I'm unemployed right now (by choice). Unlimited entertainment for $13 per month plus some electricity, yes please.

Because it's more fun than watching my husband play over his shoulder from the couch. I saw my first /ma "Stone" Forest Hare in Ronfaure and I was hooked.

I played for the atmosphere. Although I did have ideas of getting my character to level 75 someday, I sadly didn't make it. I tried endgame, I tried crafting, but mostly I learned to really enjoy everyone I met on the server. Even the people who annoyed me, I often find myself reflecting back on all the people who made up our little world and laugh. The quirkiness of the mixed up jumble of people, from wanna-be thugs (Yusuke) to overprotective moms (Kateverlasting), from inflated egos (Vang) to kind hearted souls (Alyada), from creative movie directors (Chasym) to people crying out for attention (Colbwa), and from little sisters (Graydaze) to big brothers (Urywury) and even Canadian chicks with big knockers (Sabia)... I'll never forget you punks, you were the actors in my game. And I wouldn't hesitate to call any of you friends if we met in RL.

That's why I played.
