What happens when you give computers to kids who never had computers before? Their ass backwards parents rebel and want to take them away, instead of being responsible and teaching thier children how to use it.

Being poor is not an excuse to be this stupid. Sure is sad to see stupid poor people making things even harder for thier kids than it already is.

Because school isn't used as "one big happy gabfest" without the laptops, right?

If I were a parent and my child was had this sort of option, I'd simply turn off it's inherent LAN/WiFi ability to prevent them from using the internet on it. And if I were in the position to not know how to do so, I'd ask someone at the school.

Yay for backlash against technology. My job is secure for another 20 years.

._.; Well, I do understand why some parents would not want their children to have these computers. There probably is not enough well trainning and expenses to go around for students to fully understand it. Some kids might sit down and try to figure it out for themselves while others know how to use AIM. Computers do not teach kids gaming, kids teach kids gaming.

And middle school students? Uh... that's an accident waiting to happen. Maybe I could see possible high school students but it is still a risk as far as getting the laptops back at the end of the year. It is already bad enough trying to get textbooks back in decent condition.

One the reasons I had a computer when I was middle school was that the teachers would complain about my handwriting (it still is unreabable to most this day) and had so many hang ups about how to format the paper, cursive, etc. Well, they did not like the typed papers because of that either but at least they could read my papers. XD

Yeah, and to think Ranpha, just about the only thing handwritten these days are signatures for verification :P

Soon that will be replaced with electronic fingerprints or retinal scans. =O

Already happening

Look at the douchebag in the back on the right. Fag.

...because the 25 billion he's donated to worldwide charities already is worth nothing?

ok, This is retarded. When I was in High School (not THAT long ago) the computer lab came to us. There was a couple of sets of laptops that belonged to the school and if requested, would be brought to your class for use. At the end of class, they were put back and everyone was happy. Why on earth are they letting these kids take them home?

They're idiots.

In class / Study Hall PCs =

Take home laptops (read: destroy me!) = :nono:

Whatever happened to, "I've got to type my history report for class tomorrow, so I'll be going in early to use the schools computer." or "I'll be staying a little after school to type my paper for English."

Lazy kids

that is just the beginning is what i'm poking at. I believe his will is like 99% of his wealth is going to charities, so it will just be an addition to his extreme caring for the poor.

My dog ate my laptop.

Dont give them the internet! They might stumble upon harcore pr0n sites like...oh say...QCDN.

Ohh i make myself lawl

Well in Japan almost every school age child has a laptop and it works well for them. Unfortunately, we take advantage of the system as most Americans do. Shame we lack the discipline to use better technology for a better learning enviroment

On an OP note, I don't think the article is saying the kids don't use them because they're poor . . . I think it's suggesting that they use them socially because they're kids.

Honestly..it seems as if our education system is moving more of the educational responsibilites to the home. When my children were in elementary school the teacher informed me they would not be teaching math "facts" in school (i.e. 2 = 2 = 4) but that would be the responsibility of the parents and they would teach math "theories" in school... HUH???

When I was going to school we went to class from 8:25(ish) to about 3pm. Monday - Friday...got WAY less days off for "Staff Development" and "Grading Days" (guess what...teachers graded AFTER class!). Now both of my children are in middle school and every other wednesday classes start a couple hours later...AGAIN for staff Development. A friend of mine has a freshman in HS who has two free periods! W T F?

While I believe it is my responsibility as a parent to be involved with my children's education...I have to wonder what exactly is up with our educational system. I spent time every night helping my kids learn how to add, subtract and multiply...even after a full day of my own. I have the skills and knowledge to help my kids with MOST of their homework...(somethings they teach the kids to do completely differently from how I learned and I just go.."uhhh"..lol) But what about the parents that don't have the ability or maybe even just don't give a shit about helping their kids (I still dont' think I should have to spend 1 1/2 hours every evening helping my kids with homework because the teacher spends too little time explaining things). Where is our public education system headed??

Schools don't give a shit because they don't have to give a shit. An effectively executed school voucher system would force schools to try their hardest to keep funding in the school system - and if they failed would allow for the kids to simply go to a private school that could get the job done(note: EFFECTIVELY executed).
