Ive played a few different mmo's in my time and have seen most of them extend there original race selections by adding atleast one new race in every game. New jobs are great and all but dont you ever get sick of looking at the same races? I understand that by adding a new race people are probably not going to create a new character just for the sake of playing that race but what about for those players who play multiple characters. I created a hume for melee and a taru for mage jobs and wonder if they added a job thats stats made a more powerful scholar and dancer? Would you make a new character? That being said here is my question. What race would you want, what would they look like, and what would make them unique. Or if you think "Oh noez! not another race" or "Add female mithra" feel free to drop a line. Just curious.

SE 'balanced' the stats on the 5 current races to the point another race is next to redundant. Race is mostly an aesthetic choice anyway, any race can be reasonably good at any job. Certain races have an advantage, true, but it almost evens out in the end, depending on how you gear yourself and/or utilize your available tools.

Still wondering where the idea for Galka came from anyway... and Tarutaru are the complete opposite of a certain other midget race....

SE's stated they aren't going to do anything that'll make someone have to start all over.

"Add female mithra"
I'm guessing you mean add male mithra. Other games like WoW can put in new races easier. Want to level a different class? You have to make a new character. I'm sure if FFXI did that then they'd be a lot more likely to give us another race but like Skaw said, they wont do anything that requires people to start over again.

Not as long as the ps2 is un-upgradable. As for having people "start over" people start over all the time, and if they add new races it may actually be refreshing to start anew.
I still demand to see some Bunnys in the game.

teppo why did u kidnap kanye west's bear and make him a ninja?

On their own accord, yes.

They aren't starting over because something is released and they need to.

Thats what SE is against, making you start over. Aside from being banned, anyway.

The closest to a new race I could see happening is male mithra, and there'd be sign ups to change your current mithra character to it like World Emmigration. And again, it's simply cosmetic, nothing game altering.

Not trying to derail this or anything, but I hope you were joking about that comment lol. That is actually Jinnosuke/"Kuma" from the series Afro Samurai that aired on spike tv last year.

And as far as a new race, the game just wasnt built for it like WoW was. Plus WoW is PC only anyway which allows them to upgrade thier game in any way they want basically. SE made our races as a balance check system as others mentioned above.

Of course there will be other races (Cait Sith appears in WotG), we just won't be allowed to play any... ; ;

Asides this, I think the game could use some more hair sets. I mean when PSU is actually doing better in a category, you know somethings bad. =P

It's because most people do not want to repeat missions to get further in the game if they've already completed them once before. You'd have to repeat RoZ, CoP and segments of ToA missions to get full access to everything and if you recall, it was pulling hair just to do most of it the first time. I'd be all for starting a new race IF all characters on a single account gained access to sky and sea without having to repeat the missions a second time once any single character completes the mission. It seems like it would be a relatively decent idea to me since the account should be used only by one person and I can't think of any real detriment to the game either.

No, I don't think so. Unlike other MMOs, most FFXI players focus solely on one character and take it through all the way. It really wouldn't work out if they added more races.

Not to mention, most of the story is driven by the 5 races :<

I could see it happening as a desperation move when the game really starts to die, but not anytime in the near future. I wouldn't hold my breath.

SE has said no there will not be because there physically can not be. The PS2 is unable to handle the amount of new material that would be required by an additional race. Don't forget people that you have to make sure the lowest common denominator works right.

"Uh, oops, it wasn't 5 tears from Altana that created the races, it was 7"

>.>

man. screw ps2.

Mishy's just mad that her face/hair set got Rule 34'd. =P

What most people are saying. This game isn't like WoW where you have to create a new character completely to play a new job. It's easy with a system like that to tack on new races and stuff. FFXI is about doing everything with one character, which is the exact same reason that I laughed at all of the "dancer is female only lol!" crap people kept saying for so long. I think Skaw said it above, but S-E will never do anything that will screw over someone who has been loyally playing with their character for 4-5 years.

Even though the game is based around doing things with just one character, it won't kill anyone to have a few new races. That way new players have more choices, more freshness is breathed into the game, and it might even attract more players.

No one is telling you to switch to the new race, and if you feel compelled to that is quite your own problem. As for altana's story, there are -way- more races then 7, that is simply -our- belief. As we explore newer and newer regions, I wouldn't see it as far fetched to find a new race and allow players to play them. The game has been out for five years, after all.

On the other side of the coin, I can see the difficulty behind it. Still, I'd buy an expansion pack designed to deal with the lower levels and lack of single-small group content. Amazing alternatives to dunes and such, a new race, a new country maybe even, and a wider array of lowbie zones would be -very- welcome. ToAU did it with higher levels, after all.
