Microsoft's Anti-Spyware Beta isnt too terrible at removing spyware, and I've seen it pick up and remove some stuff that AdAware and Spybot didnt get.

That being said, it is in a beta, but I havent had it/seen it do anything negative yet.

Also its a pretty good UI, probably bc they didnt make it themselves.

You need to stop jumping on the anti-Microsoft bandwagon. It only makes you look like an internet fool.

I never liked Symantec or thier habit of bogging down your computer or grouping all malware together into one big group to confuse end-users and make anti-virus programs more "required". They spread FUD like the madmen that they are, and I consider them the "Hewitt Packard" of the Security Community. :P

In other words end users are thier enemy.

Actually HP isn't so bad anymore. :?

I think I know what you mean, and I agree, they are trying to make there product do too many things. I personally no longer recommend there consumer virus scanner, but the information I posted is still valid.

I still use Nortons corpate virus scanner though, as it currently isn’t all junked down yet. McAfee has gotten the same way recently and every time you turn around they are trying to sell you something.

The point of my post was speaking to an end user perspective. After reading though the threads, it gave the impression that a firewall alone is enough to stop a virus. End Users never see things as they “LET” the virus in. If they leave a port open and a worm walks in, they still don’t see it as they “LET” the virus in.

Ok.... I never look at things this way. Even though this outlook on things maybe "user friendly", in my view its decietful, you arent preparing them for the future and telling them the WHOLE truth (the one that will help them anyway).

What your doing is your telling the people that your talking to "nice" things and blowing sweet smelling flowers in their ears. I know for a fact that this "works" but it only works because it makes your life easier to explain it to the end-user. This is not my "style", even though I do use it at times.

This to me is like telling your mother when she knows she's parking in a "bad nieghborhood" full of thieves and left her car door open with a front seat full of DVD's that "its the thieves fault that your car got ripped into".

The earlier part of this thread gave the mistaken impression that a firewall is enough to stop viruses, which is incorrect. The same is true of a virus scanner and an end user should never be given the impress that a virus scanner can stop all viruses. End users must understand that Firewalls, Virus scanners, Ad aware removers, safe computer practices are all parts of protecting your self, but nothing is full proof. They need to understand exactly how each part helps protect them, and what risk they are taking. I’m not sure were you are getting the impression I am sugar coating anything.

So when you download, each Anti-(w/e) software, you hve a risk of getting even more problems, only to get rid f your current one? IF this is so, wouldnt it be more efficient to just uninstall everything?

I'm not fully sure what you are asking.

You do not want to uninstall legitimate anti-anything software. The way you determine if it is legitimate, is by researching it, talk to IT people, do a Google search and see what experiences other people have had with it. Read everything you can about it, prior to installing it.

Let other people pay for making a mistake, rather than your self.

Just do what he said before Davio. Keep windows update on. SP2, popup blocker and antispam blocker.

As far as firewall goes, use hardware router/nat or IMO windows firewall.

U will still get some spywear/viuses/worms but will be far less.

It's almost impossible to stop them all if you go to sites with spywear on them. But you can make it rare.

As it was written spybot is a good tool if you can learn to use it.

Listen to Pascal he knows what he's talking about and can explain it in normal speak unlike geeks like me who have alot to learn. :P

And you need to stop and think about what you just said. (or typed)

I just recommended a Microsoft product. However, they recently acquired Giant, and since Giant made this program for the most part, well, iits true.

And since you love the MS firewall so much, go post about your relationship with it on slashdot or anandtechs forums. I'm sure they'd love to hear about it.

Alrighty, but i cant dl, and install the SP2 packet because my windows is a cracked version. ( . _ . )

I will continue to use the Spybot, and Ad-ware.

What version of Windows was installed on your system prior to reformatting?

You'll prob get as much misinformation as you get information from those forums as you get here Asplode. They way you post only proves this. You constantly put Microsoft down, a company that has ALLOWED people like you to learn about computers, a company that caters to the inexpierienced user, and a company that brings everyone together on one platform which has made it easier for anybody to use a computer.

Because we all know you wouldn't be here if not for microsoft. You go try tell somebody to learn computer on a linux machine, only people I know like that are like Pascal here.

Tandy DOS on a TRS-80 was my first. I didn't work with Linux until my 486SX25.

Ok this is my honest answer. IF there is a way to keep that version malware free, I do not know it. My advice? Use Firefox as Asplode has said, (but some sites will not work with it, and there may/maynot be issue with that, that will be hard for you to fix) or MYIE2. http://www.myie2.com/html_en/home.htm

The good thing about MYIE2 is that it IS IE, you have tabbed browsing, you can turn off ACTIVE X and JaVA and all the other spywear crap with the click of one button, and then turn it back on again.

Use spybot and make sure tea timer and SD helper are turned "on". I used to use spyblaster but everything gets though that now so its a waste of time, but you can try it.

Thats pretty much it, other than not going to sites with bad stuff and SET outlook with preview pane off and auto open off, or just use WEBMAIL.
