Well, i just got my computer reformatted about 4 days ago. The person i gave my conputer to work on didnt install Firewall. So i gave him a call today and he said in the help desk support section of the start menu it tells you step by step instructions on how to format your fireall. Now im not major in computer diagnosis, so after reading links off the section all i could find were patches, like in games and updates. I downloaded McAfee AntiSpyware program and now currnetly using it.

Just today, when i logged on to my PC i get a msg saying, theres programs suspicious or something. So i scanned my PC using the McAfee and found shitloads of weird spyware stuff so i removed them. (Note im using the 30day free trial thing). after i rebooted my PC it came up with the same thing again so i scanned again and rebooted. It seemed fine for 1hr then i got the same msg again. >_>

Now i dont know whats going on, maybe i need to install Windows XP Professional Firewall...

Can anyone help me out?

Don't trust McAfee. Their software sucks, and is considered to be more detrimental than not being protected. I know their anti-virus is practically a virus itself, so I wouldn't doubt that their anti-spyware sucks too.

Spyware doctor is a good program to run if you want to get rid of spyware. Ad-aware is also far better than mcAfee.

my McAffee works fine for me, Baja >.> wait.. aren't you supposed to ba away for the month, baja? O.o

I'm away from XI. I'm going to be moving around in a while, so I just unsubscribed for june since it'd be a waste of money to pay when I wouldn't be playing. I've still got some internet, just not as much time to play. I'm going to be back next month though.

Oh, and as far as McAfee goes, I had a problem with their anti-virus on my computer. Everytime I touched a key on my keyboard, my computer would crash. For some reason, my computer worked fine using instant messanger and in a game. But if I had Word up, Firefox, or just looking at the desktop, it crashed.

that's odd O.o works fine for me on my desktop.. hmmm odd

the firewall wont stop spyware. use firefox as your browser and you wont have to worry about popups. also, a prog called spybot is one of the better adaware removal tools. those are the only things to worry about. me personally, i dont have a firewall. nothing on my pc to worry about them stealling

Firstly dont use Mcafee, Norton or Windows firewalls, all are crap and a waste of time. Your best off getting Zonealarm or something similar

Exactly.

Firewall Software:

Sygate Personal Firewall (Free)

Kerio Personal Firewall (Also Free)

Anti-Virus Software:

AVG (Free, Free automatic updates)

Anti-Vir (Free, Free updates, non-automatic)

Anti Spyware:

SpywareBlaster (especially if you use IE.)

EDIT
HOSTS File (This is awesome and it rocks.)

Theres some various others, you can google search them if you like...

- EWido
- A-Squared
- MicroSoft AntiSpyware (Giant)
- Ad-Aware
- Spybot S&D
- Bazooka (Only a scanner)

Ok thank you everyone, I will try the new links once this Mcafee 30day free trial is over.

The thing i didnt understand with AcAfee Aint-virus was, after i got rid of the spyware, the same crap came back. -_-

That's because it probably didn't do anything but point it out.

Hehe firewalls.......

I get into alot of arguments about firewalls and what they are good for and what you should use and such. There is no clear answer and no clear 1 way to go, so basically every piece of advice you get you should take in to consideration, and no one person will be right for every situation.

That being said I'm gonna point out right off that bat that I HATE software firewalls. They do have thier place but mostly never in the home environment, IMO anyway.

Why.......?

If you are like me and are the type that don't like pop ups everytime some program accesses the internet, then steer FAR clear of software firewalls. I fix FAR MORE problems concerning software firewalls when people install them than I do VIRUSES on the same peoples computers. Simply put they are a pain in the ass to configure and teach someone to use. If you click the wrong thing your internet goes out, if you click the wrong thing, you can't update your firewall or virus scanner ><.

They do have thier uses and that is to MAINLY block outgoing traffic, meaning if your computer has a virus already it will stop it from contacting a third party and such and send information to them. But why worry about that? YOu should worry about removing it, not trying to leave the virus on there and keep working.

Why else do I hate them? A hacker CAN take over a software firewall and use its access to your computer to do all kinds of good stuff to your computer, reformatting it is one thing, spying is another. And this has actually happened in the past too, from a company called blackice.

What do I reccomend? A hardware router/nat firewall. It costs money sure, but its the easiest most reliable and safe firewall you can get and worth every penny.

If you need a software firewall Zonealarm >< and Windows firewall are pretty good alternatives I guess.

BTW: windows xp firewall is already installed.

Right click network places
properties
right click local area connection
properties
Advanced
PUt a check in ICF

OMG did I write all that ><

This was too long so I didnt even start on spywear lol.

omfg... right after i installed the firewall, i got like shit loads of spamm pop ups. ><;;;;;;;;;;;

I decided to uninstall it..

Use windows xp firewall then. No popups at all.

And it is pretty good too, you get full stealth mode. There are some issues you may have with it, but far far far less issues than zonealarm.

I distrust the WinXP internal firewall, thanks to awesome default security by Microsoft. Too many worms/trojans have been able to penetrate it, and too many things let themselves through it.

And it does have popups. All firewalls do.

I just like knowing more about what my computer is doing...

The only reason I even have windows on my PC is FFXi...

Maybe I missed it, but did you say you got all the patches off Windows Update? That is always, always the first thing I do as soon as I rebuild a computer - hell I don't even bother to download all the drivers before I get all the critical updates.

You may have to go back to WU 4 or 5 times to get all the updates (some don't become available until you install their predecessor first), but that has always been the most reliable way for me to stop random popups (non-IE related, popups while staring at your desktop, etc).

You could just keep it unplugged from the internet while you install the drivers..

That way you dont have to look at things in 640x480... hurts my eyes. :x
