Ok, so I did a fresh installation of my Windows XP because I felt it was time after a long time of not doing so. I install every thing, it runs smooth, do some of the updates, and go to install Service Pack 2. It installs and I reboot and when I return to windows, my Taskbar isn't there at all and all my desktop icons have disappeared. I know they still exist in the system because I open the task manager with ctrl shift escape and browse to my desktop folder and they are all there.

I normally wouldn't bother with Service Pack 2, but my Zune software isn't supported without it, so it's either get Service Pack 2 back, or have my Zune not be able to function with my system.

Is there anything I can do?

From Task Manager under the Applications tab, go to "New Task" at the bottom. Type in:

explorer

Your desktop icons and stuff should show up. Reboot a couple times and if it persists, uninstall drivers and startup apps.

Tried it before. I get that stupid error message that asks if it wants me to send the error to Microsoft. Nothing appears.

You got probs then. If it's that fresh, I'd redo Windows and put SP2 in immediately - even before drivers. I don't know if services have a startup order but it sounds like your problem could be in one of those.

You have the redistributable?

I have everything my PC came with. Only problem is most of my hardware has been upgraded, so not much is the same as it was when I first bought it.

Oh, that lol No, but can always get it again. Going to try to repair windows from disk first to see if that works. If not, going for another fresh install like you said and do SP2 right away.

Better question would be why do you have a zune to begin with?

Because it is better than any iPod out there?

Have you tried a simple system restore to pre-sp2 state? Should clear up the problem you are having then you can try an SP2 reinstall.

If you have to reinstall completely, there is a way to create an ISO with SP2 on it so your "fresh" install will be loaded with SP2.

lol Yeah, I made a System Restore point before I installed SP2. I went back to it after it fucked things up, tried it again, and it did the same thing. I ended up reformatting again since I didn't really have anything on it and installed SP2 right away and now everything is fine.

I have a Zune too, but while it is nicer, 9/10 tries has given myself and my friends severe install issues. Once installed they do work beautifully though.

I never actually had a problem with the Zune software itself, just Windows.
