so many dumbass around these days, and this is a first for me.
Zhi, lv67 pld, never pted with him before. we had a brd, rdm, whm, war pt. right after he said he would pt with us, he told me i should try get a monk for 6th if i can. i said ok, didnt give it much thought since there isnt any mnk in our lv range lfg, (lv65-67). while i searching for member, he send me tell again, asking me what's my xp @ and told me there's a lv68 mnk lfg. so i asked him why would he want a mnk, he told me "war and mnk can do good sc". told him war can do good skillchain with lots job, then i invited a lv66 rng i know. now he starts crying in pt there isnt any "good skillchain". i told him sidewinder + rampage is a distoration chain. then he told me he wont pt without a lv3 light chain, i was like um.... then he told me he would like to disband if i can invite another pld. kicked him right after that. he was pretty polite and i guess ppl have the right to refuse to pt, but for some dumb reason like this kind piss me off.

I've ran into this guy at my level (58-61). He was leveling RNG I think.

Wouldn't party unless we had a BLM that could always MB a Distortion skillchain(even if the mob is weak to another element), and left when I got a member that could make Scission to MB Stone on Torama(they're weak to stone).

It is relatively understandable.

The difference between the Skillchain levels is from my understanding as follows:

Can't find the link... SO please correct me if I am wrong.

lvl 1 Skillchain:
25% of Previous Weapon skill's damage is added to next in chain, and 25% of the Final damage in the Chain is added to the burst. While the Skillchain gets a flat bonus of 25% of the Final chain.

Fast Blade(100)>>> Burning Blade(80 + Fast Blade bonus(25)=105)>>> Liquifaction(26)>>> Fire(45+Burst(26)=71)

Level 2 Skillchain:
50% of the Previous Weapon Skill's Damage is added to the next in chain. And 50% of the FInal Damage is added to the Burst. While the Skillchain Bonus is 25% of all Active Skillchains added together.

Sidewinder(800)>>> Dancing Edge(500 + 50% Sidewinder Bonus(400)=900)>> Distortion(325)>>> Freeze(800+Burst(450)=1250)

Level 3 Skillchain:
50%(?) Of the Previous Weaponskill's Damage is Added to the Next in Chain. and 100% of the Final Damage is added to the Burst. While the Skillchain Bounus is 100% of the FInal Weaponskill in the Chain.

Arching Arrow(1,000)>>> Shark Bite(1,000 +50% Arching Arrow Bonus(500)=1,500)>>> Light(1,500)>>> Flare(900+Burst(1,500)=2,400)

THe thing about Light Chains, espesially from a Paladin's Point of View, is that you can burst the Following Spells on it: Fire Spells, Lightning Spells, Wind Spells, and Holy Spells. So if a PLD gets to drop an H-Bomb on the Mob, and really add to his/her Hate pool, as well as do massive damage, all is well.

But even without the spells, you are looking at a 100% increase in Damage.

Level 3 Skillchains are your Friend.

There are also modifiers such as:
Resistance, Using Light on a Tonberry does jack shit. Using Dark on a Bat Does even less.
Spell level, you will not get the full 1,500 damage bonus off of Banish. (I don't know the Modifier's for Spell level sorry...)

So asking to be prepared for a fight is not too out of the ordinary.
As for lower levels requireing a BLM that Bursts, being that he is in a high demand job in most cases, and especially since he is a Ranger, he would like to have Fights go quick. If you are blowing a lot of money on arrows, and you don't have to, AND you are in a job that is in High demand... You can't afford not to wait for a skilled group.

I personally have Partied with Zhi, he is an exceptional player, and doesn't mess around. If you want FAST exp and a powerful player, you should do what he suggests. Just do the math, if a LVL 3 skillchain is 2x more damage, that means you get 2x as much exp in the same amount of time, and use less resources in the end because of all the modifiers.

Sounds like he needs to be leader of a static. And MENTOR

Organization is a good thing, but in a pick-up party, level 2 is gonna have to do if the party make up isn't perfectly manicured to his liking.

hey...that lvl 68 mnk lfg wouldn't happened to be me eh? =D. But yeah, i can survive doing a lvl 2 SC, long as the MB is still good and stuff. ò.ó

Anyone unwilling to perform to the best of their abilities and therefor forces others to lower their impact is an unneccesary component to any party.

If people don't want to do a lvl 3 SC because they have had luck with others and are unwilling to try something different, then they should just grab a crafting skill-up list and spend their time leveling that.

XP, being the abreviation for experience points, should indicate gained experience. Therefor, wouldn't it make sense to want to experience something new from time to time while gathering said points?

Just seems that people hang to some things while leveling like a crutch. If someone has an idea that could possibly benefit everyone, give it a shot, don't just assume they are being uppity for suggesting something to possibly improve performance.

PHraust I'm not sure where you're getting your numbers from but I have seen with the correct element a level 2 chain doing the exact damage of the second weapon skill before. Just playing THF I know it's more than 50% doing viper bite onto a beetle. But usually skillchain damage is nearly half of its potential.
Then the MB bonus is just wrong. At level 66-68 you're not going to get much more than 200 MB bonus at the most. BLM doesn't even get Firaga 3 until 69 so the strongest possible burst is Aeroga 3 which just plainly won't do more than maybe a 200 dmg MB bonus. With level 2 maybe it'll be 150 dmg bonus.
Also consider with WAR what mobs you'll be fighting. with AXES or GAX at that level I'd venture a guess towards flies in Boyahda. Is light a good chain for flies? No. You want Darkness and a casual Blizzard 3 MB. You won't be doing Aga in their unless you want to be dead very fast.

Now even if you are dead set on a level 3 chain.... just to inform you all

Swift Blade >> Full Break = Darkness. Bam. THE LEVEL 3 CHAIN YOU WANT. He gets his damn skilchain and he gets to be in it.

Damn, so stupid. I hate people.

Yea I know also the alternative is Gustav but with no BLM I'm just gonna say there's no way to get good xp there period.
Steelshells you could do a good job if you can manage to chain without BLM too but honestly you'd be much better off for crabs with a RNG than a MNK, not to mention at 68 their xp starts to drop off.
The PT I'd say itself was flawed being WHM RDM and BRD. No downtime but you need some high damage DDs. MNKs are great don't get me wrong, but they can't make up for lack of BLM and a good RNG can.

Sidewinder(800)>>> etc.
Arching Arrow(1,000)>>> etc.

These numbers are reversed. Sidewinder/Slugshot will outdamge Arching Arrow/Heavy Shot! (But Sidewinder/Slugshot is inaccurate and tend miss more often)

Not all light skillchains are good against all mobs. E.g. against Manticores, I use Slug shot >> Dancing edge. Even with a THF in my PT, we opt not to do light skillchain because distortion and Blizzaga III still rule over those Manticores.

So you see, its really not that simple.

First off. Before you guys spit more vinegar n my face and decide to shit on the serfs from your High horse...

Please note, I was doing most of the calculations from memory from a website I saw a long time ago, and can not find the link.

Second this conversation is about Level 3 Skillchians, not just Light. Yes I used light in my arguement, but it was used as an example. If you notice the part about the monsters' resistance to spells, and the spell level modifier?

Man... I know it's hard when somone writes a particularly long post, but please read all of it before you start in.

Villarel thanks for the correction, I thought Arching was more Powerful. None the less the numbers were pulled out of me butt for example purposes.

There is a lot more to this story than what was told, like, Where were they going to fight? What were the mobs' relative weaknesses? Was he suggesting that they do a lvl 3 Skillchain, perhaps Light, because Distortion might not have been the best choice.

I am all for a lower level Skillchain, for example using Scission vs. Distortion on Toramas. It has to do with what is right for the mob. And I think/assume that there was something else here other than just somone being a pompus ass. as you all noted, there is no Black mage, so Bursting is kinda out of the question, but if you use a level 3 skillchain you open up a whole new window of oppretunities.

BJ.... why didnt u send me a tell? You know my monk is always ready for some sweet bardylove.
I have partied with Zhi, he is a good no nonense player, looking for the best way for experience flow. So I am sure that is where he was coming from asking for a level3 sc. Anyways, lets Parteeeee!!

Just a note..
MNK can only do light chain until 71 when they get Asuran fist. =p

And I wasn't calling you stupid, was calling the PLD.

I can never find a Monk at my level ='(
so I never bothered to look it up...

and I'm one of them. (for a different reason)
For my sake and the sake of others that I party with.

What is a lvl1, 2, and 3 skillchain?

I have a Renkai Chart and can read it. I can set up chains
with bursts. I can set up 3-way chains. bam-bam (burst) bam (burst).
However, I've not had the finese to figure out what this means.

My reply may belong in the samurai job forums, but I've noticed
that a skill level 10 won't always chain with one that may be 175.
Is this true.

I don't look like a total SC noob out there but at higher levels, I'll
get weeded out. So I need to know more about this "level" thing.

thanks

Easy, Quick and Dirty answer:

Level 1 Skillchains only have one element associated with them:
-Scission: Earth
-Transfixion: Light
-Reverberation: Water
-Liquifaction: Fire
-Compression: Dark
-Detonation: Wind
-Impaction: Thunder
-Induration: Ice

Level 2 Skillchains have two Elemental Associations:
-Distortion: Ice & Water
-Fragmentation: Thunder & Wind
-Fusion: Light & Fire
-Gravitation: Earth & Darkness

Level 3 Skillchains have 4 Elemental Associations:
-Light: Holy, Wind, Fire, & Lightning
-Darkness: Dark, Water, Earth, & Ice

So level 1 Skillchains, have not only a specific Damage curve, they can ony be burst on by one type of spell.
Level 2 can be burst on by 2 kinds of spells, and the damage curve is usually better.
Level 3 Skillchains can be Burst on by One half of the spells or the other.

For instance:
Nin, Thf, Rng, Blm, Whm, Brd.
Arching Arrow >>> Shark Bite>>>Light
Nin double bursts Katon, Raiton, or Huton
Blm bursts any of the following: Fire X, Firega X, Thunder X, Thundaga X, Areo X, Aeroga X, Tornado, Flare, Or Banish, if WHM subbed.
Whm Can Burst Banish X, Dia X, Diaga, X, Banishga X, Holy, Cure X(Undead),
Brd can Burst Banish and Dia.

And if your thief feels a little frisky, there is a possibility that they can burst on it as well with the Ninjistsu... lol

Darkness is awsome because the BLM can use Drain, and other spells, and from what I heard some Ninjitsu spells can be used too to actually do a lot of damage.... I don't know about this though.

who Fing cares...

that pld is a cry baby and just made all pld's look bad

lmao

j/k

but who cares... as long as you can skillchain and it isn't weak... pt you dumbass...

-_- /fumes

ah ok, it seems that I was already doing a lot of level 2 chains.
I just didn't understand the poplular terminology for it.

Hey, You'll all get old too and a try to remember being young!

thanks for the info.

Zhi's in my linkshell, now I don't know exact formulas and such as to know who's right about what, but I do know this: his progress is amazing, he's leveling like 3 jobs at the same time and it isn't taking him long to level all of them at a rate quicker than I can level a single one. So whatever he's doing, it's definatly working for him, and is understandable if he quit one pt because it wasn't the way he wanted, to each his own.

I was thr rng that joined the pt to see Zhi quit it. Quite frankly i found it rather humerous. We found another pld no problem and always got chain 5 off lizards in den of rancor. Slug Shot dmg totally blows away Heavy Shot dmg and Rampage from a Galka War is brutal. I guess Zhi can do what he wants but he really should be a smarter player.

Daveman...

Bjbreeze is on his second job. He already has a level 75 THF which believe it or not takes quite a bit more effort than a 67 PLD.

So let's not really get into the who's a better and mroe qualified leveler argument. To be honest if you can make 4k / hour and you are having enough fun to do it all day and night you're going to level faster than someone who wants to squeeze 5k/hour. Which leads me to the point...
Spare time defeats skill.

No offense to monks, but this guy definetly intended to level in gustav on some undead. And I'm just telling ya it wasn't going to go very good there with a 67- PT and 1 level 68 monk. 3 support jobs and no BLM. Those things are brutal you gotta kill em fast fast fast. Plenty of options with RNG and you are keeping it at a lower level so you get 25% more exp per kill. Jeez keeping the party from having 1 level higher than the rest of the party can help you get SO SO SO much more exp over a several hour party.
So I'll tell you all the truth about what happened.

This guy had an awesome party that happened to involve a level 3 skillchain. He decided that the fact it was a level 3 skillchain was the reason it was awesome. Therefore all parties without level 3 skillchains are not awesome to him. End of story, no other explanation What he failed to realize that with the specific setup attained he could not achieve an effective party using a level 3 skillchain at that specific level, due to the specific weakesses to weapons of the specific mobs of that level range. In order to achieve exp fast, you must kill monsters fast. This means you need high damage output jobs. That party had 3 pure support instead of the standard two, which meant each of the DDs would have to be exceptionally strong. It all just turns to shit when you look at it, and as Moraine proved, they did fine with level 2 chain.
