Would you blind someone who blinded you with acid?

Eye for an eye may be old testament, but if it works why reinvent the wheel? I mean a murderer cant kill again if they're dead, a rapist cant rape again if they, say have the "twig & berries" removed (from what i've heard they loose the urge to have sex, therefore no threat of rape; again what i've heard i havent done years of research into this topic) and a person who likes to blind people with acid cant toss acid at people who they cant see.

What you have heard is wrong. Although they may not be able to physically rape a victim they still can have the desire to do so. It's a human drive in a part of the brain (Hypothalamus iirc..)

Rape is a more of a violent crime that is about power and control; on the other hand, it's rarely a sex crime where the attacker just wanted to jizz in something.

An eye for an eye IS barbaric. But, the idea that a man is being severely punished for violating a woman in the middle east is a step in the right direction. It's a small step towards equal protection under the law, which is a big step towards equality in general.

I've heard from a few people that "eye for an eye" is barbaric, but I havent heard any alternatives other then the system that is already in place in (for sake of arguement) the States. Considering that the justice system isnt anywhere near perfect does anyone have any serious workable alternatives for this problem?

There's really no "civilized" form of punishment that actually works without being harsh in some way or another. That's kinda the trap that the US penal system has fallen into.

I mean, if people don't feel like they've lost something palpable as a result - yeah, sure, being locked up means being secluded from society, but inmates form their OWN society in the prison - then what are they really avoiding by obeying the law?
